It wasn't enough. Jude's reasons left her lacking, because they didn't explain what he was doing about it, now. And they didn't help her explain to herself what she was doing, either. He could see the disappointment in her face, and she puckered her lips to brush the moisture around on them while trying to figure out how to word her questions better. "I don't have anyone to protect. You know me, Jude." She pouted firmly. "And I'm not hiding, either. I joined the Hunters because there was nothing to lose. It was food. It was shelter. It was a job. It was real pay. And it meant I would cease to exist." That was the part she'd liked most, when Simon came to collect her. He had a no nonsense attitude when he'd told her to get up out of the tiny apartment she shared with a man who'd never come back. It was hard to leave free lodging, but he'd made an offer she could not refuse. The fact that she would be in physical danger didn't click until her very first mission. The day Jude saw her fears exposed for just a minute, the mask of sarcasm disappearing in the dark. "I signed up because this life - and even now I say it - is an upgrade from the one I was living. They made the girl I was cease to exist. And that's the only promise they had to make for me. I'd do whatever they want, if I was given another chance." But so far, her second chance wasn't very productive. "I just want to know what they really want from us. Is it to die? Like soldiers? If we're soldiers, just say so, you know? There's no shame in that. But it always seems like the program tries to make you think you're more. They give you this partner, and now power, and tell you.. nothing about what you're supposed to be doing with it." Thaw's warning grumble warmed her mind. It felt dangerous, talking like that.

And yet there was no better person to talk like that to because Jude just gave her a nonjudgmental stare - possibly because he saw his own worries and thoughts in her face. There were many things Jude was but he certainly wouldn't blow the whistle on a fellow comrade in doubts. Jude did shift in his seat to see if anyone seemed to be listening in, but even that couldn't be an absolute.
Eyes and ears were always everywhere.
"Better reasons than myself I guess. Stronger reasons than me. I am more of the naughty child that did something wrong and doesn't want mommy to know about it...So I let mommy think that I am dead or otherwise gone," there was a bit of a strain to his voice as he said this - a hidden regret of sorts, but he didn't go into further detail about it.
Jude took in a deep breath and then exhaled as if to wash away his own secrets into hidden corners that not even Maebe could ferret them out anymore, "We do our jobs knowing that we could die. We do our jobs because we have no way to really back out of this. It isn't like the army where we sign up for a year or more and then we are done, so in a sense we aren't soldiers. Soldiers get freedom after a time unless they are career soldiers."
Yet, he wouldn't refer to himself or others as slaves or even sacrifices.
"The difference between those that die on the field and those that survive are ... Whether or not everyone does their job right or not. If you do your job right? You protect someone from getting majorly harmed. If I do my job right? I know how to get information on a target. If someone on Sun does their job right? They break down a threat and so on..." Jude shrugged a shoulder indifferently. "Some of us depend on others more and some of us depend on others less. It depends on you."

Maebe was tempted to stop him in the middle of his speech to ask him what the hell doing their job meant.. but he explained it in ways that reminded her she'd already known that. She just never realized how simple it really was. Or how much she did not want to be the one defending anyone's back, anymore. "What division are you in, again?" She whispered quietly. "The one where getting information is your job. How do you do that? Where is all the information?"

"I am in Death. As for how you get information? You go to the library, you learn on the field by going to ... that place and watching the things there interact. There is information everywhere if you look for it, really. You just have to be determined to get at it." Jude raised an eyebrow, "Why do you ask?"
He wasn't sure why there was a sudden interest in his division.

That didn't sound like the kind of information she was looking for. Anything in a book or computer wouldn't be secretive enough to have kept from her, and she'd done no learning on the field last time she was there. She wanted to be prepared, next time. "Because I don't think I'm a good fit. In Moon, I mean." She relaxed back onto the cushions. "Do you?"

He wasn't sure what answer she was seeking from him on that end. It wasn't like Jude was the best Death Hunter around - he was barely a model Hunter in general. He didn't love his job and he certainly didn't breathe it either.
Jude simply did this because that was all he knew for now.
"You certainly don't seem the type that would want to defend anyone, no offense meant. I mean it isn't like changing divisions is an uncommon thing around here," He said thoughtfully.
Some changed willingly and some changed against their will.

"No offense taken." She quipped out quickly, with a grin. Jude knew well enough how true, and unoffensive, that statement was. She wanted nothing to do with protecting anyone - Taym was a fluke, and yet she still didn't regret trying to keep him safe. She just regretted not knowing enough to safely manage to do so without risking personal injury so openly. "I don't think I belong here, either. But I don't know what that even means. You said Death are information getters. Does that mean they go into a fight knowing more than the rest of us? And Sun, what do they get that's so special? And Mist? And - I just feel very.." She chuckled at the irony of what she was about to say, considering the conversation. "Uninformed."

"Half the time I don't know what the ******** is going on and I am as blind as the rest of you all," He said dryly staring down at his lap for a long moment. "Caelius would tell us how worthless the lot of us were rather than tell us what to go on. For him everything is obvious it seems. You find the information one way or the other or we are just set with the task of observing everything. In a sense Death is all about watching, learning, and finding. If you do not know something? You find a way to find out more about it. Ask others, read, observe, learn and then when you are done with that? You look for more information. If you don't know something? You keep looking for the answer to it until you find it. It isn't like we are some group of mystics."
Jude could observe but half the time it seemed he observed something that wasn't meant to be observed.
Jude pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed lightly, "But I guess Sun are the muscle of the operation, they get to go out there and pretty much fight as far as I noticed and Mist are jack of trade sorts. They fill in what the rest of us lack or miss. Then there is Life ... I they make sure we stay healthy or turn others into guinea pigs. Depending who you ask," he murmured glumly.

She considered all of his more experienced revelations on the divisions carefully, before speaking again. This time, she just sounded curious. The anxiety had left her voice. "Do you have to be in Death, to look for answers like that? I mean, as your job." She still wanted to get paid, at the end of the day.

He let out a small laugh, "I suppose anyone can look for information. Just Death get the technology and learn the abilities to do so a lot better." Jude shrugged his shoulders. "Also not sure if it'd be smiled on if you did the job of someone actually in the division. Good way to get your a** kicked if you step on someone's toes."
Jude wasn't sure she'd get paid for it or not but she knew that there would be a lot of insults flung around if a Moon did the job of someone in the Death Division.

Just Death get the technology and learn the abilities to do so a lot better.Maebe's heart felt like it had leapt into her throat. She settled down, falling quiet before nodding distractedly. "Thanks, Jude." She murmured, her eyes fluttering closed. "For everything. Being here, answering my questions, and just.. everything." She wiggled her fingers, a weak movement that was trying to get him to give him hers. Her eyes opened again as she did so, and looked over at him fondly. "You're a good guy. As usual. Ariane's lucky to have you."

Jude flushed a little and looked a little embarrassed for once, "Wasn't a big deal," he said a little evasively. It seemed that he didn't get praise too often from most people unless it was making fun of how he took care of his hair or something else that was silly.
The wiggling of fingertips got his attention and for a moment there seemed to be a small inner debate as he tried to figure out what that meant before he reached over and held onto her hand. "I'm just...looking out for you I guess. I dunno why, you're a pain in the a**," he said with a hint of teasing edging into his voice.

"Ain't that the truth." Maebe purred proudly. She'd never been prouder to be a pain in the a** - hearing it coming from Jude made her beam with delight. "And apparently, you like pains in the a**." She would have made a very inappropriate joke right there, but her fingers curled around his and her eyes fluttered closed. The medicines were finally kicking in, slowing her wit down to a sluggish crawl. "Butt sex." She muttered out sleepily after a minute of silence." Pales writing this with my dad behind me was a hoot

He just quietly held onto her hand and let her hold onto his, "It is my lot in life, I guess," Jude uttered in response to his liking pains in the asses. As her eyes closed he didn't move to get up and walk away, even when she nonsensically uttered the word 'butt sex'.
"Just get some rest, Mae." Jude said dryly and rubbed the back of her hand with a single thumb.
