Oh dear. Once again into territory she was not at all familiar with. Molly was nervous about trying to console on something she had no knowledge about…but leaving the poor boy alone to suffer just wasn’t an option either. She’d try her best, and that was the best she could do.

“Ah…” She murmured. “Did you say things you didn’t mean to…? Did you feel like it was her fault?” She was trying to understand the situation better.

"I meant every word." He assured darkly, pulling away as if no longer feeling worthy of Molly's love and affection. He wanted it, but he didn't deserve it.

"It was.. I mean... she was the problem.. I just... I didn't want her to be the problem.." Just saying that made him want to puke. It made him sick to his stomach. Eva was always a shining angel of perfection in his eyes. How could he think of her so grossly? "But it felt wrong to hear her blame herself.."

Molly startled a bit when Otto pulled away from her, and she looked at a loss at what to do, and especially at what to say. Yeah, Molly didn’t know what to say, and she felt awful for it. Regardless, she still reached out, and placed a hand on his shoulder. “…Sometimes, Otto…” Her voice was soft. “Sometimes things just…don’t work out I think…”

She paused, her brows furrowing. “Um…why did it feel wrong…if she was the problem?”

"Because... Eva's so nice. I don't think she meant to do anything wrong. She's always thinking of other people... She's always just... perfect." Perfection. Immaculate. Everything he wasn't. A star hat he had sullied with tears and blame.

"I wanted more from her, but I think she was just comfortable with the stagnant way our relationship was. She was fine with seeing me once in a blue moon, talking about nonsense till the next shift. It wasn't her fault. None of it as. I'm the one who wanted something to grow."

The trainee was silent as she listened to Otto, and she wished she sounded more sure as she spoke to him, but she didn’t. She also couldn’t stop what jumbled out. “No one is perfect, Otto.” Though after the words left her mouth, she looked guilty for saying it, but she also didn’t take it back.

Instead she let an awkward pause hang after it, and then squeezed his shoulder. “It’s not her fault…but it’s not yours either. I don’t think there’s anything wrong…with you wanting more…um…because isn’t a relationship about compromising and meeting half way? If the meeting is one sided, or not happening at all…I don’t think that’s good…” Her voice fell hushed now, and she shifted a bit.

Molly seemed uncertain. He was making her uncomfortable.

Otto rolled onto his side again, facing away from her as he pulled his covers up to his chin. "It's fine, Molly.. forget about it.."

Molly seemed dismayed when Otto pulled away from her and turned his back towards her.

“…N..no!” She squeaked. “It’s not fine, Otto!” She leaned over him, pressing her hands against her chest. “You can’t…it’s just…” She squirmed, uncomfortable still with trying to express how she was feeling. “You…can’t tell me it’s fine and to forget about it, when it’s not fine, and I won’t forget about it…Otto! I care!”

Otto curled into himself the more Molly pleaded, the comfort of his fortress of blankets failing to protect him from the discomfort of her pleas. "Just stop caring! There's plenty of people on this island who'd love you to help them out." People who would be receiving.

"You can't help me." No one could.

She was about to open her mouth to protest that she wasn’t going to just stop caring, but Otto’s last words rendered her into a quickly stunned silence. It was a sting. Molly stopped leaning over him and turned her back to him, immediately pressing her fingers to her lips.

He was probably right. She couldn’t help him. Why did she think she could? If she was going to be realistic, she couldn’t help anyone, and she didn’t think herself capable of helping anyone…but…

But…

There was always a but.

Molly hesitated, and then cautiously peeked over her shoulder at the boy, as if he might snap at her just for looking.

“But I can try.”

She wouldn't relent. Despite her uncertainty and skittishness, she still wanted to try.

Otto's eyes began to tear up again, upset that she wanted so badly to help, upset that he felt so trapped, upset with the world. Otto hid his face in his pillow, his throat becoming sore all of the sudden. He didn't know what to say. He didn't want to drive her away with hurtful words. He liked her too much. He'd already made Eva cry. He couldn't add to that list.

Otto didn’t say anything, and after a moment, Molly turned back towards her, lowering her hands onto the bed to brace herself. She peered down at his blanketed form, waiting for something, but when he didn’t do anything, she did. Molly leaned over and pulled off her boots, and then rolled herself onto the edge of Otto’s bed. She laid on her side, and scooted until she lightly felt Otto’s back against her. Molly then reached out and under Otto, and wrapped her arms around him in a hug.

There she stayed, and for the time being, didn’t say another thing.

Although Otto might not have known, and may not have asked if he did? This was probably all he really needed right now. Words didn't reach him. Reason meant nothing. This hug told him everything. She was there. She cared. He wasn't all alone. Otto quietly melted in her warmth and grasp, his eyes hidden so he could spill his tears in privacy. His body shuddered every now and then, holding back sobs that threatened to return. He was sad. Nothing could stop that but time, for now.

The blond remained this way for a long while. Eventually, he drifted into sleep. He hadn't planned to leave the bed that day anyway.

There Molly stayed, and just held him. At some point one of her hands moved so that she could lightly brush his hair, and at some points she hummed softly whenever he shuddered. The trainee ended up staying like that with him pretty much all day, even long after he went to sleep. At some point, though she’d get up, softly and quietly, and leave, though she’d be back soon to check up on him.

She still wasn’t sure how she’d help, but she’d keep trying, even if it was small things such as just being there.

Otto slept most of the day, only getting up once or twice for a drink or to go the bathroom. He'd needed it. The sleep, the company. It helped push him forward, even just a little.

He needed to allow himself the pleasure of someone's company. He needed to stop himself to thinking he had to punish himself with loneliness. Slowly, Molly just might help.
