He stared after her, utterly bewildered. Finally, however, Alistaire closed his mouth, pressing his lips together in a thin line. Silently he made his way around the row of chairs and took, not the seat directly next to her, but one over, leaving a sensible gap between them. He crossed one leg over the other, folded his hands together in his lap, and exhaled a short breath.
"So how long must we continue this?" Alistaire asked, not quite the same irritated tone as before, but not exactly warm and fuzzy either.

Molly squeaked as she heard Alistaire’s voice again, this time closer to her, and she clacked together her knitting sticks clumsily in surprise. “U…um…well…a few hours? The shift is from…two to five I believe…um…” She trailed off for a moment, wiggling a bit anxiously. “…I always bring something to do to pass the time…?” She admitted quietly. Now that the other trainee was sitting next to her though, Molly felt obliged to try stirring up more conversation…it’d be rude to ignore him for her knitting, after all! She lowered her things to her lap, and tilted her head to look at the young man next to her. “How…um long have you been awake for?”

Two to five. Three hours to figure out how to get through this shift with someone like this young woman, who seemed terribly naive - and yet at the same time, there was something oddly stubborn about her; the type of person who would latch onto a belief and not let go of it once she had it within her grasp.
He wondered whether or not that would make her easy to use.
"A few weeks," said Alistaire, sounding a little bored. He stared out at the window in front of him. "Or rather, perhaps a few months by now, I've lost track of the time, I must confess. Being here is rather...illuminating, I suppose is the word."
He turned his head to look at her, his expression scrutinizing. "What about you? How long have you been here?"

Molly’s lips parted a bit in awe. Oh wow! Only a few weeks? He really was ne—Oh. She blinked. Oh…a few months? Okay. “I…guess it could feel that way, huh?” Her brows furrowed in thought, and she giggled a bit. “Illuminating…I’m not sure I’d heard that one before…! Me? Um…a little more than two years now…I think you’re right, though…time is easy to lose track of.” She shifted a bit anxiously under his scrutinizing gaze. “Ah…are you doing alright, though? With…everything I mean?” Deus was pretty overwhelming to get used to at first, she remembered that painfully so.

"Two years," Alistaire repeated, absently rubbing his gloved fingers along his jawline. "Two years is a long time, Miss...sorry, I'm not sure I caught your last name. Calling you Miss Molly sounds too much like a nursery rhyme to be taken seriously."
He leaned back in his chair and smiled, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "I've found myself quite at home here, to be honest. And I have a brother on the island, so I suppose that helps the transition a little."

“I suppose it is…!” She then shook her head. “Oh, no, no miss, please! Just Molly is fine!” She never felt worthy enough to be called ‘miss’…goodness. Her eyes widened a bit though, as he spoke about a brother. “ Really!?” She echoed. “That’s so wonderful!” She clasped her hands together. “That must feel nice to have family here! Have you met with him yet?” Molly clearly thought this must be a wonderful thing…

He did not like calling people by their given names for a reason, hence asking Molly for her last name; but he supposed there was no point in asking again, seeing as how it did not seem worth the effort in arguing with her. Alistaire tugged absently at one of the chain-link bracelets circling his wrists and gave Molly a faint smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"We've met, yes," he said evasively. "Though to be quite honest, having...family on the island doesn't necessarily equate to be wonderful, for future reference."lucyal how dare u no rly ur fine bby /holds u

Molly's lips pulled up in a smile as he announced he met his brother...though her smile soon gave way to a confused expression as she stared at him. "...Oh?" Her brows knitted. "How come?"

He debated on answering honestly, decided that lying did nothing but cause more issues, and turned his head a little, giving Molly a vague sort of smile that wasn't quite a smile.
"Let's just say that my brother and I have a...complicated relationship. We don't exactly get along."

All Molly could offer was a rather lame "Oh" and following that answer she fell into an awkward silence, briefly glancing out the glass window. She wondered, for a moment, how she'd feel if she had a family member here, and honestly couldn't put a finger on it, so she let it go. She turned back towards Alistaire, and offered the trainee a small smile. "I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things will maybe work out for you both one day." In that she was sincere, before she gave him a fox eyed smile. "I also hope you'll come to make friends and maybe even new family here!" A pause, and she gasped before she leaned a bit closer to him. "Can we be friends? Only if you want to though, of course!"

Her positivity was simultaneously annoying and strange, especially coming from someone he didn't even know. Alistaire turned to look at her, one eyebrow raised in a gesture startlingly reminiscent of his younger brother.
He opened his mouth to say something - and then promptly shut it again, his expression slightly startled.
"Why?" came out before he could stop it, Alistaire tilting his head to look at Molly curiously. "Why would you want to be friends with me?"

Molly leaned a bit closer, eyes going a bit wide. "Oh! Why? Well...I think you're nice!" Molly was clearly a bad judge of character...or maybe she had secret x-ray powers. Maybe a bit of both. She also just liked to foolishly cling onto the idea that somewhere deep down in everyone, deep, deep, deep down there was a shred of good...so she liked to give that a chance... "Plus I think friends are nice...Everyone needs some friends, I think!" Yes.

There was a long pause while he stared at her.
"What possibly could make you think that I'm nice?" he asked, more bewildered than irritated. "I've given no indication that I care for anything at all but myself."

It was a long and awkward pause, and Molly stared back at man, though her eyes wandered every now and then because of the intensity of the man's stare. She seemed rather relieved when he spoke again, and beamed. Oh! This was an easy question! Molly liked easy questions. "Well...you asked how I was doing and you're asking about me! Plus you're very polite! That's nice to me!" Molly had very, very, very low standards for what equated 'nice'.
