“ When I visit here, sometimes I see flashbacks, fragmented memories of my life before. I’ve remembered a couple of different things: being Sheriff, how visitors normally stayed in town, and the large, annual festival open for anyone that wanted to come.” She smiled at that fragment of memory. “ There were so many visitors that there were people camped out in the open as far as the eye could see.”

“ A lot of visitors couldn’t handle our spicier foods, and I doubt there were any off-worlders that could handle my prize peppers. One of the most resilient off-worlders I remember was still banging her head on a table after eating a Pomona Fire Pepper.”

An idea struck Pomona, a little twinkle in her eye.

“ I could get you one, if you want. There’s still a bush of Fire Peppers growing in the Manor’s courtyard.”

Bjorn was a very strong looking guy, powerfully built, but physical strength did not correlate to spice tolerance. In the past Pomona may not have been particularly beautiful (though she hadn’t had a beard, and wasn’t aware Bjorn thought she had), or graceful, or good at fighting, but she had had one claim to fame: she could eat spicy peppers that made seasoned warriors cry.

Pity the battle of order versus chaos couldn’t be determined through a pepper-eating contest.

"How did people travel to your planet? Did the Sheriff have to act as bus service ? " He was happy to have been brought by her, but it seemed like it would be a lot of work for one person to have to travel and phone-teleporting tens, let alone hundreds, of people want to visit. "You wouldn't get much sheriffing done-"

He gave Pomona n very old fashion look. Why she was advertising someone banging their head off of a table as a good time that he might want to try, he wasn't sure. It didn't sound like a very good time, and there didn't look to be a table nearby to make use of in the case that he should want one for just such a purpose. "It isn't the same as you used to blow up that giant alligator beast, I hope. "

Honestly the thought was a little alarming. Does she know that I'm a lieutenant? How did she find out? Or does she just want to blow me up because I met her? Obsidian warned a long time ago the senshi could or would harm their pet allies ...did I displease her somehow?

" I don't want to be blown up. " He didn't step back from her. There was no point in that since he was on her planet and there wasn't really any place to run if she decided she wanted to try to kill him. Did his own transformation work so far from Earth? He had no idea at all, and really didn't want to have to try it. Lady Pomona had saved his life once, and fighting her was far from the top of his list of things he wanted to ever do.

“ You know, I’m not sure. I don’t actually remember how off-worlders got here to visit. I haven’t seen any spaceships or giant landing pads or anything.”

Pomona looked stumped. She’d always just assumed spaceships were used because yes, she liked Star Trek and Star Wars, but now that she thought about it, the question was going to bug her. At least, it bugged her until Bjorn’s next question, which made her gape.

“ What? No, no, no, you’re not explode. Good grief, what makes you think I’d do that?” The redhead seemed at a loss of words at the idea, until the light bulb visibly turned on for her. “ Oh, wait, those peppers that exploded the monster? Those weren’t real peppers, they were like… little balls of magic. They look like peppers, but they’re not. They’re not meant to be eaten, and even if a human ate one, I don’t think they’d blow up. It seems to affect youmas – er, mosters – worse than people.”

She made an exploding gesture with her hands, then shook her head.

“ Fire Peppers are real peppers. They’re edible, technically, but very, very spicy; spicier than any Earth pepper, I think. They’re not so bad if you take the seeds out. Regardless, they won’t kill you. I’ve eaten them, and so has a masochistic acquaintance of mine, and we’re still alive.”

Björn shifted his weight, quirking his head down at the smaller woman, "My mother is a chef, so I have heard of very hot peppers. And you say these are worse than those? "

"I mean, I do not mind the idea of trying one...trying anything from a different planet entirely..." he looked up and around at the little town remains, his voice trailing off a little, "It is nice that something still lives here and keeps the memories planted in the soil by a people. Something they found important survived them. "

"It seems like it would be insulting not to," he admitted, but his brow furrowed like he expected that this was going to be exceptionally painful. He wasn't the sort that went around wing and chili joints ordering the hottest thing on the menu to get his name on the wall. He liked food a lot, but that was because he could taste it. He remembered his mother trying out habanero popper Hors d'oeuvres out on him a handful of years before, and the hour spent drooling like mastiff over the bathroom sink afterwords.

This wasn't going to be very dignified. He had a feeling, deep down, that was probably the point. The strongman girded himself- if there was anything he was alive for, it was bringing a smile and pleasing the whims of such jewels as Pomona or his Lord.

“ Yes, I’m fortunate in that regard. No people, no large animals – heck, not really sure if there are any animals – but there’s plants, and buildings.”

Pomona could’ve sworn she’d seen animals once, but she was also poisoned, fevered, and hallucinating at the time, so it wasn’t exactly a reliable memory. The buildings and plants though, they were very real, and she was glad that they still stood.

“ It’s okay, it’s not rude to decline. I can hardly expect everyone to want to try super-hot peppers! It’s just an offer. I can pick and deseed some for you to take home instead. I’ve got, like, a magical resilience to spicy stuff or something, so I can handle them easily.”

Pomona waved to a fairly wide, weed-strewn cobblestone road leading away from the center of the town.

“ That’s the way to the royal manor. As far as I know, the Fire Peppers were grown there exclusively; only place I’ve found them, anyway.”

"Are there only bugs, then, to help the plants make more plants? Or maybe just wind?" He started on the cobblestone that she had indicated, "I will try one if you spare one. Have you tried cooking with them yourself? Like those appetizers made with cream cheese?"

"I've you're immune to eating hot food, you should use that to get some free dinners around the city."

" I thought I saw bees once, and worms, but I was ill at the time, feverish and hallucinating thanks to the water, so I can't be certain if they were real. Maybe it is wind? I've seen pollen dust on occasion, but I figured it was just Spring or whatever."

" Oh yes, I've cooked with them." She said, nodding at his question. " I've made poppers and cornbread and nachos. The nachos went badly though. I didn't get all the seeds out, and that's when I discovered that my resilience to spiciness only works in my magical form. My brother snagged some too before I could warn him. There was much foul language used that night."

" You know, I've tried growing them at home, but they didn't come out right. Not as hot or brightly colored. I'm only an amateur gardener though, so I don't know why. Speaking of, what do you do for fun?"

He'd never even thought of someone bringing non-earth seeds to earth to try to grow them. His eyes were round-wide at the idea, wondering if it were good or bad, or what could even happen of that. There'd been such troubles of other invasive species- plant or animal. Those species were all Earthborn, though. He hoped it wouldn't cause problems.

She must have some idea of whether it was safe or not, better than his own, being as high ranked a lady as she was? Surely? The worry of it didn't easily fade, though. It was as perfect an example of water-under-the-bridge as he could come to. She'd even given her brother alien food, and that guy had been safe...it couldn't be fatal.

He'd probably end up wishing it was, if other too-hot food was any experience. "I've not gardened."

Björn picked at his fitted, more sweaty than it had been, branded shirt, "I work out. For fun. "

"And I like to eat?"

Very exciting past times. But she asked!
"Studying an alien world seems like it would take more time than a hobby?"

Considering Bjorn's size - not just height, but general, well, muscley-ness - she figured working out would be an answer. And eating, well, eating made sense.

" Yeah, eating is good. I imagine I don't eat nearly as much as what you eat, but I can usually finish any pasta is put in front of me."

A stone building looking like an odd mix of Spanish and English lay ahead, empty windows looking out over the broad lawn-like area they'd just entered. It was certainly no castle, and while sizable, it was not large enough to fit in any neighborhood of Earth's rich and famous.

" Well, that's the Royal Manor. Some other Senshi had actual castles on their planets, but this is as close as you get here. I think it fits. And yes, exploring is pretty time-consuming, mostly because I can't take an extended trip here; last time I did didn't end too well."

Björn marveled at the ruins even if they were palatial. There were the plain signs of hands, lives, histories in such stones. There was a culture that had been there, foreign from the two that stood now and took it in- it was humbling.

He nodded at the pasta love. It was a great way to get calories, and there were lots of options for add-ins or add-ons to make it different enough to eat it lots of times a week. "There's some good pasta in Destiny City."

Hearing her mention a limitation, he couldn't have denied curiosity even if he wanted to, "Something keeps you from just camping? It is hot, but not worse than visiting someplace like Arizona or tropical island? There are hot weather camp things?"

" There is indeed. There's even a handful that do good, real lasagna; those are my favorites."

" Space travel has some restrictions. I can only bring what I can carry. I can't bring a bike, so I have to walk wherever I want to go, and I'd have to be able to carry enough food and water to get there. I'd also need a change of clothes, tennis shoes, and sunscreen. So a day trip, or maybe a night or two is fine, but longer than that gets problematic."

Pomona carefully tugged at one of the handles on the wooden double-door entrance, pulling it open to the entrance way.

" The peppers are in the middle courtyard. We'll stop by the kitchen on the way."

The strongman patted her bicep when the door was opened, "You could carry a bike with guns like these? They are not so heavy as me. Or we need to feed you much more lasagna so you can."

He edged in through the door, following her lead while trying to keep an eye on not getting himself stuck places that weren't big enough for his circumference. A garden indoors? It felt expensive to have it that way, even if it wasn't a palace. Courtyards seemed well-to-do to his apartment-living life of eighteen years. "There is still a kitchen? Does it work? Was there electricity here?"

Pomona nodded, “ Yes, a lot more lasagna. I’ve got a strength boost while magical-y, but even with it I haven’t figure out how to bring a bike; backpack yes, bike no.”

“ I don’t think there was ever electricity. Or if there was, there wasn’t air-conditioning. I do know that’s why most Pomonians built their houses into the ground or covered them with dirt; it kept them cooler.”

Entering the kitchen, there was an odd mix of things left behind, and things obviously missing. There was a large wooden table, and lot of shelves, a couple of plain, chipped plates and partially-rotten baskets, but otherwise the room was empty. There was a large hearth, but was bare of any cooking utensils and had ivy growing out the mouth. There was what had once been some sort of oven, but the mouth and top vent had collapsed, leaving debris scattered around. Other things were missing entirely, leaving only gaps in the room or indents in the floor.

“ See for yourself. With time, money, tools, and skill it could probably be made functional again, but where does one hire a contractor to work on another planet?”

The red-head walked around, obviously looking for something. She found what was once either a sheet or tablecloth, and carefully picked the dusty thing up.

“ Sunshield for later.” She said, in case Bjorn was curious.

"Wood? Gas? " He carefully stepped around the rubble to look around the little kitchen. "Or something else? I guess on other places maybe they have other ways to maka stove work. ....there's so much preserved, but so much missing. Do you know what happened? Or when?"

"I have seen some old places in Europe. I never understood what the difference for science was in why some looked like they could be lived in today and others that were younger had nothing left but rocks. "

When she talked about contractors or that sort of work, he lifted a hand like it was a class, "I don't know a whole lot, but I'd be willing to help. I know how to do some things. A lot of old stuff like that have old recipes in books- how to cut hedges, lay walls without mortar, mix plaster with horse hair... I'm not so good for finding out which thing you need for these. But if you decided what sorts of stuff you wanted, I could look for the how-tos in some of the old yearly magazines that the library has. "

Sunshield...
It was already so hot the air felt like they had to chew it to breath it. It was going to get more intense?
