Oliver watched, speechless, as the hunter demonstrated a confident attack with that large wheel weapon. "I-it is..." the kid trailed off, but his expression left little room for doubt as to how impressed he was. "I-it also... talks to you?" He asked, his voice a little quieter, almost as though he were afraid to ask such a silly question. His weapon made an amused rumbling noise, which startled the young trainee. Jökul was usually so silent... Pale eyes glanced down at the tooth strung around his neck, and then in the blink of an eye it was a weapon in his hands. A long axe, it's cold handle shaped almost like vertebrae, with a broad, beak-like blade. It should have been heavier than it was, but Oliver had no trouble holding it up. What he did have trouble with was knowing how to hold it up. He had used weapons like this many times in his videogames over the years, but... he had never held a weapon in his own hands before Jökul.

Before had to lean in a bit closer to hear the question and casually drew back to answer, "Yup, my partner Vanna totes talks to me, keeps me in check and outta trouble." There was a distinct sense of pride in his voice, as if he owed so much to his weapon, because in a lot of ways he did owe the former-Devil Shield a great deal.
When Oliver decided to show his own weapon, Before gave a grin. "Dude, Liver, that's totes a BAMF-looking partner you got there! What's his or her name?" He'd never seen an axe like it, but then again, he was never really a weapons-buff to begin with. Though Oliver looked like he could use some pointers in holding his weapon, the Mist Hunter knew better than to touch another hunter's partner. "Can you find the ah, whatchamacallit, the oh!" he snapped his fingers in recollection, "The center of gravity for your weapon! I mean, try holding them somewhere around there."

Oliver glanced back down at his own axe, sensing the reverence the other hunter had for his own weapon. It was pretty amazing. Not just the fact that he had a tooth around his neck that turned into a weapon and talked in his head, but perhaps more importantly, it had accepted him right from the start. His weak self had been totally accepted by this magical weapon. "Ah, Jökul," he replied, with what could have been the precursor to pride in his voice. For the timid kid it was far from anything definitive, but the low rumble in the back of his mind sounded satisfied. A satisfied avalanche. He shifted his grasp, one hand sliding farther up the handle. It felt right, the organic bumps and grooves that made up the base of the axe were comfortable and natural. He held it out in front of him, and felt the nose begin to tip downward. Gravity demanded movement, all he had to do was figure out how to use it to his advantage.

It may have been just a hint of pride, but Before heard it and he approved of it. To the Mist Hunter, it meant hunter and weapon weren't at each other's mental-throats, or constantly putting one another down in cruel and malicious ways. Or maybe the real teeth and claws hadn't come out yet. Ah well, "Liver, a weapon like that's too cool to use on a regular training dummy! C'mon, Vanna here totes doubles as a shield," he grinned.
Hi eyes tapered into jovial slits, while he jerked a thumb towards the center of the training field. "I don't look like much but I can take a beating and still keep kicking," Before promised. Vanna, on the other hand, felt conflicted about the proposition. On the one hand, her bonded was showing her off, on the other it was an invitation to get himself injured. Turning a critical eye on the trainee, Vanna only hoped Before doesn't hold back too much.

Oliver glanced from Before to the training dummies, and then back to Before, his nerves were starting to get the better of him. He thought perhaps training dummies would be better for starting off. However, this was a hunter. And Oliver didn't believe he had the ability to damage Before, or even say no to the request. He adjusted his hands on the axe handle, and tested the weight of the blade once again. How on earth was he supposed to manage this weapon when it's center of gravity was so skewed? He couldn't bring the weapon up over his head or it would pull him straight over onto his butt. But... The kid swung the axe out to the side, getting enough momentum to carry the swing upwards behind him. Gravity was on his side as he finished the swing and brought the axe down for a mighty chop. Or at least that was what would have happened had he not gotten cold feet at the last second and jerked back. It was different, attacking someone in real life, this was not a videogame! How was he supposed to go through with it? Damage: 1

"Oooh, c'mon, you totes can do better than that," Before pouted at the strike that barely grazed him. He planted Vanna on the ground, balanced on her spikes but still keeping a hold on the large wheel, "We got these things called FEAR shields. Our partner protects us, promise! Or they're supposed to, iunno if they're also supposed to be our cheerleaders because I know some other Hunters got super bitchy ones." He motioned for Oliver to make another strike at him, all the while smiling encouragingly. "Just trust your weapon."

The hunter's encouragements were soothing to Oliver's tensely wound nerves. "Shields?" He asked, glancing down at his weapon. With all the fantastic things he had seen so far from his weapon, it wasn't much of a step to believe Jökul could be a shield too. That sentience gave him so much, but the kid still wasn't sure why. What made him so special that a weapon would choose him? < > came the rumbling reply, so suddenly it made Oliver jump. <>
Oliver nodded, still feeling rather awkward about having that voice in his head. He tried it again, using the momentum of the backwards swing to bring the axe up and over his head... But this time he put his strength into bringing it down, rather than diverting it's strike.

Before gritted his teeth as he withstood the blow from the trainee. "See?" he gestured to where the large weapon had struck cleanly, there were no signs of damage, though there may have been a flicker of light as the charge was made.
"Okay, how many was that? Two? Hit me one more time, 'cuz you get a prize when you reach three." Before grinned.
Are you sure what you're doing is wise, Silly Before? Vanna asked, not liking how he wasn't trying to make use of her. She didn't want to simply be a demonstration.

Oliver's pale eyes were wide in a very typical amazed expression. There really was no mark, and when he held his own up to examine it's edge, there was no sign of damage. Aside from the fine cracks running across the blade, but those had been there from the start. Jökul might have looked old, like one good blow would further shatter the steel, but it held strong. When he shifted the weapon back to an attacking stance, the swing was performed with more confidence. Damage: 7

This time, Before couldn't hold in the grunt. It hurt, he couldn't deny it, but he was used to getting hurt at this point. "Hooo, yeah, yeah that's the way," He uprooted Vanna from the ground, moving her in front of him protectively, like a shield. Only he may have miscalculated the distance between him and Oliver and might have accidentally poked the kid with one of Vanna's numerous spikes.
"Okay, so you've hit me three times, and that means you've built up a charge. Let it loose!" He had no idea what the kid could do, but Vanna assured him she still had enough in her FEAR shield to keep him alive.

"S-sorry!" Oliver yelped, pulling back so fast he almost tipped over under the weight of the axe. He felt a slight pain in his arm where the spikes in the hunter's wheel got too close to his arm, but to his credit he didn't make so much as a peep in protest. He was mostly just concerned about having actually let a real strike land. But his companion didn't seem phased. "Ah... a charge?" He asked hesitantly, but it was his weapon who answered the question for him. In it's own way. < >
"I-I wha-" Oliver let the tip of the axe drop, and the moment it levelled itself at Before there was a mechanical clicking noise. A quick hiss like escaping air. And then a bright beam of frigid energy blasted out towards the hunter, also striking two of the training dummies behind him. The force was enough to knock Oliver right off his feet from the unexpected recoil.
As he sat there on the ground in shock, his expression clearly said 'wtf just happened'. Jökul rumbled pleasantly in the back of his mind.

Before huddled behind Vanna, the blast crackling against her FEAR shield loudly. Heat surged past and around him and the sound of training dummies splintering behind him reached his ears. He peered through the gaps of Vanna's wheel, "You got great aim, kid." Before notes with a low whistle. "You still up for a couple more swings or would you like a break?" he asked with a lopsided grin.

"Ah... um... What was that?" Oliver asked nervously, still staring at the training dummies in the background like they had just exploded all by themselves. He could have kept going, but from the shocked look on his face it was safe to say he was temporarily down for the count. After a second he seemed to realize he was still sitting on the ground, and scrambled back to his feet. This time he was very careful about how he held the axe. "D-do all weapons do that?"

Before gave Oliver a smile, "That, kid, is your partner's charge ability. It's like, um, having a super power you gotta build up for. You gotta hit something with FEAR three times so's your weapon got something to use. Not all charges are like that blast cannon you got there," he laughed.
He lifted Vanna to his side and once again the spikes shot out at the training dummies. Or the remaining ones that the kid didn't blow up at least. "That's my third charge," Before explained. "Now, don't go thinking it's easy to hit with your charges. Awesome as our partners are, there's still this human error we totes gotta worry about."

And just to prove his point, the runes etched all along Vanna's surface began to glow. A light brush of his hand on the illuminated symbols sent the spikes shooting skywards, allowing gravity to eventually take effect. The points struck true, digging into Before's FEAR shield as the light traveled from wheel to hunter.
"Some of our Charges can be used for like support stuff. I'm a Misty, so's it's best I gots charges that can heal, help, and hit." He beamed at himself, mostly for that impromptu alliteration that he totally did not have ready since he got promoted to full Hunter.
