Ama huffed, rolling her eyes as she watched Jiji dive towards the nest. The young khehora, despite his boasts, seemed to be rather inexperienced with fighting. Her attention flicked to the dragons below as she felt the air crackle with the kiandri magic. She growled, tucking her wings in close to her and diving just as Jiji brought up a shield with his gali magic. Another arc of lightning made its way towards Jiji. She spread her wings, slowing her descent so that she was above the dragon charging for Jiji with its magic. Ama’s magic reached out, arcing through the sky and into the attacking dragon’s back. It roared, a deafening sound as it’s attention locked on Ama. She reached for Kilian through their bond, desperate for him to reach them as quick as possible. She swooped, claws extended and grabbing at the dragon’s neck, digging her claws into its flesh and holding on.

She felt the crackle of energy again, looking up just in time to see the flash of lightning traveling her way. Ama was forced to release the dragon in her grip, pushing up into the air and away from the attack. “Jiji! There’s too many. We can’t do it by ourselves!” She dove again, aiming for the same dragon she’d had hold of as she tried to plead Jiji to abandon the nest. The roar of another dragon sounded just as the crack of bones under Ama’s claws could be heard. She didn’t have to look. Ama already knew that Kilian had joined in on the fight.

Raw energy split the air, cracking through it like broken white snakes of electricity and coming down with the frequency of rain drops. Jijikko’s pulse beat hard, stuttering up his long throat and making his blood race through the rest of him. Distantly, he heard Amadia’s call to retreat, but — as foolish as the idea of diving in unplanned seemed now, in retrospect — he had started this, and he wasn’t about to let the kiandris hurt her. So, instead, Jijikko roared, shaking off the residual sparks of current and diving for the nearest dragon neck he could spot.

He latched on, sinking his fangs in as hard as they would go and dive rolling sidelong with the squalling monster. Claws raked at his front, tearing over the more sensitive scales of his underbelly; both of their wings beat wildly against and around each other, tangling together, but thankfully, the kiandri did not have the size advantage here. Jiji, young but full grown and sizeable thanks to his gaili heritage, out weighed the small lighting dragons easily, and — despite his inexperience — held his ground marginally well. At least, against one.

After several tumbles through the earth, one over the other, over the other, and back again, each struggling to get the upper hand, Jijikko smashed his hind paws down, using his weight and his vice grip on the beast’s throat to root himself as he shoved. Then, he yanked at his magic, dragging the earth up on either side of his foe and then crushing it in around it. A last, dying ripple of kiandri magic jolted through him with the dragon’s final squawk, and Jijikko stumbled backwards, dizzy and already bleeding across the front.

Maybe this really hadn’t been the best of plans…

Jijikko shook himself, trying to coax his mind back to itself and re-assert control over his muscles. He’d only taken down one. That left…

After looking out at the remaining nest in an uproar, lightning whipping down from the sky in white slits, accompanied by booms of thunderous energy, Jiji felt his posture wobble. Foresight was apparently not his strong point. They had looked so much smaller and weaker from a distance, while they were sleeping.

“Ama!” Kilian’s voice was drowned out by the roar of the dragons. He cursed as he skidded to a halt at the edge of the dragon nest. Electricity sparked through the air, causing the hair on his body to stand on ends. It had been ages since he’d felt a kiandri’s full power and it was as nerve wracking now, as ever. He scanned, searching for Ama in the midst of the dragons now fighting the two Khehora’s. Spotting her, he couldn’t help but grin. ’Good job.’ He sent the message over their bond just as the dragon caught in her claws turned to dust.

He pulled his daggers out of their sheaths as he began to move. The first kiandri he encountered was larger than the rest. Maybe the alpha male of the group. Kilian had to jump back as a bolt of lightning slammed into the sand in front of him. His grip tightened as he shot forward, narrowly avoiding the incoming tail of the dragon. He ducked, sweeping to the side and bringing his blades up, slicing into the dragon’s chest and throat. A gurgled roar sounded as the dragon began to collapse, slowly disintegrating into dust. Blood dripped from his blades as he moved deeper into the group.

At a glance, Kilian could see that five more dragons remained. “Kilian!” Ama’s voice roared over the dragons and Kilian looked just just in time to see a sixth, smaller dragon charge at him. He braced himself, grunting at the impact the dragon made with him. He fell back, tumbling to the ground. Kilian rolled, getting out of the charging dragon’s way so as not to be stomped on. Ama dove, wings expanding as she touched down on the ground in front of Kilian. Her magic shot out at the same time, lightning clashed with lightning as khehora and dragon battled it out. Soon, it was obvious that the dragon was younger than what Kilian had first thought and though Ama’s magic wasn’t as strong as a feral’s, she soon overpowered the smaller dragon. Her lightning broke through the other’s, coursing down its body. Kilian pushed himself up from the ground just as the dragon’s body turned to dust.

Jijikko watched with exhausted awe as Kilian and Amadia fought. He knew — from his parents, primarily, but also outside sources in passing — that bondeds were at an automatic power disadvantage to feral khehora. His parents, strongly against the bonding process, had made it out to be a villainous seeping of magic: natural khehora power stolen to be used by the greedy Magescians who forced the bond on them so young. But Ama, clearly, had earned her strength and, little as he liked to admit it, surpassed him in skill by a great deal in spite of her handicap. And the Magescian, Kilian, fought like he was born to spill dragon blood.

As he watched, Jiji felt a rush of new eagerness — only slightly marred by the pain across his front from the still-bleeding chest raking he had so recently received. One day he wanted to fight like that. Switch effortlessly into his own, proud two-legger form and twist blades about like a natural part of his body, then shift back and roar like a true khehora as he took back on his natural shape, baring his fangs and claws for his foe to behold in fear.

This all in mind, Jijikko rallied his courage, shoved back the temporary pains across his chest, and dove into the fray, wings splayed wide and teeth bared. At first, it went decently well. He dive tackled a second kiandri, dragging up an extra protective plate of earth to smash into it first with the hopes that this would stun it, and keep its claws away from his already-injured underbelly. To further that hope, he quickly worked himself around, attempting to latch on the creature’s back and keep hold there, instead of allowing it to rake at him.

The dragon snarled, its scales electric and rippling with natural energy, and it fought, rolling against Jiji’s hold and attempting to flip their positions. Almost as soon as he latched on, too, its defensive magic sparked into life, sending small rivers of current up Jijikko’s claws and making it difficult to hold tight. By the second shock wave, Jiji’s grip failed, the pulse of it sending him flying back with a pained roar and landing him, unfortunately, directly into the paths of two more of the remaining dragons.

One each latched onto his wings, dragging him down out of the sky and pinning him to the earth like a stick-pinned insect on display, their claws burying themselves into the soft, inner membrane of his wings to keep him still. He thrashed, snarling, his tail whipping about back and forth, but between his inexperience and their combined strength, his efforts seemed in vain, and as the third moved in, maw opening up directly before him with a gathering ball of growing, white-yellow electricity, Jijikko wondered, for the first time, if his eagerness to dive in might wind up having been not simply a novice miscalculation, but a fatal mistake.

“Jiji..” Ama whined as she heard his struggles. “We’ve got to help.” She growled as she jerked around, spotting him almost instantly. Two dragons had him pinned as another loomed over him, readying for an electric shock that would surely kill the khehora. Ama snapped her jaws, roaring as she took off, Kilian cursing and close behind her. Ama lunged, teeth bared and claws extended as she slammed against one of the dragons pinning Jiji’s wings to the ground. She sunk her teeth into the dragon’s neck, pulling and jerking the kiandri away from Jiji. They rolled, tumbling across the sand as tails and wings beat against each other.

At the same time, Kilian threw one of his blades, aiming for the dragon readying it’s magic. The sword stuck into the dragon’s neck, the magic dimming, followed quickly by the ashes of the dragon. He grit his teeth as the other dragon holding Jiji down turned on him, his previous prey forgotten for Kilian. “That’s right, it’s me you want.” Kilian growled out as he switched the blade in his left hand over to his right. His grip tightened as the dragon roared. He waited, moving back slightly, coaxing the dragon away from Jiji. The dragon spun, bringing its tail down just as Kilian jumped back. Kilian moved, swinging his blade upwards and slicing into one of the dragon’s wings. It jerked back, roaring in pain as Kilian moved forward again, shoving his blade forward and into the kiandri’s side. As he pulled his blade out, it turned to dust.

Ama swung her tail, smashing it into the kiadri’s face. The dragon retaliated, slashing against her exposed chest as she spun back around. Roaring, Ama staggered back. Kilian hesitated as the pain that ripped through her body spread into his own. He gripped his chest as he glanced up just in time to see Ama shake the attack off. She lunged, biting down on its neck again. Bone crushed as blood gushed out and the dragon turned to dust.

Not worrying about the other two dragons that seemed to of disappeared, Kilian moved over to Jiji, kneeling down in the sand next to the Khehora and petting him on the head. “You’re hurt,” Kilian said as he glanced over Jiji’s body. Frowning, Kilian reached for his pack, all thoughts on cleaning the wounds spread over Jiji’s.

Jijikko watched, wide-eyed with surprise as his company dove in to his aid, Amadia tackling and slinging one of his oppressors off and then Kilian exterminating the one directly before him with a practiced toss and gouge of his blade. When the third moved, releasing its grip in order to turn its focus to Kilian instead, Jijikko whined, giving a low, rumbling mix between a growl and a mewl as he tried to push upwards and help. His wings failed him, however, pain shooting through them like a shock effect when he tried to lift himself up. His belly, too, was apparently injured enough to provide a growing blood stain to the sand beneath him, which he flopped back down on with the onslaught of pain.

Contrarily, Kilian clearly had control of his own situation, nimbly avoiding the kiandri’s attacks and eventually burying another blade in its side. When he approached, kneeling and running a hand over Jiji’s head, Jijikko’s scales rippled with embarrassment, but instead of a stalwart reply, only a soft keen came from his throat before he managed to gather his voice properly.

“I’m alright. It’s just a little blood. Got to spill some to learn, right?” Jiji winced, the larger, fin-like striped scales along his neck flexing and wavering slightly with abashment as he thought on how much trouble he’d caused his helpers. Despite his initial genuine enthusiasm, he knew now — realistically — he never would have survived the fight without their aid, and his current injuries were the stinging result of his own folly. Not to mention, on top of that, he had endangered them both in the process of endangering himself. “I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have—” Jijikko tensed, snout jerking up and the far tip of his tail twitching sharply at a new, unwelcome scent. Almost immediately, he spotted it, high in the sky but plummeting downwards fast in a sharp dive towards Kilian: one of the last remaining kiandri’s. “Look out!”

Kilian shook his head, smiling. He remembered a time when he had acted exactly like Jijikko - stubborn and tough. He was sure there were still times when he still did so. He was about to wave off Jiji’s apology, knowing only too well what would have happened at they not been there with him. Kilian didn’t mind helping and kiandris were rather easy for the pair of them anymore. Kilian froze, momentarily, at Jiji’s words before his body shot into motion. He swiped up one of his blades, waiting until the very last second before he turned, swinging the blade up and only narrowly missing the dragon’s neck by an inch as it beat its wings and flew back.

The dragon bared its teeth, growling and snapping at Kilian as he rose. Just as he lunged, the second dragon made itself known. Kilian’s gaze jerked from the dragon in front of him and up into the sky. The dragon in front of him used the lack of attention as an opportunity. Kilian grunted as the dragon’s tail made contact with his stomach, sending him flying back and landing in the sand next to Jiji. Kilian groaned as he looked up in time to see the dragon readying a lightning attack aimed at Jiji. Kilian forced himself up, forced himself to move as the attack was released. He lunged, throwing himself in front of Jiji and taking the brunt of the electrical attack to his stomach. Kilian groaned as he was thrown back by the attack. He hit the ground just as everything around him started to go black.

Amadia froze, pain shooting through her body as Kilian went down. In the next instant she was seeing red. She roared, teeth bared and her magic flowing over her skin wildly. She attacked, heedless of any danger to herself. Her magic shot out, stunning the first dragon as she ripped into its throat, downing it easily. She turned, snarling at the remaining dragon. Whether out of fear or not, it turned, taking off into the sky and fleeing. Ama shoved off the ground, flying high up into the air after the dragon. She quickly caught up, moving in on the dragon and clamping down on its back with her claws. She hung on tight as it flailed, struggling mid air to be released. Ama didn’t budge, however and they started to spiral downwards. As they neared the ground, Ama released her grip, shoving at the dragon and sending it crashing down to the ground.

Ama landed but didn’t stop as she ran to Kilian. She whimpered as she nudged his side with her snout. “Kilian…?”
