"You're wish becomes my goal, Orah, " Björn pushed the cart to where they'd gotten it then followed her directions to the back inventory.

Know my mom better- That is a tough thing to approach on an occasion that is supposed to be light and happy. But sorrow itself is sometimes sweet as well. What is a gentle way? Picking up an open journal with writing already plain is more inviting to pen some of your own, ja? "I never knew my father. I was a surprise memento from a week holiday in Stavanger. But I have no complaints, except maybe that it would have been nice to have a brother or sister." The last words were laughed, like it was a common joke-ribbing between mother and son. "I am told to mind my own business of it. "

He left it open at that, so that Orah could choose to open up or not without him prying. It wasn't necessary to their friendship, after all, nor to their day. But sometimes just talking, and finding closeness from that with someone helped make a day-a week-a life a little better. Even one person just caring enough to open up first and stay open, leaving light from in a house streaming out into the open, windswept roads of life.

Orah found herself both grateful and anxious that the cold weather was thinning out her customers. One the one hand, it let her chat with him without interruption and let them get the work done faster, but on the other, it was a loss of money the family needed and took away a shield she would have normally hid behind. She wasn't used to dealing for extended periods with boys she found attractive or... men, she guessed would be a better term for Björn, who seemed so much more mature than she felt herself to be.

The teen followed him back, keeping one ear open for the bell above the door as she pushed the beaded curtain aside. Talking about her mom was a safe subject, for all the tragedy linked with it. There was sadness there, but a lot of love too, and fond memories.

"I'm sorry you haven't gotten to meet him. It would have been nice for you to know both sides of what made you, right?" Orah shifted around him as she made for the back door, swiping a paper tucked into the top of the pile of items to glance over the inventory that had been delivered. "My Da met Mum in Turkey on a business trip. Kind of like love at first sight, you know? They were at a high class party for his company that she got invited to because she was a model back then. She said she went to a lot of parties like that, but that one was the only one she could ever remember."

Her eyes lifting from the paper to seek out the shelves, a genuine smile crossed her face at the memory. "He took her home to Ireland with him and had me and my brother. Mum got sick though, about the time I turned four. It was cancer, you know? Matthew was two when she died, so he doesn't remember her, but I tend to remember little things, like her smile and the way she smelled, the way it felt when she held me on her lap."

Such bitter sweet memories... she lived with them every day. The last person she had told this story hadn't appreciated it much, but that was okay. It was just part of her, one of her building blocks.

"Its really nice for you that you get to know your Mum so much more, I bet she's a really great person." Orah said as she laid the sheet down on the counter, tapping her cheek in thought. "Um... the potting soil goes over there on the pallet. If you don't mind, the few bags that are left over there should go on top of the stack, rather than get new ones stacked on top of them. I'll move these plastic pots onto the shelves while you're doing that."

Björn was plainly neither anxious nor seemingly aware of any sort of awkwardness on the part of anyone finding him attractive- he took care of himself specifically to meet ideals of the human figure as put forward long before in statuary of bronze. He liked feeling fit and healthy, and he liked to be pleasing to others eyes or company- it was all natural, purposeful and hoped for.

"It would have been nice, but it hasn't detracted any. I guess I could have gone looking for him sometime- I've been to visit my family many times in Sweden and Norway, " he shrugged smiling over at her, "But I have not wanted for anything. Simple man, simple needs, ja? But...four...that was a long while ago. You have a good memory."

When she mentioned the inventory stocking specifically he nodded, grateful for the reminder. Doubly certain now, Orah had a good head on her shoulders, "Rotating the stock, ja, my mother has me do the same, so that you don't have stuff too old in the back or bottom and it sells first. I would have forgotten. "

Orah chuckled as she shrugged, gathering up a stack of light plastic posts in both arms.

"Its not as big of a deal with potting soil, but it dries out a lot if it sits too long and on some occasions it even grows mold, which we kind of don't want back here. It doesn't smell nearly as good as the flowers do, and sometimes I work back here when I'm doing arrangements." If he couldn't guess by the work bench set up complete with a pair of stools.

"It was a long time ago, but for me its just fond memories. Da named the store after her, so I've always felt like she was here watching over us."

The pots deposited by others of their kind, she went back to her sheet and ran her finger down it, reaching for a box of assorted spools of ribbon that also made its way onto the shelf.

"After the soil, these ceramic pots need to go on that shelf over there with the others." The dark haired teen said as she pointed from the boxes marked fragile to the shelves across the room. "They'll need to be taken out of the box so I can get at them easier, but I've got a box knife for the cardboard."

Leaning a hip against the workbench, Orah took a moment to rest, feeling her wrist ache. It was probably time for more meds, but it could wait a little bit.

"Gwen offered to come over tomorrow to help me out, but this is a huge help, Björn, you have no idea... I'm going to have to cook you the biggest meal ever or knit you a hat or SOMETHING." She laughed.

Björn shifted easily from simple, clearly related task to the next. The cermainc plainly made him a nervous, his brows lifting as he pulled up the first few in his wide paws. Do not drop or break things

This would take just a little longer for a task for being careful more than difficulty. Reaching shelves wasn't a problem, he was tall with long arms- playing with delicate things was like daring the fates to make him the bear in the ceramic pot shop. "Gwen? She is another friend? "

"I'm glad you have many hands to help make the load lighter. Is she a classmate? " It meant less worry in his day, or second guessing that maybe he should be rescheduling more around to offer more. He didn't mind to do so, there was joy in giving, but it was helpful to not have to reschedule too much with his responsibilities as an officer. No, no I will still worry.

No point pretending.

There was clear affection when Orah spoke of Gwen. The girl was one of her closest friends, and the word 'friend' even felt too mundane for how she felt for her and the boys. Comrade maybe described part of it... What did you call some you loved like a sister? Someone who had saved your life even as you had saved hers? She owed so much to them.

"Gwen is one of my very close friends, but she isn't a classmate. She goes to St. Mags, actually." Grabbing up a pen, Orah crossed things off on her sheet as she moved them, taking the lighter things and leaving the stuff for Bjorn that was too much for her. "She works at a flower shop too, but she's going to help me out in her free time. Mmmm... These rolls of wrapping are the last of it I think and they can be stood on end over there next to the shelf and then we're done !"

The teen clapped her hands together as she said it before folding the paper in half neatly and tucking it under a pair of scissors on the work bench. She'd stick it in with the paperwork later. While she was busy, a bell rang out in the main room and the teen jumped, scurrying out to see what customer had come in. From the back room, one could hear her saying something in greeting and a short exchange.

St. Mags....Orah does have a history of taking in questionable strays Björn recognized himself as part of that grouping, and couldn't help but wonder if 'Gwen' had just had an unfortunate misstep that had landed her in the school for bad girls. It was certainly possible that the girl was a rough character regardless, heart of gold or not.

The doubling up on florist work seemed mean- weren't there usually contract problems about non-competition with that sort of thing? Well, if Orah doesn't mind it and thinks its fine, then it probably is. She knows about floristing.

He looked over some a stack of pots as she went to answer the door and just paused for a moment, taking in the day. It was hard to remember every day having been so once in the ignorance of bliss- his biggest problems being exactly such things as trying not to break plates when packing boxes to move, getting lost in the city, or whether a friend was really as okay as they were letting on. It felt, all at one, too idyllic.

He finished off the pottery and moved to the rolls, making sure to lift with his knees and not his back. How did she do it normally? Wounded or not she wasn't that much stronger and certainly no taller. Plainly she was a wizard. Or had a dolly....or something. Tasks complete he crossed to the portal between the back and front, looking out unobtrusively (he hoped).
Better to be available to get her something if she needed it for the customer.

The man who had come in leaned on the counter with a smile, chatting with Orah as she set up his order. His manner was obviously flirtatious, but she was blissfully unaware, smiling back as she tucked a vase full of roses into a cardboard holder and pulled a plastic bag up around it. The bag was for protection against the cold, but the ribbon she tied around the top was purely decoration. When she was done, he thanked her with a promise to come back soon for more flowers. The teen laughed as she waved after him.

On his way out, the customer bumped shoulders with a young boy that was coming in. The was a murmured apology on the part of the customer, but the boy ignored it completely, a permanent scowl on his face as he shuffled towards the counter with his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his baggy black pants.

"Matthew!" Orah said in surprise, not expecting her brother to be home this time of day. He was always out with friends... had something happened. "What are you doing home so soon?"

"I'll watch the store. Go eat something." The dark haired boy grumped as he brushed past her and flopped down on her stool, whipping out his phone to start texting animatedly.

"But... I'm on the store today..."

"Just go!"

He barked when she tried to protest and Orah shuffled a little before she turned and obediently walked towards the back where Björn waited. She seemed startled to see him just behind the curtain, but her smile was easy when she greeted him.

"He never offers to watch the store..." She said quietly to him, glancing back at the fourteen year old with the pierced ears and tshirt covered with band logos. Shrugging, she turned to head for the stairs. "But I guess its nice of him to do... I'd have to skip lunch, or eat behind the counter normally. Come on, I'll make us something to eat."

Björn couldn't help but chortle at the 'srsbsns' young man hunched on the stool and throwing kindness at his sister like a wet towel. He assented with a single nod to Orah, turning to follow her after observing common courtesy -
"Hallo, Matthew. It is a pleasure to meet you."

It was called both genuinely pleasant and inevitably booming.

Following behind Orah, though, he offered, "You father does not mind he has so many pierce? He seems young to get them without parent permission they ask at the booths. They look cool, though. When I find a good place, I'd like a labret, myself. "

The young man jumped when a deep voice came booming out of the back room, juggling his phone so as not to drop it.

"Jesus christ, who the ******** are you?" He gasped out, earning him a disapproving sound from his sister.

"Matthew, this is my friend Björn. He came over to help me out at the shop today, moving inventory and things like that." Orah said as Matthew scowled and leaned back in his stool again, his face positively thunderous. Another strange guy in their home? Add that to the injuries that seemed to pop up with very suspicious explanations and the teen was very not happy. He kept up his glaring as the pair went up stairs, mumbling something to himself under his breath.

On her way up, Orah shrugged lightly, wincing. "Da does mind the piercings, but after the first time Matthew pierced himself, he realized he was going to do it whether Da wanted him to not. He figured it was safer to just give permission and take him to a professional rather than risk something worse." Her boots thumped the stairs as she made her way up, her good hand on the railing.

"A labret? That's the one through the bottom lip, right?" She tilted her head as she thought about it, her cheeks turning pink before she laughed and pushed the door open to the apartment upstairs. "I think you'd look great with one. Would you wear just a stud, or a ring? I'm... sort of scared of getting anything like that, myself."

"That is not so kind of your brother, " Björn heaved on a sigh. It wasn't by any means unusual behavior, though. He'd never understood the need for most youths to rebel so destructively against the authority of their parents. Anna had always had a wise perspective and was always helpful about offering him ideas of how he should be acting or deciding on things. She'd given him his leash to learn, certainly, and had also made it very clear when and why in the few instances that he was to obey without question. He'd liked the authority, and the growth of his responsibilities he'd been given had made him proud. It had meant as the years passed she'd trusted him more and more to be responsible for himself and had made her proud. Hopefully Matthew wouldn't go so far with it as to end himself up needing to enroll at Hillworth.

"Some must fall a few times when trying their wings, I guess."

"Ja, a labret is the one that goes here, " he touched the dip between his lower lip and goatee with his thumb. "Just a stud, ha. A ring would look strange there. "

"Piercings can be very nice accents on some faces, but they're not really necessary. I don't think it is a think about bravery- some faces are beautiful enough in their own right. Sometimes its just an interesting adornment. It's just my opinion, " He ventured gently, "But with your dark skin, and cute nose, an ala stud, just gold, could be fun. I don't think it would add anything that isn't already there, but it would just be a fun catch to the eye. "

"Not that I'm smart about fashion, believe me, " he laughed.

Orah shrugged gently as she made her way into the kitchen, tugging open the fridge.

"I try as much as I can, but I can't seem to do anything to help him... I can only hope he finds whatever he's looking for without doing something he'll regret." She said as she pulled out a large bowl. Plates were next, set on the counter that separated the kitchen from the living room next to the bowl, followed by forks and a serving spoon.

Setting down the silverware, Orah felt herself blushing yet again when he mentioned a nose ring for her. Brown eyes wide, she self-consciously touched the side of her nose and lifted her shoulders in a shrug.

"I think a piercing like that is pretty common in Indian culture... some jewelry uses it. I'll... I'll have to think about it, if you're sure it wouldn't look silly on me... Sometimes I don't think I'm all that smart about fashion either." Laughing, she pulled the lid off the huge bowl and stuck the spoon into it. It was a good chance to change the subject, so she did.

"This is Tabouli, made with Quinoa. I found the recipe online and decided to try it, though I did add some things. Would you like chicken, turkey, or roast beef with yours?"

The food in question was an herb salad, made with some kind of seed and tomato. There was fresh spinach in it too, and cucumbers.

He'd actually never heard the name of that stuff pronounced before, so it was actually a surprise to hear it as KEEN-wah instead of what was in his head - kwin-oh. "There's some cardboard burgers they make out of that in the frozen aisle at the co-op. So that's how its supposed to be pronounced."

Since he didn't watch much TV, he'd missed the recent NFL commercials highlighting the exact predicament, though mispronouncing it as kwee-noh.

Actually, there were a lot of gross, odd everything not-meat at the DC Co-op. He wasn't sure why he bothered to stay half vegetarian, other than it had become habit, but doing so was easier with access to the selection that came with a membership at the place. "Chicken is fine. Is it an Indian recipe?"

Bluefire Dragonz
PostPosted: Mon Dec 23, 2013 7:51 pm

Orah pulled a bag out of the fridge that had chunks of cooked chicken in it, which she dumped into a bowl from the cupboard. Another spoon went into that, and she set on the counter where Björn could reach it.

"That should be lemon herb chicken. If you'd like it warm, I can heat it up for you. One of the nice things about this recipe is that I can eat it too and its easy to make ahead of time." Spooning some of the salad onto the plates, she pushed his towards him and leaned on the counter, braced on her elbows.

"I, um... I don't actually know if its Indian. I just typed in healthy lunch into the search box on the recipe site and that's one of the ones that came up. I'm not a trained cook or anything, but its nice to try things, and I've been cooking for my family for years now. My dad was never very good at it... I sort of had to learn so I could eat good food." She laughed. "Didn't you say your mom cooked, before? You're probably used to food that's better than my simple cooking."

"Salad is cold, so the chicken is cold, ja? It will heat fine in the belly, " he nodded gratefully over the meal. "Thank you for this. Its a lot not to have to cook for myself after a few months. Anna does sneak into my apartment and leave meals for me to find- I think also to check out my fridge and if I'm eating right. But it isn't so often."

"Yes, she is a chef. In New York, " it was strange not to say back home, but a few years in Destiny City had usurped the title, "She worked at a restaurant and earned some stars. Some fancy stars, I don't remember the name. "

"When we moved here, she wanted to try something new, so she opened a crazy cupcake place. She makes strange brownies and pastries there, too. So if you ever need baked goods, I can hook you up. She makes a whole selection of ones for people who won't eat some things like vegetarian, vegan...the fish one...there's the one about no gluten, too."

But that wasn't who's food he was eating, "I have lived off my own cookie for a bit now. And before that was school lunches at Hillworth. I'm sure it is divine. "

And he wasn't going to waste more time debating that. The best proof of a good meal was leaving none on the plate.
