Why... why... Was he... not believing hard enough? What did he have to do to make it real? What-
He barely raised the daggers in time to fend off the blow as it made him stumble. He was glad Sherry wasn't going easy on him, but at this rate...
"N-nothing, keep going."

At least he was trying to defend now. It just didn't make sense. He'd wanted a spar. They both knew he was at a disadvantage with just the runics, but that hadn't stopped him from trying before. So what was holding him back now? "If you say so," she said, another attack coming in with her words. "But I want to know what's going on. You're not giving me your all." She didn't want to just sit here and wail on him. HP: 48/50 Target: Jake Damage: 5

With how sporadic his actions were, it was probably right for Sherry to worry, and he really should be trying harder, but perhaps it was BECAUSE he knew he had no chance of winning regardless that he didn't really bother. His goal wasn't to win, it was to bring Chester back, and right now, he was succeeding in neither.
Chester, dammit, I'm bearing my heart and soul, why don't you freaking RESPOND?! "I am!!" He lashed out, frustrated.

Sherry gave up a few steps, both in reaction to his attack and in surprise at his outburst.
She didn't say anything during her own attack, again more a reaction to his than anything. His mind hadn't been here, on the spar. She was still sure of that. But clearly now was not the time to ask about it.

He really shouldn't have been shouting at Sherry like that, especially since she was just concerned, but he was just so... so FRUSTRATED! He was trying, mentally screaming Chester's name to nearly the point of exhaustion.
He couldn't even think straight anymore, knowing that if he failed here, it may be too late. "WHY. WON'T. YOU.-" At this point, he was just relentlessly attacking, not even seeing Sherry anymore.

Giving up ground wasn't painful to her. She had no problem with that, especially not when he was actually attacking. Her problem was with the empty pit of worry in her gut opening up again. Jake's demeanor spoke volumes, even if it didn't answer her question. It only opened the floor up for more questions.
Sherry held those questions in. For now, she had her word to keep.
Her attack was aimed at an opening, a short jab aimed at his middle. She'd follow it up be stepping back more. Distance might be a good idea.

The attack had managed to bring him back to his senses, somewhat, and he shook his head. Why... why wasn't this working? Did Mark lie to him? Was he not trying hard enough? He swung at Sherry again, not as strong, just tired of everything.

Worry increased with each heartbeat. He'd asked her to attack. Told her to keep attacking. Why? It was obvious now that didn't want to stand around and be beaten to a pulp, so what was this?
She attacked again, not letting, not letting her concern get in the way this time. He'd asked for it, wanted her to. She trusted he had a reason for acting this way, and once those daggers were out of his hands she was going to hug him until he told her what it was.

With Sherry's last strike, he dropped the daggers, exhausted. "Why..." He buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged sigh.

Armagnac made her displeasure at being desummoned very known inside Sherry's head. Jake had asked for a spar, he'd asked to be attacked, and surely being unarmed did not null such requests. Certainly it only meant that Sherry was supposed to make to him bleed.
Too bad for Armagnac Sherry was rather good at ignoring such rants and suggestions.
"Jake," she said. Questions rolled around in her mind but she didn't know which one to ask. So she hugged him, just like she'd planned to.

He flinched slightly when he felt Sherry's arms wrap around him, and looked up slowly.
"Sherry, I'm sorry, I..." He cast his gaze at the daggers. "I'm... a failure."

Concern pushed most of the worry off her face, but the look of question in her eyes was still very much there. Those eyes didn't turn away from his face, and her hug didn't let up at all. A failure? Not..because of this spar, she hoped. They'd joked going into it that she was going to win, but only because they both knew runics were at a disadvantage.
"No," she said. There was more to this than just the spar. Memories or something. "No you're not. What is making you think that?"

"I... I couldn't summon Chester." Not even a whisper. He couldn't hear or feel anything different. He did everything Mark had told him to, so why... Was it... because he knew that it wouldn't work even if he tried? ... or was it because he doubted it would even work in the first place?

"Is that what you were trying to do?" Why...why hadn't she guessed that? She'd asked about Chester before he asked for a spar. She should have been able to figure out why. Hadn't he said he needed to train?
The hug grew tighter. "I wish you would have told me that's what you wanted to do." She'd been worried.
"Are you sure he's ready to come back?"

Though the hug was slightly comforting, it didn't take away the fact that he had failed. Was it... was it really impossible to summon Chester again? Was it because he took too long? Or did he... not want to come back?
"I didn't want you to go easy on me. This is... this is something I have to do myself."
... Not ready to come back? What did she mean? A sense of dread settled in his stomach. "Do you think... he has a new partner now?"
He had heard that if a hunter were to die, the weapon would be put to sleep until another hunter that was able to bond with it came along, but was it possible for it to bond with another whole the hunter was still alive?
N-no, he still had Chester's totem, and Mark had said he was fine. So... why...
