All that glitters...might be Christmas lights!
(Martin meets Marissa)
Martin:
Martin was so excited! It was his favorite time of year, or well one of them. The colors, the lights, the sounds, the snow, the smells! it was all too much for the excited Lilpup child to handle with ease. As a pokemon he'd been even more wired around the holidays, but now...he was chattering incessantly to the annoyance of his trainer turned unwilling parental figure. So to get the talkative boy out from under his and Benedict's feet so they could go over a case he had, he'd sent the boy and John out with some money to buy trinkets. Except Martin had run ahead and ditched the man utterly, and now...well now he wandered wide eyed and amazed!
Marissa:
Another child had left their home in search of trinkets, but with the inability to buy them, the girl wasn't sure what the point was. Marissa was sure all her torn jean jumper-pocket held was a half eaten cookie, and that wasn't worth anything to anyone, except herself. In which case, it was her lunch. One strap hung off of the girl's shoulder, the front had lost a button long ago. She wondered if she would ever learn to repair it. Maybe if she found a button, and bought a needle--huh. She pondered this, studying the window of a stop. All this red and green! It must have meant something! Was it a day to celebrate stop lights? She made her way past, nearly bumping into Martin. "Oh, I'm sorry!" She said.
Martin:
Martin had been staring in at a shop intently, nose pressed to the glass and his tail wagging as he stared at the various decorations in the window. The toy train, the mechanical...everything. It was the apology that tore his gaze away from the window, tongue lolling just slightly. "It's okay! You alright?" he started to sniff the air a moment curiously. Something smelled funny. What was that?
Marissa:
"I'm okay!" Missy assured him, glancing at the window he'd been studying so intently. Her eyes widened in wonder. "Oh, wow," she muttered. None of those things would fit into her pocket, she knew! Maybe there was something small, and just as valuable? She could sell it for food! She wasn't sure what Masamune would eat, but--something! "What's all this stuff for?" She asked. "Everything's all decorated. Why?"
Martin:
Martin canted his head to the side with a smile. "Christmas is in a few weeks! This is decorations to make everything all sparkly and magical." there was a firm nod of his head tail still wagging. "Don't you know what Christmas is?" how weird she didn't!
Marissa:
Marissa blinked. Christmas? She'd never heard of it! She wondered what it was, and why everything was made sparkly for it. She didn't like admitting that she didn't know something. She shook her head, "No. What is it? Everything is red and green--and silver." She wondered if the silver ornaments were worth anything.
Martin:
"There's also blue, and purple, and gold and a bunch of colors. The shops want people to come in and spend their money to buy gifts to put under the tree." they didn't have a tree yet, Peabody didn't like them but John always got some small dinky thing for them on Christmas Eve. So they would have one yet even if not the prettiest! He had a little money in his pocket that John had given him on top of what Peabody had given and he smiled. "C'mon lets go inside this place here." he sniffed at the air again, something smelled good there! Something here outside the toy store smelled stinky!
Marissa:
"Ooh. I don't have any money," Missy confessed, awkwardly. Shop people wanted money? "What tree?" She asked, curiously. She blinked at him. "Any tree? Will someone bring gifts to me, too?" She hoped so! Maybe she could sell them! "Why do people put gifts under trees? Aren't they worried they'll be stolen?" She followed Martin inside.
Martin:
"A Christmas tree. See this is a toy one here with toy presents under it. But people buy big ones and buy presents for each other and wrap them and stick them under the tree for Christmas morning to open. I don't know what for but it's fun." he usually got a chew bone though he didn't think that would work so well anymore. "I don't know do you have someone to buy you something?" he knew there was no 'Santa' or who ever that brought things. It was up to adults and other people.
Marissa:
"Huh. I've never even seen one," she marveled at the small tree, with the toy presents. She knew they wouldn't have a place to put a tree. It was a nice thought, though... "People are strange. Bringing trees into their houses? Silly. But the decorations are pretty. Masa might like them."
Martin:
"My trainer doesn't see a use for them and hates holidays. His partner likes them though and brings in a small tree eventually and put a present to my trainer, my friend and me under it...and eventually Peabody puts something he's had tucked away under as well." it was amusing to him really. Benedict was the same as Peabody, hating the holidays and all. Martin ducked inside the one shop finally and looked at stuff. Benedict and John had been teaching him things. Like how to read and he smiled. "I can buy you something if you want...but it has to be under five dollars. If its cheap enough I can even get you a candy cane if you want." why not?
Marissa:
Marissa didn't see how anyone could hate something so beautiful. The ornaments, how they sparkled. And the star on top of the tree in the window, it shone brightly. "Its very pretty," she said, "Christmas is." She hesitated at his offer, eyes widening. "Really?" She asked. Five dollars was a fortune! She could buy anything for five dollars! "Er. What's a candy cane?"
Martin:
Martin nodded and stepped inside and looked at all the small baubles and trinkets, the various toys and what not. “I’ll help you find something so you can have this, and a candycane.” He pointed to the red and white swirled confection sitting in a container where they would eventually have to pay. “It’s peppermint and good to eat.”
Marissa:
Marissa smiled at Martin gratefully. She had never met anyone so generous! "Thank you," she said. "Can I do something for you in return?" Maybe one day, she would be able to buy him something! "Its almost too pretty to eat," she observed, glancing at the candy canes. And it was large enough she would be able to share it with Masa!
Martin:
There was a bright smile on his face at her pleasure and his tail wagged as he bought the candy cane for her, and of all things handed her the change. There was a lot of change since it hadn’t cost much. “Yup! You can take this and use it on something you want okay?” he smiled at the girl happily. He was glad he’d made her smile!
Marissa:
Marissa stared at the money in her hand for a long moment, before moving to place a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you," she said again. "I've never seen so much money at the same time! You're so nice! Oh... I didn't get your name! Mine's Marissa." She was horrified by her lack of manners. This boy had been so kind to her, and she hadn't remembered to ask his name.
Martin:
He blinked at the kiss to his cheek, blushing some. Well that was new! His tail wagged again as he opened his mouth to give his name, only to have the shop door burst open and a breathless "Martin! There you are! I've been searching all over for you! Come along now, we're quite late getting home!" reaching him. A sheepish smile was given to her. "I'm Martin...and apparently I have to go. Oh! Don't forget your candy cane!" he thrust the bag that held it at her and smiled. "It was nice to meet you Marissa!"
