Thurisaz evaded him again and again. His attempts began to be marked by a creeping frustration that Fiona attempted to dispel with her quiet, sing-song recitations from his memory, but they only went so far.
Uruz was familiar. It came more easily sometimes than others, but never did it seem to fight against his fingers and tug at the corners of his brain as Thurisaz did.

Before his next attempt at the elusive rune he sat quietly and he breathed deeply and counted his inhales and exhales, and he asked Fiona to still her tongue when he dug into the simple silhouette of Uruz. The former proved viable. The latter, a mistake.

He was twice interrupted by the approach of skipping skeletal feet, biting the inside of his lip in frustration, grateful that he was now hiding the things here and there rather than scraping them at his feet in his room (his room) as he had for the first.
His drawing had grown. He had, dispassionately and without fondness, interpreted it for Lurks, lying through his teeth about the tree, the clouds, the jumble of lines that might, if looked at sideways in dim light, have passed for a dog.

She ran through The Walrus and the Carpenter and a couple of sonnets; she seemed especially pleased by Whoso List to Hunt (which he recited to her in a whisper three times as he rocked back and forth in his usual corner, scraping away at his drawing) and occasionally fell back on it without his urging her to change her material.

Sometimes between runes, or when he was interrupted or when he slept (once being held and coddled by Lurks in a way that made his skin crawl, made him weep with frustration and hatred and with the guilt of being in some small way relieved that anything was there for him, even a thing like Lurks), he wondered dimly about Jane's wording: everything you have left.
He hung a crude tire swing from the even-cruder tree, and he thought about Tuesday and what Jane had said, and he ached and shivered and he longed desperately for some sort of closure.

He thought also of how it was that he was to manage the third rune when he had been told: only when she is there. There would be no second chances for it. It was not worth dwelling on, but he could not help it: perhaps this was how he managed to be found out once more. The Original was doing something, busily, busily, with attention. Qarah squatted in the doorway and watched him, as quietly as it could, its flat dark eyes fixed on him with curiosity and an edge of suspicion.

Whatever he was doing, it apparently failed to please him: he spat a frustrated curse and passed his shaking hand over his eyes before he stood, and only then did he become aware of Qarah's presence. With Waits he had still been ensconced in dull shock and he had been in a safe room and he had on some level expected it. Here was different. He froze, went rigid, and although he immediately attempted to relax back into the same cringing posture he always had around Qarah, it was too late.

"Oh,"Qarah said softly. "Are you having trouble? Are you doing something wrong? I think you are doing something you think is wrong. I think maybe you are hiding a thing from us." It gave him a blank, black lizard stare.

He returned it despite his terror of returning it. It was the first time he had looked any of them in the eye, and he held it. "While I am here," he said quietly and tonelessly, "I will not do a single thing I think is wrong."

Qarah set its palms on the floor and scuttled forward, crablike, its robes fluttering with its quick and jagged motion, for once not stopping a few feet away; it slithered to its feet bare inches in front of the Original. "I have heard what you have said," it whispered. Its narrow hands came up to frame his face. Its expression had not changed the entire time it had been watching.

He cringed, he tensed; his fingers tightened on the hilt of the knife but he did not move to use it. "Have you," he said, and that was it.

"I hear what you have not said, Taym," it whispered. It removed one hand from his face. Its fingers dipped into its robes, came out with a handful of iridescent, wriggling beetles. "I think that you should have some company," it said, and flicked the beetles onto him.

It knew his name, but he did not have time to appreciate the fact completely. He twitched, steeling himself; it was obvious that only a supreme effort of will was keeping him stationary instead of sending him broken right back down to the ground, clawing at what was and wasn't there. Instead he simply shook and closed his eyes and shivered. He hated himself for it, but all he could find in himself to do was to whisper: "Please stop."

A slow basilisk blink that he would not see. Seconds ticked past, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Qarah gathered its beetles up, delicately, slowly, one by one, its fingertips tracing slow caresses as it worked. "Do not do that thing that you were doing and hiding," it murmured. "I have many of my Many. If you are a bad, bad toy, the Many will keep you company and watch that you do not. Do not make me do bad, bad things, I do not wish to be in trouble with Her. I would like it better if you and I just talked, if I could bring you nice water so you are not so uncomfortable. I am sure you would like that better too." It stepped away with a long, disappointed sigh. "Do not be a bad, bad toy," it repeated, and walked out of the room without looking back.
