Lance snorted. "If you think this is intimidating... I should show you Eunaudi's stuff... Lets try this though." Flipping the paper over, Lance drew out the Piano staff with out notes. "Okay... This is a staff. Simple right? He drew out a symbol on the top part. "This is your Treble Clef. Or G Clef." He said. "It's called a G cleft because the bottom part circles around the G Key." He drew another circled on the line to represent G. "And That G is going to be this key." He added tapping the corresponding key.

Ali did not like feeling lost, but right now, that was what he was. So he paid attention, leaning over and watching as Lance drew and explained. He nodded along. "Okay, and the other notes follow up and down around that one," he said. That made sense!

"Mhmm." He drew a circle in between both staffs and slashed a line between it. "And this is Middle C. So remember how I said anything above Middle C gets higher? Those notes will be played on the Treble cleft. It also means that any of these notes will be played with your right hand. And, this kinda only applies to Chorus class, but when girls sing, they sing to the this one. Guys will sing on the Bass Clef. Or F clef."
He drew out the symbol for the Bass Clef. "Same concept applies. This line here," He said pointing to the one that ran between the two dots. "Is the F Key. These notes will be lower and played with the left hand."

"Okay, so," he placed his hands on either side of Middle C, "the upper staff, you play with your right hand and it goes around this," he tapped the G Lance had indicated before, "and the lower staff you play with your left hand and reads around this one," he tapped the F. "Seems easy nough," at least as far as reading the music went.

"Right. Alright. Now remember sharps and flats? Those are indicated like this." He drew the symbol representing each. "Most times, they will be over by the clef. And then, whatever note they sit on, are either flat or sharp. Unless its a white key. So that will have a different symbol all together." He drew that too. "Other times you will see then by the note. In that case its just that note thats sharp or flat.

Ali nodded. "Okay...so the sharps or flats by the clef mean that every time that note comes up it's sharp or flat, but if it's just by the note it's only that one time. I...think I understand?" This was a bit much for him, all the first time he was sitting down by the piano, but he wanted to learn badly.

"That's right. You're learning quick." Lance drew out the rest of the notes on the Treble clef, and wrote the note letter down next to it. "Alright babe. Here's a little trick to remembering where the notes are. " He pointed to four different notes. "These notes, the ones without the lines on them, are F, A, C, E."

Ali nodded slowly. "Oh, okay." That would definitely be helpful. He was slowly acquiring the whole reading-music thing. Maybe this wouldn't be embarrassing. Also... "You are endlessly patient and I very much appreciate that."

Lance shrugged. "Honestly, I hated learning the piano. I thought it was the most boring thing in the world." Jaysen quickly made him rethink his outlook on it. "Anyway. What next... Uh.. Oh right." On the sise of the paper he wrote out what looked like fractions? 4/4, 3/4/, 2/4, 2/2, 6/8. "Alright... These are your times. The most this means is how fast the song goes. Four-Four is most common. So you don't have to worry too much about them."

"Really? But you must've worked hard, to get as good as you are." Natural talent or no, Ali was always impressed with how well Lance played and with how hard he worked at it. "Alright, so time signatures indicate how fast the piece is. Is it...a smaller time signature means faster, or...?" Confusion abounds.

Lance nodded. "Mhmm." He drew other notes. "This is a whole, half, quarter, and eighth note. There are others but we'll just worry about these for now. These are just basically how long you hold the key down for. Quarter is one second, half is two, whole is four. Get it?"

"Okay, so it's basically...counts for how long you hold the note, that, uh, that makes sense. An eighth note would be...half a second, then?" He guessed. It made sense, considering the fractional divisions given so far.

"Mhmm. Sometimes though. You might see a little dot to the side of a note like this." Adding in the dot Lance continued. "This is just adds on half of the time to the note. So like if you see it next to the half note its the half note plus an quarter note."

Music was complicated. That was Ali's final decision. Not that a good mystery wasn't full of twists and turns, or theater didn't take a lot of work, but damn. "So...three counts instead of two, then?" He asked. At least it broke down neatly into small counts. That wasn't too bad.

"But that's if you see them by the side... Sometimes you can find the dots above the note like so." He drew out the said dot. "This makes the note Staccato. That means you don't hold it. It's a quick note." He tapped a note to illustrate it. "Most times... you wont find that in easy pieces."
