Berath made no move to try to stop Kyoth, she knew that it wouldn't have been him that instigated all of this madness. she snapped instead, the observation aimed at Sanuyeth's rider but the Weyrling green herself and Rensoua included too. might have made the dive or you might have broken something, something like your necks!>

At this point Aorta shot out of the infirmary cavern and straight across the expanse of the Weyrbowl. The gold's not inconsiderable weight hit Rensoua smack in the middle of her chest and the firelizard clung onto the sopping weyrling, letting out a screech of confusion and distress.

When Bereck exited the cavern he stopped, grimacing at a sharp stitch in his side. The lake was a long, long way off; if he ran all that way he wasn't going to be in good shape at the end. Why couldn't everything be swimming? He was good at swimming, if the water was warm, but no everything had to be walking or running and shaff it he was not traipsing all the way over there! Bereck folded his arms across his chest and stayed put.

Jasiline wrinkled her lip and made a face. It wasn't like they would have jumped deliberately onto solid rock. That was stupid. This was water. This dragon was seriously getting her tail in a twist over nothing and it was grating on Jasiline's nerves. Rensoua's cowed manner didn't help either. They hadn't done anything wrong!

"Yeah and I might choke on my dinner tonight! Doesn't mean I ain't gonna eat it! We might die learning to go between! Doesn't mean I'm skipping that lesson! If ya don't do something because of what 'might' happen well you aren't going to be doing anything at all are you? Fardles!" Jasiline huffed, well beyond irritated. The gold streak of distressed firelizard now clinging to Rensoua's chest was just another thing to add to the spoiling of her fun afternoon. Seriously! She was unharmed! Maybe if she had broken something in that dive Jasiline might take their concerns seriously but as was, Berath's insistence that they were endangering themselves only made her more certain that they were not.

Sanuyeth lifted her head nonchalantly and stretched her forelegs forward, careful not to dislodge her rider. Her very limited patience was up. With a flicker of orange in her eyes she stared at Berath. We didn't have a problem till you arrived. We don't need a nanny peering over our shoulders so if you would please leave now, I might be thankful. Kyoth, you and I have not yet had our turns. Think you can out-dive me? Of course she knew she would out-dive him in the end, just as hers could have shown up his had Berath not got in the way, the challenge was merely a rare nicety and a not-so-subtle clue that she was Done with this conversation.

Kyoth paused mid-stride, great blue eyes blinking very, very slowly. say this was a terrible idea…> he said delicately. This was true, but… he also had no desire to be shouted at himself.

Rensoua had just stood up as Aorta hit her, and the girl stumbled and almost fell backwards back into the water. Even her bulk couldn’t always stand up to an unexpected blow like that, but as it was she did manage to keep wading out of the water (one hand covering an ear, the other petting the firelizard absently).

“I wasn’t going to break my neck” she said, finally reaching dry land and rejoining the huddle. “You see that jump? It was sharding perfect, Berath”

…not to mention that her life (their lives) weren’t safe lives. Why shouldn’t they have fun, now and again?
PostPosted: Sat May 10, 2014 7:06 am

It did not appear that Berath was coming to get him but, a few moments later, a slightly older green alighted nearby and stooped to allow him to climb up onto her shoulders. "Pennath, thank you," Bereck murmured. "Careful please." He wasn't especially confident about riding without a harness, especially a dragon whose movements he couldn't intuitively predict. Sensing imminent departure Vena lofted into the air for just long enough to land on Bereck's shoulders. Eyes blazing orange and tail twitching she clung on tightly, fully ready to attack whatever had scared him so badly.

anywhere,> Berath replied to the trio, her nostrils flaring. yet had any problems doesn't mean you weren't about to, no matter how perfect your jump might have been!>

At that point her partner arrived on the scene, carrying her rider on her back. she said privately to Pennath, believe what these hatchlings have been doing!>

As the dragons talked Bereck slid awkwardly to the ground and advanced on his squire, his expression thunderous. Bereck was a man who found himself annoyed as often as not but real anger was a rarity, and fury this potent was seen less often than blue moons. "Rensoua!" he barked, barely controlled rage twanging in his tones. "Explain."

Aorta creeled and dropped to the ground, scurrying over to duck behind on of Berath's feet.

Fine. Go be boring. Sanuyeth sighed. She didn't need the competition to have fun, but she was disappointed in Kyoth for letting the intrusion stop him. What a poor excuse for a dragon.

Jasiline rolled her eyes and gave an exasperated sigh as yet another green arrived, this time with a rider. "And heeeere comes the cavalry. Shaff! This is one of the most dimglowed things I've ever seen. Seriously?! That jump was perfect and no one was in any danger. I'll say it again! If I didn't do something because of what 'might' happen, then I wouldn't even be here in the first place! That's a fardling stupid way of living your life. That's not even living!" Even Rensoua's dragon had ditched her. That was disgusting and Jasiline felt a pang of pity for the other girl. Sure she and Sanuyeth fought, they had a mighty good time of it too! But they always had each other's backs against any opposition.

Rensoua blanched, the girl’s shoulders hunching uncomfortably as if she was trying to make herself look a little smaller - an odd look on the usually confident weyrling. The wrath of her former squire-master was definitely enough to inspire that, and she opened her mouth and then closed it again before finally coming out with “Explain what?”

She glanced sideways at Jasiline, as if trying to communicate JUST STOP TALKING OH FARANTH with her mind.

Kyoth just snorted, with a wave of his tail to dismiss the whole thing. Whatever! He didn’t have to be involved, so he wasn’t going to be - and he wasn’t going to pull his rider out of a situation she’d made with her own stupidity when he’d warned her how stupid it was. Maybe she'd learn something. No, he was going to find a nice sunny spot...

Pennath said, turning to nuzzle her mate.

Berath huffed and lent into the nuzzle, content to let her bondmate take over the dressing down now that he was here. she said to Pennath; she certainly couldn't imagine Ber seeing the point of an activity like that.

"You will watch your tongue Weyrling," Bereck snapped to Jasiline, fixing her with a glare for a moment before turning his attention back onto his squire. "What do you mean explain what? Well, for a start you - both of you - could explain to me why it is that you think you're too good to wait until your first manned flight lesson to get up onto your dragons? They are not old or large enough to carry you safely yet, especially you," Bereck gestured sharply at Jasiline with his cane. "Are you both trying to permanently damage your dragons? Because you're going the right way about it! Your dragons are eight months old. Eight months! First manned flights are undertaken under supervision when they turn ten months. I don't think I even need to bring up your foolish stunts in light of that- and Rensoua, if you are doing this because of another ill advised crush so help me I will-!"

What? He didn't know but his free hand flexed, the impulse to just grab her and shake her for being such a fool was almost overwhelming. All he had received at first from Berath was a jolt of panic, panic that Rensoua - his girl - was going to die because of her own stupidity. Now that he knew the details he- shards! How could such a clever girl be so stupid? Her and her crushes, he'd known they would get her into trouble sooner or later!

These thoughts ran through Bereck's mind in the space of a heartbeat of two for which he stood frozen, face still a picture of fury, hand flexing. The only other movement was Vena up on his shoulders who shifted her footing and hissed at the pair of young riders.

When the moment passed Bereck let out a sharp breath through his nose and gave a staccato shake of his head. "What were you thinking? Did you really think the rules about flight were put there to inconvenience you not to protect you?"

Don't listen to the old wher-fart. You're plenty big enough for me!

Hmm? He's still talking? I didn't even notice.

Jasiline snickered. It was rather unfortunate for Rensoua that Jasiline had not yet perfected human-to-human telepathy, nor was she very good at shutting up when she was being yelled at. In her current temper, defiance and contrariness fueled by the little voice whispering that maybe they were right, she sat up straight on Sanuyeth's back and didn't cringe away from Bereck's accusations. "Sanuyeth wouldn't put me in danger. If she says she can carry me then I trust her completely. She ain't no dainty lady." Jasiline said with pride, her hand stroking the soft hide of the broad shoulders beneath her. Sure Bereck was an older rider but he was discharged. He didn't even fly with the veteran's wing. Why should she sit here and let him chew into her like this? She wasn't even his squire and how Rensoua had the bad luck to not even land an active rider for a squiremaster she had no idea. She at least had scraped fourth wing out of it. There was still a chance for her.

You have two seconds.

"Anyways, we don't intend on sitting and being chastised on our off time. I'm going to go get some dry clothes." Jasiline stayed on Sanuyeth's back as the green weyrling turned her bulky body around to head back toward their weyr.

Rensoua’s lip wobbled for a moment, and then she started to cry, because… well, because Bereck was angry at her, not because she really felt she’d done anything wrong. Kyoth was enormous, and… well, it’d been fun, and they’d gone higher then Jasiline. She didn’t like upsetting her former master, at least not for reasons that were semi-legitimate and not ‘do you really think you’re going out dressed like that’.

She was pretty certain that Jasiline walking away would make everything worse (oh Faranth, let Bereck not go to the Weyrlingmaster), so she did the only thing she thought might ameliorate the situation: gave way to the urge to cry. Manipulative? Sure. Why not.

(Kyoth reminded her that it was her idea and thus her own fault. She pointed out that he’d gone along with it and she hadn’t forced him into everything)
PostPosted: Wed May 14, 2014 12:35 pm

Usually when his squire started crying comforting her and trying to fix whatever had upset her was top priority. Right now though, no, he was not going to be put off just because she was upset at having been called out on being a sharded fool. Right now he had other priorities.

Berath hadn't needed telling, she had already been moving when her bondmate spoke. Wide wings flared she stepped in front of Sanuyeth. she snapped to the other green, either of you. You may think you were in no danger but you are wrong. Either stand and listen right now or I will call Sekimith to deal with you.>

"Yes," Bereck added sharply, raising his voice enough to carry to Jasiline but definitely not shouting. "Perhaps if you have no regard for the opinion of somebody who has been dealing with traumatic injury in dragons for longer than either of you have been alive, you will listen to the same message but coming somebody who has power over you."

Whether the girl came back or not he probably should tell B'tes. He didn't want to upset Rensoua, and Faranth knew he didn't want to get her into trouble that could possibly hurt her chances of getting into one of the high wings even more than he already had by being her squiremaster but he couldn't overlook this. Could he?

Bereck looked back at Rensoua, steeling himself against the urge to relent and just forget the whole affair. Composing his hands on top of his cane he gave a slight shake of his head. "Rensoua," he said softly, "I thought better of you." He had. He knew that she could be foolish, impulsive, arrogant and- well, all of that, but he'd never imagined she would do something on this level.

Jasiline cringed. Stop.

What?

She sighed. Just stop.

Sanuyeth bared her teeth at Berath, but didn't move to force her way past the larger green like she wanted to. Jasiline slid forward off of Sanuyeth's shoulder to stand next to her dragon, one hand protectively on the green's neck. Why did Rensoua have to start crying? She'd not felt guilty at all until the tears started to flow. Now a hollow pit formed in her chest and she felt sick to her stomach.

She still didn't like how Bereck was acting over this whole thing. His anger she could meet and eventually shrug off, but his cold disappointment in Rensoua reminded her too much of her own parents. She hated it.

"Sir." The short reply was forced through pinched lips.
PostPosted: Sat May 17, 2014 2:26 pm

Where it had been simple tears, Rensoua was now actively sobbing in a way that was completely out of control - and Kyoth had halted in his tracks and was now beginning to plod his way back around to the small group. He was, however, beaten to the punch by the very distressed gold firelizard who popped out of (quite literally) nowhere, winding herself around the young rider’s neck with an unhappy creel - though she was almost too big to do so now.

It was mostly that he said he’d thought better of her, because shardit if that wasn’t worse then literally anything else he could have said. Much, much worse then shouting. Shouting she could deal with, but… well, disappointment really stung.

“I - I don’t have a crush on her” she managed to get out after a few seconds, which was… well, probably pretty irrelevant at this point. "P-please don't tell B'tes!"

Seeing Rensoua sobbing over something he had said all but tore his heart out. The other Weyrling had stopped though so maybe... maybe he didn't have to tell anyone.

When his squire started talking again Bereck sighed, his expression softening and his posture shrinking slightly. He hadn't meant to hurt her but... well he couldn't have said nothing. Calling her out had been for her own good. "Alright, hush," he said gently, moving forward to touch her arm lightly for a moment. "Do you understand why I was angry?" this was directed both to Rensoua and to Jasaline. "I've seen this before. Weyrlings flying before their time, trying out stunts, and I've seen them damage themselves too badly to ever serve in an active wing. I don't want that to happen to you Rensoua... or you," he nodded at the green weyrling, whatever her name was. "Everything seems perfectly fine right up until the moment it isn't, dragons at this age are still growing so fast that injuries are far more likely and their inexperience... well it's just a recipe for disaster."

Did he really have to tell B'tes?...

"I will make an accord with the two of you," Bereck continued, voice going serious once again. "If you will promise me not to get up on your dragons again until your first flight lesson, we can keep this between us. Does that sound reasonable?" Frankly he thought he was being damn generous, maybe too generous but... but he'd already hurt Rensoua's chances of entering a high flying wing like she wanted to enough just by being her squiremaster. He couldn't stand to do any worse if he didn't have to.

Maybe he had a point. And maybe Jasiline and Sanuyeth would just wait and go out again when they could be more sure no one would be snooping around. He's going to hold it over us later.

What proof does he have? Sanuyeth stretched her wings wide over Jasiline's head. None of them had any injuries to explain away and if anyone asked why they were wet, well they were just swimming. It wasn't a lie after all. After they dried there would be no evidence whatsoever of their game. The only concern might be the firelizards. Her boy, and the golds belonging to both Rensoua and Bereck might 'accidentally' leak their memories of today.

I will show Kyoth that we can fly higher than them. We were only stopped because of outside influences. She added.

Jasiline let out a loud and exasperated sigh full of teenage angst and contrary anger. She agreed with Sanuyeth, but deep inside she also knew they'd be dodging a big arrow if they could leave B'tes out of this. If Bereck got this upset, she could only imagine the face B'tes would make. Shaff she hated when adults acted 'disappointed'. Why couldn't they just yell like sensible people?

She didn't want to agree to his terms but she also didn't want to get in trouble (for something she still felt wasn't as bad as they were making it out to be). Then there was still Rensoua crying and "Fine."

She would apologise to Jasiline later (because Bereck was her squiremaster), Rensoua decided, sniffing and wiping her nose with a swipe of her forearm. This was definitely a deal she was willing to take, though, if for no other reason then… well, then the worrying idea of what B’tes might do to them. Worse, to her prospect of not ending up in fifth wing.

“‘kay”

Kyoth mused absently.
