The gypsy frowned at the tone beneath those words. There was bitterness there, bubbling beneath the surface like a festering wound. Gods all knew that she had issues of her own a mile wide, but she hardly held herself as the standard for a good way to live. Would it be hypocritical of her to press the issue? Certainly. In fact, it seemed to be an ongoing theme for her of late. But that didn't mean she wouldn't.

Really. Why stop with the Freds?

"Tea would be nice," she agreed, and indeed, the food was looking more appetizing than it had when she had first set foot in the room. "But since you don't seem inclined to speak with anyone else, why don't you tell me. Might as well get it out of the way." Then they could never speak of any of this again for as long as either of them lived, for all she cared. In fact, the prospect held a great deal of appeal. This whole day had gotten turned on its ear. Why not add to the absurdity before the time had passed?
PostPosted: Sun Mar 09, 2014 10:16 pm

For the moment at least, the blacksmith was more concerned with setting out cups for the tea, carefully measuring a spoonful of the leaves each into the strainers. The action was causing her a good amount of difficulty, her head wouldn't stop spinning the entire time, and it was clear she was having issues bending over and keeping her balance. She probably would be better with being miserable laying down, where she couldn't possibly knock things over or have to worry.

Rajani's words, however, make her wince when she finally comprehends them, and she straightens up as best she can, shaking her head. "Really Raj, it's.....It's not pleasant. I'm sure you've got your share of bad memories, things that happened that you regret." She's trying to convince her, she really is, but just even having to think about telling someone....Did she really want to shut Raj out? Maybe it would help to talk about it...But at the same time, weren't those kinds of talks better suited with ones lover? She was sure Last would never ask, and that was a bit of a relief in and of itself, but Rajani....Rajani liked getting her way, and probably wasn't going to let this go until she gave in.

Frankly she didn't feel like arguing.

With a deep, heavy sigh, she finally came back to the table, sitting down as best she could without collapsing, or making it overly obvious she wasn't quite...well.

"Fine. Fine. You win, just...." She hesitated, unsure of how to continue. "Just don't tell Last, alright? He doesn't need to know about this, I'd like to keep it that way." Thinking about it, she's not quite sure why she's so opposed to Last knowing. He hasn't once rejected her because of something that's happened to her, he didn't care one bit about her hands, or the way her work has marked her body. Why would he care about what's happened in the past, the things she's done?

"I still don't see why you want to hear about my father." She murmurs in a low voice, quietly fussing with her hands in her lap.

The gypsy frowned at the difficulty Rosalie was having. Oh, she was trying not to be obvious about it, but it was noticeable enough to Rajani. However, she was more focused on wheedling more information out of the lady smith, and was thus not paying quite enough attention to her physical state. How easily she capitulated ought to have been clue enough that something more was amiss, but Rajani was admittedly distracted. She was, after all, focusing very intently on Rosalie's personal life and trying to ignore her own inner turmoil as much as possible for the time being.

"Your words needn't pass beyond those in this room," she assured. Really. She was hardly the type to go around divulging others' deepest secrets. Of course, she hadn't been in a position to be privy to such secrets in a good long while, but she very much doubted that her basic principles had altered that much over the years.

Ah. So it was about her father, after all. The gypsy's eyes narrowed minutely at those words, but she refused to give them and credence by responding to them. Best not encourage ridiculous beliefs.

"It still doesn't bloody matter, it never has and never will again. He's dead, after all, dead people don't come back, no matter what you do." She shakes her head, cupping it in her hands, "Frankly this would be a whole lot easier if I had a drink. Y'know, something nice and stiff, maybe whiskey or some--..." She stops short, feeling the glare coming from her guardian. There's a frustrated noise that rises up in her throat, and she obviously knows damn well it'll be next to impossible to get a good drink after what happened earlier in the week. If Last won't allow it, neither will Aelius.

It will take a good couple sighs, the blacksmith fighting with her feeling on the matter and whether she really feels like talking about it. There is, however, no stopping the gypsy when she feels she must know about things, and apparently, this is one that won't slide by. "I wasn't a terribly good daughter to my poor dad." She finally begins, just letting her eyes slip shut, trying to remember how things had been, "It's been years since he died, I know it has, but hell, I drank away all my sorrows then too. We butted heads a lot, I said a lot of things I still regret, like that one time I told him my mother was happier being dead than with him. I think we both kind of hurt each other that fight, I don't think I knew why she was dead before that." There's enough left unsaid to know exactly why, and she doesn't seem to want to say it all. "A lot of things like that, we'd rile each other up and end up saying things we didn't exactly mean, and it wasn't until he got so sick...."

It's easy to tell what happened after that, the way she just slumps in her seat says enough. It's only after a pause, after the silence settles in, giving her enough time for a few shaky breaths as she tries to steady her voice again, barely hushed above a whisper. "I deserved it. I never deserved the chance to say goodbye, I was so terrible to him after all he did for me. I can't even remember how many times I told him I hated him, but he still..." She chokes up, just a tiny bit, and tries to pass it off as a cough instead. Her hand clenches in her hair, the locks already falling out of place much earlier, and this pause lasts much longer than the previous ones. "He still, after all I did, after all I said, said he was proud of me. I don't deserve that Raj. I haven't done a single thing to make him proud. I've ******** up hundreds of times over, and I can't even keep friends, I just end up hurting them all because I'm too stupid to realize that actions have consequences."

At the very least she's managed to keep herself from crying, though she's shaking at trying to keep it all in at the end, just trying to breathe through it.

"See? It's just a lot of stupid things, it's nothing you really should worry about. Just me, unable to get over something that happened over eight years ago, as per usual."

For a moment, the gypsy's temper caught hold of her and her hands tightened into unseen fists beneath the table, yet almost as soon as the anger appeared, it was gone. It was impotent anger, self-righteous and useless here. Rosalie did not need to be yelled at - or perhaps she did, it had worked before; but Rajani suspected that it would not really change anything. Not now. Not when the younger woman was already so inclined to eviscerate herself over her perceived sins.

Instead, Rajani listened. The description reminded her faintly of herself and her mother, though the situation wasn't really the same at all. She pushed those thoughts aside. This was about Rosalie. Rosalie, who was so ashamed of herself that she denied herself any worth as a daughter, perhaps even as a person. Rosalie who would rather drown her sorrows than face herself. Rosalie, who was suffering through all of this by herself.

Rajani stood and stepped slowly around the table. Once she stood as close to Rosalie as the chair would allow, she gently gathered the other woman against her and stroked her hair as she had once done for her sister.

"You were his daughter," she said, as though those words explained everything, and in a way, they did. No good father could help but love their daughter, and no loving father could help but be proud of Rosalie - temper and impulsiveness included.

It was hard, it was so very hard, for her to realize she had just told Raj everything. This was something no one should care about, it was her own damn issues, and why the hell should she share such a private, such a hurtful thing? Surely Raj had her own little problems to work out, didn't everybody? Hell, she was sure somewhere behind his grin, Last would have something too, but that didn't make her all the more eager to go and tell him all about her own. It took another few hard swallows to steady herself, trying to smile at the end like it didn't bother her, but surely the woman knew better.

She half expected Raj to yell at her, to tell her to get over herself, or to slam another knife on the table. Her experience with her had taught her to expect this, and surely she was already asking for it for what she had done with her 'brothers'. Thus, when Raj finally got to her feet, she wasn't sure what to expect, and instead kept her eyes on her hands, neatly folded in her lap now as she just tried to breathe.

Never in her life would she have expected what came next, she'd never expected to be carefully gathered into Raj's arms and held against her in a manner that was actually comforting. Was this even the same woman? Was this really Rajani? She tensed up for a moment, fully expecting to be called an idiot despite her far more gentle demenor.

But it never came.

You were his daughter. She wanted so badly to argue all the reasons she wasn't, to let just a little bit of that bottled up hurt spill out, but it ended up coming out in a much different way than expected. She could barely muffle the choked sob that managed to sneak its way through the cracks in her emotions, raising a hand up to quiet herself more. It didn't help she knew Rajani could feel the heat coming off her face, the final nail in the coffin for knowing she was so ill, but for some reason she just didn't care.

"I didn't get to even say goodbye. The doctor just came, and went, and I went up to see him, and just like that..." At the least she manages to keep her voice steady, though she's obviously hurt. "He'd probably smack me upside the head if he heard one word of this, he didn't put up with anything. Stubborn old man, guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree..."

Rajani remained quiet as Rosalie said what was really bothering her, what had been festering inside of her all these years. Best lance the wound and bleed out the poison now. There might not be another chance, and even if the lady smith did not know it, she needed this. It was all part of healing.

It did not escape the gypsy's notice that the smith was running a fever. Her touch remained gentle, but inside, she was cursing herself for not realizing sooner. She had thought Rosalie was just hungover and stressed. She had thought that she was just tired and emotionally drained. That was no excuse. She should have known better. Of all people, Rajani should have known. Had she not had care of Lana for those short, precious years? Had she not nursed her sister through many a fever? She should have recognized the signs right away.

Despite her anger at herself, refrained from rushing the younger woman to bed, feeding her soup and demanding she sleep. Instead, she continued to smooth her hand down Rosalie's hair. They needed to finish this first. Then. Then, she would lay down the law.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 08, 2014 5:47 pm

All and all it was nice to just have someone to listen, someone who she knew would give her a kick in the head when she needed it, and someone she could trust. Closing her eyes again, her head pounding from the combination of the fever and what her tears had brought, it wasn't long before she became aware of the kettle whistling in warning over the fire. Carefully, slowly, she removed herself from Rajani's arms, trying to offer a smile. "The...The tea." That was all that needed to be said, wasn't it?

It should have been easy, it should have just been something routine. After all, how hard was it to just walk over, pick up the kettle, and pour some boiling water? Normally it would be so easy, something she wouldn't even need to think about, but the moment she finally unhooked the kettle, everything just went wrong.

She had turned to say something back to Rajani, something probably laughing off what had just happened, trying to set it aside, when her hand slipped. It all seemed to occur in slow motion to her, the way the kettle just slowly dropped from her hand towards the coals, right towards--.

Oh s**t.

They say when you die, life tends to flash before your eyes. She was pretty damn sure that was what happening, she couldn't believe how she could remember so much, but that one time, the one time previous that this had happened, kept on going over and over in her mind. She'd been just lucky enough to get away with getting scaled by the hot water, surely that would happen again, right?

But the kettle, that damned kettle, hit the smelting pan that was nestled in the coals just right, and the molten metal went flying in the air.

Her apron took on the brunt of the attack, thank god she'd been wearing it, but it was where the well worn leather wasn't that mattered most. It had been pure instinct for her to raise her arm to shield her face, and it had probably been the best move she had made the entire day. Just a few drops had hit her forearms, just a small splash that would have been nothing if it had just been the water. She could feel it hit her arm, and then there was just a moment of numbness before the heat just hit her bone, spreading through her entire arm as the pain just hit her.

It just didn't occur to her how she'd ended up collapsed on the floor. When had her knees given out again? But she was just absolutely shaking, having enough sense to not curl up into a ball, holding her arm out bent in front of her as she struggled to get her goddamned apron off with her other arm. It had saved her, yes, but the heat was already seeping into her skin through it and her clothes, and the longer she left it on, well, the worse she'd get burnt. A number of words are being said, most of them things a lady shouldn't really be saying, but a good number of them are only half getting choked out as her eyes water and she's trying not to bite her tongue.

It ought to have felt odd, offering that kind of comfort to someone after so long without doing anything of the sort, but instead it simply felt right. Perhaps Rajani herself needed it just as much as Rosalie. A mutual comfort. Still, she did not resist as the younger woman pulled away. It occurred to her to protest that Rosalie ought to be resting, but she had dealt with Lana's stubborn self-sufficiency enough to know that even though Rosalie was sick, she would not be stopped from performing simple household tasks. Besides, what harm was there?

Not even Rajani's reflexes were enough to save Rosalie from halfway across the room. Not from that kind of accident. It couldn't have taken more than a few seconds, all told, but each of those seconds were branded into her mind. She would never be able to unsee them. The kettle falling, the red hot liquid metal flying into the air straight at Rosalie, striking her, boring into her apron, into her arm. The hiss and sickening stench of seared flesh. And the scream. Spirits, the scream.

Rajani supposed that it was a good sign that Rosalie was coherent enough to cuss, but that didn't stop her from flying across the room. Not bothering with the ties, Rajani simply cut the straps and tossed the heavy leather apron aside where it could do no harm.

Dragging Rosalie away from the fire and cooling metal, Rajani set her suddenly alert Guardian to the task of fetching fresh, cold water and a clean cloth. Oberon was quick to obey, and he brooked no argument when he demanded Aelius assist him. It would go faster if he didn't have to hunt for the necessary pieces.

When the gypsy was satisfied that they were far enough removed from any further danger, she inspected the damage, almost afraid of what she would find.

...all things considered, it could have been worse. Nonetheless, the holes burnt through Rosalie's flesh were ugly, vicious things. Rajani shoved aside her own sudden feeling of sickness and looked the younger woman over for any other injuries.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 22, 2014 7:21 am

It had been so nice while it had lasted. At last, something worked out, part of that horrible incident at least turned for the better. It had left her feeling a weight off her shoulders, albeit she still needed to work out a number of things with one other. But, it seemed, fate had another idea.

It stung. Rosa had been burnt before, yes, what blacksmith hadn't? But this, this was so much worse. She wanted to just cut off her arm, that would hurt even less than this, she was sure of it, but had to keep all of her will from just curling up and pressing it into the cooling splatter on her apron. Thank god, thank god Rajani was there with enough sense to just throw the ruined leather off her, thank god, because she sure didn't have enough sense. <********>." For the umpteenth time, that word just fell of her lips, and finally she could just hold her arm up to her chest, no matter that it was already stinging as well, she already knew it was going to blister. She was going to owe Rajani so much after today, so very very much for saving her from a worse fate, and doesn't even mind being dragged away. It's probably for the best after all.

Aelius doesn't even hesitate, grabbing an old shirt she had hung to dry on the banister, dropping it over by Raj before handing a pail to Oberon, knowing the awakened stag could likely run much faster. He'll nose at his Chosen's face in concern, sharing in a bit of her pain and trying to keep her calm.

It seems, at least, that this time she's gotten off light in comparison to what could have happened. There's her arm, of course, which is likely the worst of it, but then there's the angry red of her skin peeking out from under the worn shirt, hinting at the blisters yet to come. But other than that, and her fever, there's luckily not much else. Of course, given the way she's just cursing with every breath she has, that's as good a sign as any.

As she waited for Oberon to reappear with water, Rajani noticed the damaged skin over Rosalie's stomach. It was nowhere near as bad as her arm, but it would still hurt. At least they ought to be able to ease that. She caught Aelius's face between her hands to get his attention. "Fetch something for these minor burns. Whatever she normally uses." The gypsy didn't doubt that however careful Rosalie may or may not be, she had been burnt at least a few times in Aelius's lifetime. No doubt the lady smith kept some sort of ointment of salve for those instances.

After she sent him off, she set to work on the shirt, tearing it into appropriate sized strips. As she was finishing, Oberon returned at a somewhat more sedate pace than he had left at so as not to spill the water. He set the bucket down beside her and she dipped the shredded cloth into the cool liquid, wringing it out so that it was not too saturated. Gently and methodically, the gypsy bound Rosalie's deep wounds.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 27, 2014 6:16 pm

Aelius could only snort at her suggestion, though doesn't make any efforts to help. Doesn't she know this isn't something you do for this type of burn? Salve is for little ones, the ones that don't blister, and at least he knows something from listening to his chosen! But then again, how could Raj know? She doesn't even live here, she doesn't even forge. He can only look to his chosen, watching her hiss and try not to bite her tongue, punctuating every few breaths with curses for good measure. Well. At least she was still conscious, this was her problem and she could damn well tell Raj herself, right?

Alas, another shirt lost to the forge, though at least the well used garment was going to some higher purpose. Once Oberon returns she'll hiss more at the touch of it to her wounds, jerking her arm away at first before just bearing with it. "Don't need the damn salve." She'll choke out after a while, after an attempt to move her fingers. The skin is too tight, it hurts, she isn't going to be trying to move that hand for a while. "Not on these, these'll blister." It's a good sign she's at least semi-coherent, if not pale and shaky.

The gypsy frowned, but deferred to Rosalie's judgement on the matter. She knew well enough to leave the raw burns alone, but she had thought it would be fine for the ones on her stomach. But what did she know about burns? Most of Rajani's nursing experience had come from tending the ill, not those who decided that roasting themselves alive was a good idea. She had never come across burns as diverse or nasty as these in person.

So, she finished with the arm and moved on to the stomach, lifting Rosalie's shirt a little higher to reach all of the damaged areas. Even if there was nothing she could do to speed healing, the cold, damp cloth ought to help stave off infection and maybe help a little with the heat of the pain.

Satisfied with her work, Rajani moved to Rosalie's less injured side. "Is there anywhere else?"
PostPosted: Mon Apr 28, 2014 10:47 am

It was getting rather hard to keep her breathing steady, and she was fairly sure she was about to just stop all together. Her eyes were watering more and more with each touch of the wet bandages onto her arm, and she was fairly sure she was quivering so hard the earth was going to start shaking with her. It hurt, and frankly she just wanted something to knock her out, so she wouldn't have to feel the pain, or a doctor to look over her and tell her what else to do. She was damn sure she didn't know what to do about this, and Rajani probably had no idea either.

She isn't even embarrassed in the slightest when her clothing is thus further removed, she doesn't have the capacity to be at the moment. She feels so close to just teetering off the edge into whatever her pain throws her in to, and frankly, staying at the edge is making her dizzy. The coolness of the cloth, something that seems to just come out of nowhere, makes her hiss through her teeth again, jaw clenched as she just tries to blink through the pain a little more, anything to just stay awake.

"Just get a ******** doctor, hell if I know." The profanity was strong in her today. But really, she couldn't tell. There was pain, a lot of pain, and hell if she knew where it was coming from. "<********>." The room is just spinning a little more, and it just seems to get worse and worse. Whether it's the fever or the shock that finally takes her doesn't really matter, because she ends up unconscious either way.

Thank ******** god for Rajani.

When Rosalie finally passed out, Rajani sighed. It was probably for the best. At least she wouldn't have to suffer through her pain for probably a few blissful hours. Besides, she clearly needed the rest. Of course, Rosalie's descent into oblivion really wasn't a good sign, either.

The gypsy called for Hawthorn and gave him two messages - one for a doctor and one for Last - before she worked on the problem of how to get Rosalie into bed. Raj was strong, but she wasn't really up to the task of maneuvering the lady smith's dead weight up those stairs without further jarring her injuries.

It took a little doing, but between herself and two helpful Guardians, they managed. She stayed long enough to fill the doctor in on Rosalie's various conditions and make certain Last was up to the task of playing nursemaid before she left.

What a day. She may well strangle Rosalie next time she sees her.
