Robert opened his mouth to protest the idea that she could ask questions about it, but closed it just as fast. She would no doubt argue him under the table over it, and she would win.

She would always win.

His smile returned. "You can wear it."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 19, 2014 3:49 am

Most of the categories were eliminated with the confirmation that she could wear it. Of course, this also meant that it might stretch beyond areas that she could comfortably say she knew, but she would have to risk that. If she didn't, she would never arrive at a conclusion.

"Can it be worn as it is, or would it require modification or additions? Is wearing it the primary function, or simply an option?"

Slowly, she pulled her hand away from his, and pressed the object between her palms.

As soon as she pulled her hand away, he inched closer, settling his hands on top of hers all over again. He refused to let the contact end, for the duration of the game.

"Wearing it is the only function." He chuckled out quietly. "I already made the modifyings. I fixed it up real nice."

His hands over hers seemed indicative of some sort of new rule, and Mimsy resolved that she was now only allowed to examine it as far as the confines of his contact would allow. It elevated the challenge, but did not make it impossible.

"You did?" Interesting. Which of his skills would have granted him the capability to make something that she could wear? "Is it worn in hair? Around the neck? On a hand?"

Robert pulled back, scratching his hair as he gave this particular question some thought. "Well, you could wear it anywhere you wanted, I guess. It's not like it has to go somewhere." He turned, so that he was sitting beside her instead of in front of her, and rested his head on her shoulder.

"Do you wanna hint?"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 19, 2014 4:17 am

Versatility meant that they had absolutely ventured into the area lacking expertise. Most of what Mimsy knew had very specific functions, as direct as plugging the correct variables into an equation to balance it.

Taking a hint could highlight that she didn't know, but she suspected that she wouldn't know if she refused.

"One factual statement, unprompted by a question. Please."

There. Now it wasn't a hint anymore.

Factual.. state.. ment...

"Hey, hey, hey." He bonked his head against her shoulder. "This is my game, okay. I get to make the rules, not you. You gotta play my way! And my hint ain't no factual nothing. It's a quote! From a movie, even. You don't gotta know the movie, but if you're curious, it's called It's a Wonderful Life, and it's very very good. But the quote is all you need."

He lifted his head off of her shoulder, and leaned in close, pressing his lips against her cheek. When he quoted Clarence, he did so with a very soft, meaningful whisper against her skin.

"What is it you want, Mimsy? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That's a pretty good idea. I'll give you the moon, Mimsy."

Though his lips remained, that was all she was going to get.

Fair enough, Mimsy supposed, even if her preference would have been to have greater influence over the rules of his game. There was time to work on that.

She was thankful that it was not a requirement for her to have watched the movie he referenced, because she definitely hadn't. To make up for it, she listened more critically than she typically would have, dissecting it piece by piece.

All of those questions at once held a desperate alacrity that she liked very, very much. Especially when it came from Robert.

"Removing the moon entirely would have catastrophic consequences, and...I believe that I might have recognized those, even in my quadrupedal state." She made a thoughtful sound. "Ah. Have you given me a portion of the moon?"

DAMNIT. Why had he chosen a quote with the word moon IN IT? Stupid, stupid, STUPID. The game was over quicker than he'd hoped for, and he slumped against her, laughing despite his defeat. "You got me." His phone was in his hand - one of the necessary items he'd stuffed in his pockets when he left the room. He touched it to turn its light on, and aimed it at the small item in her hand.

Small, smoothed, and cut into the saddest, most disfigured shape of a heart ever, was the small lunar meteorite Robert had bought for Mimsy during his visit to the mall. "I got the box at home, so you can tell it's authentic. But I used this thing we got in the labs, it was a runic laser cutter, and I went pewpewpew, pewpew! Until it looked like a heart." It had a hole in it, perfect for whatever she wanted to hang it off of. "Sorry it's kind of a mess.. but I'm not so good with little things." His arms wrapped tightly around her waist, which made him drop the phone and its light into her lap. "Except you of course! BAHA-"

Robert; one of the few people who considered Mimsy a little thing, curled her up against him and cuddled ferociously. There was a tiny part of him that was scared beyond words. If she didn't like it, some small childish little boy inside of him would feel too heartbroken to survive. He covered up his need with laughter and tight holds, because this wasn't about him. It was for her. Everything about this moment was for her.

The little boy inside of him begged her to like it, and Robert never let him be heard.

It never occurred to Mimsy that she could own a section of the cosmos. She knew the night sky with a memorized intimacy, but never felt as if any of it belonged to her quite like this. The sense of ownership that accompanied her extensive knowledge astronomical knowledge was simply not comparable, now that she had experienced this sensation. Pairing the physical object in her possession with her mental compilations of information...it was almost euphoric.

The meteorite was technically insignificant, so negligible that space had literally thrown it away, but it was the only piece of space that she had ever touched. It fit so easily in her hand.

It was hers.

She smiled, crooked and prideful and possessive, illuminated by the phone in her lap.

"Yes, I did. I got you." The smile widened as she laughed, obviously pleased with herself. Pleased with this. "Thank you. This is an exceptionally thoughtful gift."

Each time the phone light dimmed, she prodded another button to keep it lit, using it to examine her present more thoroughly. It was mostly in the shape of a heart, which was admittedly impressive in its own right - the fact that Robert had not reduced the entire sample to lunar dust was almost too amazing to believe.

"Oh...if the fog permanently returns, I will still be able to view a celestial object," she mused, settling into the arms wrapped around her, taking care to ensure that she could still breathe. It was an important precaution. "An incredible thought, isn't it?"

She sounded pleased, but he knew that could have easily just been for his sake. So he watched her, as she continued to poke his phone, turning the light on. Again and again, she refused to stop looking at it. And then she settled comfortably into his embrace, and he realized he was crying. It was the most embarrassing thing - he was finally thankful for the dark.

"Yeah." His hoarse voice scratched out. "Incredible." He lowered his head, resting it against her as the rest of his body slowly relaxed. She'd liked this one. He did a good job. He was good boy.

He sniffed, and tightened his hold around her. "I'm glad you like it." Glad was an understatement, but she didn't need to know just how desperately he needed her to approve of the gift. All the pointless chocolate and flowers had been worth it, in the end. They made this particularly thoughtful and specific present look even better. He wished he could consider himself brilliant for concocting such a plan, but it simply wasn't the truth. He just got her the other stuff because that's what boyfriends do.

Boyfriends. Hah. He didn't consider himself a boyfriend, anymore. Just a part of something much better than it was before.

"Mimsygirl." His voice was a shaky whisper. "I was thinking. Don't wanna live in Lucky's forever. I could get a new dorm for us, but. I guess, maybe I thought it was time I grew up a little. I've been working in the towns and - and I was thinking 'bout making one of them houses for myself." He sucked in a sharp breath. "For us."

The way that Robert responded confused her again, and Mimsy allowed the light to go out on the phone in favor of trying to determine what he was thinking. Everything he said was so short, as if it were difficult, but not abrupt in the sense that something angry might be.

Had she made him sad?

He hugged her tight, and she rested her head against him in thought. It was a pity that she could not simply gain information through physical contact. That would be incredibly convenient, especially in these circumstances.

"All right," she slowly said, brow furrowing as she struggled to comprehend the context of his words and his tone together. "Is there an obstacle that is preventing you from doing so? Do you need my assistance? I am not currently familiar with the process, but I am certain that I can help resolve any complications that have arisen."

A house was another very good choice, on his part. More privacy, more secrecy, more space for projects. Less intrusions. She smiled.

He was learning so well.

Her response was so typical, so perfect in its obliviousness, that he backed his head up enough to let out a bark of laughter. With it came every ounce of anxiety he'd been holding up until this moment; suddenly flush with foolish relief. Why did he ever expect anything but the perfect answer from her? Was he really that stupid?

Still chuckling, he leaned back in to kiss her neck. "No, unless you count time and effort as obstacles, which I never do. But yeah you can help, I'm sure there's lots of technical s**t involved in building a house that I would need your help with! Like lighting and plumbing and uh, measuring s**t." If he'd been left to his own devices, the house would have probably looked more like a kindergarteners gingerbread house attempt. Was there ever any doubt he needed her?

He paused, thought about the question, and buried his face into the patch of skin he'd kissed. He had no doubts left, anymore.

"I'm gonna take you home." He promised. "I'm gonna make it, and then I'm gonna take you there, and I'm gonna show you what it means to be home. That'll be my real present to you, every Valentine's Day." His hands brushed affectionately up and down her arms. "For the rest of our lives."

The laughter confused Mimsy even further, but she no longer felt the need to determine why he was feeling what he was feeling. If she had made him laugh, and he was content enough to kiss her so affectionately, she didn't have anything to fix. He was happy because of her, and that was how it was supposed to be.

"My expertise is in more theoretical mathematics, but I will certainly confirm that the structure is mathematically sound." With a pause and a hmm, she mulled over the potential solutions that would be more beneficial. "Lucky is more skilled in engineering, which is part of what makes us such an exceptional scientific team, so I feel confident that we can achieve this project. And then...yes. We will experience the benefits of a home together. I am excited to learn what it means to be home, in addition to learning anything else that permanently living in that home - together - might entail."

As strange as it might have been, she was truly intrigued. 'Home' was a versatile and generally meaningless word to her, but it seemed to have some significance to him that she was missing. Maybe it meant having everything important in one place.

"Perhaps you could consider an addition that would allow us to view the sky, whenever possible. If you think that it is feasible, I would also like to house my hydrangea there." Her lips brushed against his ear as she spoke quietly to him, a list of entirely new wants building in her mind. "I do not want anyone else to be able to enjoy it in the same way that I do."

It was hers, after all. He had given it to her, and her alone. In no way would it be fair to continue to so recklessly allow anyone else be able to enjoy it when they had not worked for it. She ran her fingers through his hair, and pressed her cheek to his.

"You know how much I enjoy what is mine," she whispered.
