America gave Otto a sorrowful look. "I don't think that's a place she'd go, if all she wanted was to be rescued." The dead were always so very, very selfish. She viciously hit two shadows out of her path with a scowl.

"But..." Did she not want to live? Truth be told, it often felt like she'd given up for the two months they'd dated. She hadn't tried to find a solution, Stormy had.

He didn't want to think it, but maybe she went to end things on her own terms.

He didn't want to think it at all.

He cried out and frustration, swinging away a handful of shadowlings and casting them to dust.

Giving Otto a bitter smile, America attempted to use her charge. The result was some minor damage to the tunnel wall and a wave of shadows knocking her down and back to the start again.

One of the attendants picked the girl up and dusted her off with a smile that told her bets had been made. Rolling her eyes, America resummoned Stryker and ran back into the course to catch up to Otto.

Cursing swiftly and loudly, America made herself a path, Stryker creating a gleaming arc sliding through the shadows.

Momentum gaining, the girl started to actually run as she fought.

Once again, she tried to use her charge, and for once the fireball struck true, right into the heart of a large pile of writhing shadows. With a small fist pump, America tried to catch up to Otto.

Smashing the last cluster out of her way, America bent over beside Otto, panting. "Jesus wept, I need to get better at this." She looked at him, eyebrows raised. "You wanna go again? Or maybe get stupid drunk and howl at the ******** moon?" The girl grinned, and it wasn't a happy expression, but there was a certain comradery in it.

Otto panted, giving the girl a sidelong glance.

"Got anything that ain't Southern Comfort? I think I turned myself offa the stuff." It was his favourite poison. But after days of non stop drinking, the taste of peaches was sickening. "Somethin' lighter?"

Otto was thinking maybe a beach thing. Or even a cliff he could throw rocks off from.

Which is how they ended up on a set of cliffs near the beach with a cooler full of Corona and limes. Feet dangling over the side, America cracked open her first bottle, scowling into the sunset as if its beauty was a terrible offense. "******** sucks to get left behind. Not that you, know, you'd want to follow after. But still.." She took a drink. "What a waste."

America didn't bother clarifying what, exactly, the waste was, because she hated thinking about death. She hated thinking about the details of loss and preferred to dismiss the entirety as gone and done and move on. But that didn't keep her from feeling a sort of potential, small for her, just the beginning of a friendship, unthinkably large for Otto, had been forever destroyed.

Otto cracked open his own, drinking the beer down in chugs. It felt better. The burn wasn't as intense. It was cool, light. Perfect. "Kinda sick of getting left behind. Happens too often. Way too damn often." He replied after a long exhale. Everyone left. Everyone left him behind, and went somewhere he couldn't follow. He took another sip, this time much tamer than the first few chugs he'd downed.

He was outside. Not in his room. He was drinking beer and not hard liqueur. It was a change of scenery for him. It felt new.

He leaned back on one hand, kicking his feet against the underside of the cliff. "A real ******** waste."

"I'd liked her too. She was fun," America commented accusingly, as if Nevada had personally wronged her by being kinda awesome. Finishing the bottle, she threw it toward an outcrop of rocks sticking up from the water. Her aim was true and it shattered with a satisfying pop! as she called out, "Dead people are assholes!"

The sound of crashing glass was like angels chimes. Somehow it was the answer. Sitting inside wallowing was making him sick. Maybe this was the answer. Maybe he shouldn't mourn for Nevada anymore. Maybe he ought to be angry. Angry at her, Alex, the world.

Otto finished off the rest of his beer, sending it flying toward the rocks below.

The crashing glass gave him shivers. It truly was satisfying. "Yer right." He growled, uncapping another beer. "They are ********' assholes." If he could live this long, despite his uselessness, then why did they all die? They left him behind. They gave up. Nevada gave up.

It hurt to hate her. Maybe it was a curve he just needed to get over. Hating was just so much easier. It felt so much better. He'd been through a torrent of different emotions over the last few days, and it was all her fault.

"Yeah!" America cheered him on loudly, hoisting another bottle into the air, almost throwing it, and then realizing she wanted to drink it first. Opening it and taking a good pull, she went on, "They don't have to deal after. They just leave a big ******** mess of everything and everyone and don't take any responsibility!"

"They give up too ********' easy. They don't give a s**t about the rest of us!" He joined in, swigging back another chug before chucking the bottle down. "I think, to be damn well fair, that they ********' take half of the pain we go through after they die, and deal with it in Hell for a few hundred years."
