What did he get into?

Borra watched as Mira was taken away from her father and then quietly taken away to where he assumed was her bed. Making sure to acknowledge that the boys were picky about what they had to eat, and then warned that he wasn't to let his guard down. He almost laughed at that, rather sure of himself that this wouldn't be hard at all. All he needed to do was pull out his lute and perhaps play a game with them to get them settled. Give them an activity so he could get dinner ready, then they could play music and sing alongs before he tucked them all to bed to sleep. No problem right?

Giving a wave good bye to the parents as they informed him they would see him in the morning he wished them safe travels before he closed the door to the inn. Everything....was very quiet. Something about that was almost disturbing it was as if a damn was holding back a tidal wave of energy, for as soon as Borra turned out...Baroke gave a bleat and bolted.

Astounded Borra watched as the events unfolded before his eyes. Where the three boys were before standing all together they had now dashed after the raoti each one loudly proclaiming that they got to play with the animal first. The pet himself was fleeing out of stark panic as the loud boys now crashing around behind it was probably a terrifying sight.

It took a moment for Borra to register what was going on and in that delay a chair was toppled over, one boy crashed into a shelf as Baroke turned suddenly and fled down the length. The third was closing in.

Placing his fingers in his mouth Borra gave a sharp whistle, which his pet understood which was 'come to me' whilst it merely startled the three boys still. Silence fell over the scene although there was a shriek of girlish laughter as it was Lanara who managed to grasp Baroke for her own. Gathering the animal who was startled to find himself in her grasp instead of Borra's.

Trying not to sigh he smiled and tried to ...handle the situation.

"Verise could you help Lanara with Baroke? He looks a bit squished." Borra enlisted the eldest's help right away, as he didn't want Baroke running around causing the boys to get all excited again. Turning he then faced the three boys who were now dusting themselves off and eyeing their younger sister jealously.

"Race, Jerrad, Kair...I told you that you couldn't be rough right? Or Baroke wouldn't want to play? So none of you will get to play with him right now until we clean up the mess you boys caused." Trying to be firm but fair he was smiling as he moved towards them.

"Why? This isn't our home..its just an inn the owner will clean it up." Stated Kair who looked completely unwilling to help out in the manner.

"Yeah.." Piped up Race, "Let them clean it up. I want to play with the raoti now." A stomp of the foot announced the impatience of the second boy.

"I think I hurt my elbow.... Hey look! I am bleeding!" Chimed in Jerrad who seemed entirely too excited about the fact he was hurt and now his two other brothers crowded him to look at his 'battle wound' . It slowly dawned on Borra how this was going to go, the three boys didn't respect anyone it seemed except their parents.

"Now I am sure your parents wouldn't be happy if you left this place a mess. You made the mess so you have to clean it up." He tried to reinforce the concept that their parents disapproval may snap them into paying attention. Instead they briefly flickered their gaze at their babysitter before going back to Jerrad's bleeding arm. Apparently it wasn't a big enough threat to force them to behave. Giving a slight sigh he knew he would need to bandage up Jerrad's arm, hopefully they would let him.

"Alright now lets clean you up Jerrad, we can't have you bleeding all over the place." Borra continued as he went to approach the triplets who all glared at him. Obviously they didn't trust him or like him which struck Borra as odd.

"No. Don't touch me." Jerrad proclaimed his voice going a little high as if he might start screaming if Borra got any closer. His two brothers went to act like bodyguards getting between him and his injured charge. Licking his lips he looked over to Verise who was still with her little sister who was still holding onto Baroke as if he was a large stuffed animal. The poor raoti looked like he was in distress ...but Verise was able to keep her sister from squishing him too hard.

"Verise, do you think you could help your brother? Then I think its time we all go upstairs and make something to eat." Borra enlisted the eldest to help out even though it meant leaving poor Baroke at the mercy of Lanara. Torn at who to pay more attention to the young man moved over to where the little girl was and smiled at her, all the while trying to keep an eye on the boys as their eldest sister when to talk to them.

"Lanara you know you can let Baroke go...he won't run away but he doesn't look very comfy being squished like that."

Young innocent eyes looked up at Borra, though she was smiling as she looked down to the raoti and gave him another powerful squeeze. The roati bleated and struggled weakly as it didn't want to hurt her.

"But ..he will go." She stated the obvious as it looked as if the raoti would bolt as soon as he was given a chance.

"I promise you can play with Baroke some more, but its time to eat. Arn't you hungry?" Borra prodded, hoping that food would entice the girl to release his beloved pet, although she managed to just tighten her vice lick grip on him instead.

A sudden and very loud argument erupted from behind him, and a small shriek was launched into the air causing the poor man to jump. Turning he saw the three brothers ganging up on their older sister, obviously talks between them had gotten hot and they felt the need to pinch and climb on her to force her to the ground.

Straightening in alarm Borra rushed over, grabbing one arm and hauling one of the boys off (although who he wasn't quite sure in his panic). Removing a second one though now that both his hands were full keeping the two boys from running away from him. He didn't like being physical with children but in this instance he couldn't afford to let them go off where they would likely go after his pet again. At least Baroke with just with Lanara...who just didn't know how to hold him properly.

"Let go!"

"Yea! " The two boys complained rather loudly as they tried to use their own hands to get Borra to release from their wrists. The third was now losing the fight against their older and stronger sister, although he was now pulling on her hair causing her to raise her voice again.

"That is enough, your sister was just trying to help. Now I need you two to calm down before I will let go. Now Race.."

"I'm Race.." The boy on his right scrunched his nose as if being confused with one of his triplets was unforgivable.

"Now Jerrad..." Borra scrambled or another name though was lucky to have actually addressed the right one.

"Jerrad you need to stop fighting with your sister. It's time to make dinner so please get off of her, and let her tend your arm." The poor man was grasping at straws, there were just too many kids for him to look after...it was a foreign concept since normally children flocked to him, but then again he knew all the kids in the village. They liked Borra, liked to play games with him and listen to him play his lute.

A cry came from upstairs..Mira was awake.

Once the battle between siblings was over and the two boys stopped resisting his grasp he finally let go. Taking a deep breath they all looked to where Mira would of been sleeping, as if they could look through walls. Everyone went quiet as the sound of Mira's wail was enough to sober the mood.

"Alright, lets all go upstairs. I will make you dinner after I go get Mira alright?" Borra instructed and strangely they all nodded their heads and started to move in the direction of the staircase.

To Agree to Disagree

Able to gain some control over the pack, Borra was then quick to go an check on Mira. The youngest looking bewildered at the sight of Borra and quickly shying away from him.

"M..ama..." She sniffled rubbing the back of her hands against her wet eyes, and it was soon easy to see why she was crying as she had wet the bed. The smell was mild but due to the door of the room being shut it had managed to contain the smell within it.

"Its okay Mira, we will clean it all up, how about we give you a quick change and clean you up first okay?" Borra suggested with a calm voice though Mira didn't seem to want Borra to get any closer.

"Its time to clean you up, get you started for the day.." Borra sang very quietly trying to try and calm the girls fears of him, "Time to scrub, and rub a dub and make the dirt go away..." Slowly approaching her whilst he sang, it was true that he wasn't the greatest of singers, his talents laid with playing an instrument, but he wasn't terrible either. As he continued to sing he was finally able to scoop up the little girl who snuggled into his embrace and he took her to the bathroom.

Unable to leave her alone, he could only dread what was going on in the other room. The three boys were more than a handful, the eldest was helpful but it seemed even she got into scraps with her brothers. Then there was Lanara who had her death grip on his pet. He could only pray that Baroke didn't bite her...

It was..calming though to be with Mira, she was so quiet and shy though when he was able to get her to laugh she was positively delightful. Once she was all cleaned up she held her propped on his hip and walked to where the others were. He would wash the sheets as soon as he got the kids fed and perhaps doing something a bit more...constructive.

As soon as he entered the room all sets of eyes were on him. The boys were somber and perhaps it was due to the fact Mira had been crying. But she was safe and actually quite calm now.

"Alright, I think its time we got some food in your tummies," Borra began as he then tickled Mira's stomach causing her to giggle. "You hungry? Yeah? I think so I can hear the tummy monster grumbling!" He continued as he caused Mira to erupt in a fit of laughter as he tickled her. The boys were watching him carefully, as if passing judgment on him based on how well Mira liked him.

"So what do you all want to eat?" Borra inquired as he wasn't quite sure what to make such a hoard. Maybe sandwiches? It really does depend on what they had available in their pantry.

"I want porridge! " Jarred chimed in, whist his other brothers made a face,

"No I want mammu steak!"

"Naah I want soup!"

The chiming in of all the different things they wanted to eat made him shake his head. They couldn't have everything...he'd be cooking forever.

"Porridge is a breakfast food, and I don't think your brothers and other siblings look keen on eating that. Why don't we find something we all want." Borra tried to negotiate with the boys, while the girls Verise looked bored and Lanara continued to play with Baroke (who had managed to escape her grasp and was now playing keep away with himself).

"How about...I make stew? Its kinda like soup, and its thick like porridge and I can put mammu steak in it."

"NO." All three boys stated their disapproval at once. Borra sighed and went to put Mira down only to find that she didn't want to be let go and thus back on his hip she went.

"I can't make everything you asked for, I promise the stew will be good."

"Noooooooo." The boys chanted over and over again and began to parade around the kitchen table as if making their protest more intense. Well Borra was going to make stew anyway, it was something that everyone could eat and it was pretty healthy not to mention tastey.

"Verise, would you mind helping me? I am not sure where you keep all your vegetables. " Borra requested the help of the seven year old as she would have more knowledge than anyone else here.

"What...do you want?" She inquired as she went to the pantry and opened it slowly.

"Oh you know root vegetables, potatos..." Borra trailed off as Verise then went about gathering them in her arms. "Now where are those pots.." Borra mused to himself as he looked around pretending to be oblivious to the fact there was one on the counter behind him.

"Behind you stupid." Jerrad pointed, whilst his brothers glared at him as if helping Borra was not apart of their pact to be annoying to their babysitter.

"Where?" Borra continued to look bewildered before finally turning and 'spotting' the pot. "OH there? Is that it?" He inquired causing Mira to giggle again, "You going to help me cook Mira?" He inquired as he went to grab the pot with one hand, only to discovered it was rather heavy. "Oh my..I am just too weak to pick this up...if only there were some strong boys around.."

"I can do it!" Kair piped up, eager to show off his 'strength' as he rushed over to help pick up the item. It was heavy..for a boy his age but he merely grunted and then looked up proudly. "See?"

"Wow! I can't believe how strong you Kair, can you put it beside the fireplace?" Borra continued as suddenly a pile of vegetables were placed before him on the counter. That..was a lot more than he needed but..he never did specify how many he wanted.

"Thanks Verise, can you take Mira for me?' He inquired giving the little one a tickle before passing her off to her sister. Mira protested and sniffled, though was soon distracted by the roati. "Oati!" She stated as she reached for the animal and thus Verise had no other choice than to join her sisters in playing with the creature.

Making of Food and Fun Times

The best way to get kids to want to participate was to make the mundane interesting. Thus by posing as being too weak to hold up the pot he was able to get Kair to want to show off his strength. Now with Mira now immersed with playing with Verise and Lanara he had his hands free. Moving over to the fire place he was careful to use the tools there to place the cast iron pot over the flames.

"...what are you cooking? There is nothing in it!" Race commented sounding rather perturbed at what Borra was doing.

"I am making something special." Borra replied though the boys looked unconvinced.

"But ...don't you need water...?" Inquired Jerrad looking to where a bucket stood with clear water in it.

"Oh! do you think I should put some in?" Borra asked trying to look surprised at the suggestion, "Well I guess I can.." Moving he went to gather the bucket and then moved back over and carefully poured a portion of the water into the pot.

"Hmm...doesn't that smell good?" Borra continued and the boys looked confused, the moved over to the pot and tried to sniff the contents. But the water...was just beginning to steam and boil and there wasn't much smell at all..

"Your crazy...mommy puts spices in the water and some fat." Piped up Race as he had watched his mother cook many times in the past.

"Fat? Spices? Well...I dunno...if you think so." Borra continued as he got up and then rummaged through the spices they had before coming back. He was about to put in some unknown substance before Kair stopped him.

"No! not that one! Mama says that is too hot for kids." Obviously he recognized it to be a spice that caused mouths to go red from pain.

"Oh? Well which ones should I put in?" Borra inquired holding out other spices he had chosen that would be suitable. The first one of course had been a trick to see if the boys were paying attention. All three boys stared as the stuff in Borra's hands. Some were things they recognized others not. Pointing they picked, salt...skipped over the pepper, and then some leaves that were used mostly for aroma. Nodding his head he placed the picked spices into the pot before getting up and putting the rest away.

Opening a pack of mammu fat he cut off a tiny sliver with a knife and plunked it into the pot.

"More!" Jarred chimed as he watched the fat melt quickly into the water and spices. Cutting more thing slices of the fat he counted the pieces until there was five thing slices into the pot. "One more!" Jarred claimed as they were all very interested in watching how the fat melted. Considering he had only been cutting thin slices adding one more slice wouldn't be the end of the world. Besides it added flavor right?

The last piece plopped into the water and as he went to wrap up the fat and replace it back on the shelf the boys rushed back over to the counter. The room was beginning to smell nice. But now it was time to put the vegetables in. Reaching for a larger knife he went to grab an onion, the boys all frowned looking at him like he was crazy.

"What? You don't like onions?" Borra inquired only to be met with a series of shaking heads. "Well...I am not sure what to put in...what do you boys think?"

"Potatos! "

"Carrots!"

"Squash!"

The boys chimed eager it seemed to each have their favorite vegetable placed into the pot. With the boys getting more and more excited about helping out, it seemed that they had forgotten their earlier demands on wanting completely different things. Cutting up each vegetable the boys wanted (plus a little onion for flavor) Verise upon questioning only requested garlic be added, while Mira just giggled and Lanara was still too preoccupied with Baroke to care.

Going about and adding the garlic the room was starting to smell quite heavenly. Stirring the pot the vegetables were beginning to soften it would soon be time to put the meat in.

Moving over he found some meat, it appeared to be mammu steak, but he wasn't exactly sure just on sight alone. It was a bit on the smaller side, but then again it looked as if it had been cut a couple times in the past. Perhaps earlier that day? Moving the meat to the counter he began to pound it flat much to the boys dismay.

"Why are you hitting it?" Kair asked standing on his tip toes to watch as Borra continued to tenderize it.

"To make it flat." Borra commented only to earn raised eyebrows from the trio.

"Why would you do that?" Jerrad inquired not quite sure if Borra was sane or not...

"Well...I am not sure..should I stop?" Borra asked and the boys all nodded their heads as if it was an obvious thing to do at this point. Smiling Borra went about cutting up the meat into small chunks and then once done moved to place the meat into the pot. The soup was at a rolling boil, the food would be ready soon..or at least once the meat was cooked through.

The boys were hungry, they were always hungry of course as they were growing constantly and now the smell of the soup that was cooking was starting to make their mouths water.

The sheer fact none of them had originally wanted stew...and though it was more a soup right now than a stew, Borra seemed intent on making it despite the fact the boys hadn't wanted it in the first place. Somehow they had gotten involved in the cooking process, helping Borra as he seemed too stupid to do it on his own and now...as the older man was adding a few other things to thicken the mixture they realized they had been tricked.

Though they were hungry, and as the mixture was simmering the idea of fighting for something else to eat disagreed with the rumblings tummies.

A small bowl was brought out, this one for Mira as her food would need to cool and be cut into smaller chunks before everyone elses. Placed on the counter and then larger bowls were brought out.

"I don't...want that." Jerrad started as Borra began to ladel, the older man looking surprised and then shrugged.

"Are you sure? I mean..you boys made it..I wouldn't of known what to do if you hadn't helped me with it."

The three boys hung back as their sisters went to gather their own bowls. Verise helping Lanara with her food and putting her at the table. Mira was helped as well to a sitting position making grabby hands at the utensils. The smell was beggining to eat away at their resolve...and the one who had wanted soup in the first place caved first. Stew was like soup...just thicker. His claimed his full bowl and went to sit with his sisters.

The other two, looking hungrier and hungrier as Borra went to ladel some stew for himself. Finally the boy who had wanted porridge gave in. It was thick like porridge so it would have to do. Claiming his bowl he went to sit with the rest of his family...and then there was only one left. Race. The one who had wanted steak.

"Are you sure your not hungry?" Borra inquired as he scooped a spoonful into his mouth. It was missing a lot of things, pepper other spices...and was a bit bland for him but the mammu fat made it rich in a different way and probably saved it from being gruel. So it wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't his mothers cooking.

"I wanted mammu steak.." Race complained his eyes going to the pot of dwindling stew to his siblings who were now slurping up what they had.

"Well..there is mammy meat in it..why don't you give it a try?" Borra inquired gesturing to the empty bowl on the counter. Race looked annoyed at the fact he wasn't given what he had asked for, but hunger was winning out. Moving over he sulked as he picked up his bowl and handed it to Borra without looking him in the eyes.

Ladeling some into Race's bowl the boy moved to the table and joined his siblings who were almost done eating their first bowl. Dipping his spoon in...and looking surprised as he stuck it in his mouth. Soon the food was gone.

The boys asked for seconds, whilst the girls seemed happy with their one serving. When it was all said and done there was very little food left and the boys stuffed looked dazed and tired.

It was getting late, perhaps it was time to get them ready for bed?

The children seemed to all suffer from a round of yawning, though their eyes seemed to say that they were trying hard to stay awake. The heavy stew in the bellies was a hard thing to ignore though. Mira was already asleep where she sat, her mouth open slightly and her chest rising and falling in rhythm.

The oldest daughter didn't need to take any further queue than that as she lifted Mira from her seat and disappeared to the room to lay her to bed.

The other children were about to object outward about sleeping when there was a sound outside and the door opened to reveal the mother and father standing there. They pounded the snow from their boots and before they could completely enter the threshold the four children rushed to their parents and clung to whatever body part they could find.

"It's nice to see you all again." Ria laughed out with a hug for their children. "I see Borra survived the night." She patted them on the head and gave Borra a smile. "Alright you four. It's definitely off to bed with you now." She ushered the children out of sight to lay them down before Yabore turned to face Borra.

"Well, it didn't take nearly as long as we had thought. Though from the looks of it around here I'm assuming they ate." Yabore took Borra's hand and gave it a solid shake. "Looks to me like you're no worse for wear. We'll put the kids to bed, and you should be heading off too. Let me give you something for your time... and a little extra for the patience." Yabore reached into his pocket and pulled out a large amount of coins with a wink.
