Oliver was never entirely sure why they had things like treadmills and cycling machines, or why people would use those indoors instead of taking out a bike. But back home nobody would be biking in the winter, which seemed like a large proportion of the year, and nobody would want to be out when it rained... He grudgingly admitted there might be a time and place for such exercise machines.

Oliver nodded again. He had read something about that once, going slowly and then fast... Or maybe he was thinking of spaced repetition, solidifying a memory by repeating it after longer and longer intervals of time. The kid had always been the more brainy sort.

"Um..." he muttered as Harland ruffled his hair. "I don't know if I would say, uh, promising..." The Life trainee frowned doubtfully. He had a long way to go even if that were possible. These days he would settle for adequate. But he hopped on the bike anyway.

"There is more resistance than I thought," he said, a note of surprise in his voice as he tested the petals.

Harland hadn't really thought twice about it. He loved having a gym so accessible all the time, and capitalized on the fact all the while. He hadn't owned a bike since he was a kid, and he didn't really like the high impact of jogging anyway. "Well, Oliver, good thing I said it an' didn't leave it to your mouth," Harland said, cheerfully, cycling.

It was relaxing to work out, above all. Harland always felt like he was in control, and nothing bad could happen.

"Is it too much? There's a way t' adjust it if so," Harland said, concerned.

Harland's comment brought a hint of a smile to Oliver's face. It was just something about the way he said it, so bright and sure of himself. Not that the kid entirely believed those words, but it was like... banter. A thing that Oliver never really had but found enjoyable nonetheless.

"No, it's ah... It's good," Oliver replied. "It's not as bad as I thought. Working out." Then he paused, and a slightly exaggerated sense of doom crept into his voice. "It gets worse, doesn't it..."

Harland's head went back as he laughed, his hands on his thighs as he continued to cycle, too, eyes tearing up. "Oliver, luv... actually, ye know, when you're ready to move to harder stuff it won't ever get harder; you'll be buildin' up t' it," he said, smiling reassuringly at Oliver.

"So in a way, I'd say this's the hardest part, luv," he finished, smiling again, as he checked their time on the cycles.

"Oh." The look on Oliver's face was one of doubt and confusion. "Um. I think coming back later might be the hardest part."

He looked over at Harland, who seemed to be enjoying himself. How did all of these hunters have so much energy? Some days Oliver just wanted to curl up under his desk in the life labs and nap during his lunch instead of get up and get food. And then there was the weapons training, the early morning jogging...

"You enjoy exercising, right?"

"I do, yeah, Oliver. It brings out th' best in me," Harland said, with a smile. Harland spent way too much time at his desk, drawing and analyzing and thinking and planning. Getting to go outside and enjoy the air, and getting to work out on the equipment without fear of death, those were really pleasant for him.

Lucky. Oliver thought exercise brought out the worst in him, he was so awfully weak... Already he was becoming too aware of the breath in his lungs, it was a struggle he was familiar with from former failed exertions.

"I don't think I'll... ever be good at this," he said, missing the days when he didn't have to be physically fit.

Harland shot the hunter a sidelong glance, and shook his head, an amused smile on his face. "Stop sayin' that kinda stuff about yerself, Oliver. It's not good for ye an' it does no good to anyone around, mm?" Harland shrugged a shoulder. "Even when it seems harmless, like... maybe exercisin's not somethin ye'll ever enjoy, an' that's alright, but don't spoil th' future with negative conjectures," Harland said, between breaths as he cycled hard.

"For now, though, we've done our time, an' if ye'd like t' take a break, ye made it," Harland said, beaming.
