His mouth twisted into a wry smile. "The only things healthy about me are my personal hygiene and sense of adventure. But yes, there was a much larger nest of them we had to take care of." Great birthday party, really.

Jack was surprised at the offer, however, and it made him wary; anything generous always did. "A backrub and a watchdog all in one?" he mused, turning his head to give her an odd look (at least the light wasn't as bad anymore). "What do you want from me that would warrant such an offer?"

"All your money and hot sex," Chel said, rolling her eyes. She went to the door, flipping the switch next to it off. Luckily the light from the hallways still kept the room relatively well lit, but it was a lot easier on the lights.

She moved towards the back of the lab, sitting on the ground and patting her lap. "C'mon dude, I'm just being friendly. I think you're pretty cool and I want to be friends." Was that such a high price?

Geez what was it with the hunters around here. Everyone was always on their toes, always hating each other. She'd seen it at the Sun meeting with Rep and Jerry, found it in the lab aides any time she'd tried asking for directions. Now she was getting flack from another trainee. Harsh tones all around here at Deus.

"Cool", huh? Guess he wasn't the only one great at deluding himself.

In the new contrast of light and dark, the rings forming under his eyes and his naturally thin face gave Jack a hollow, skeletal look. Maybe he hadn't really needed to paint his face for Halloween after all. He gave Chel a curious stare for longer than most deemed polite before getting off the stool and following her to the back of the lab.

"Alright, then. Half an hour," he said, pausing when she pat her lap. R . . . ight. The darkness had doubled the weight of his exhaustion, so he didn't question it and settled onto the ground, letting his head gingerly lower onto the outer edge of her legs. "All I need is half an hour. An hour at most," he added, his eyes falling closed. "More than that and I'll be thrown off schedule."

If Chel had a tail, it would probably be wagging at Jack's acceptance. It was totally the tiniest step and she was actually kind of being used, but she would take it. In a place like Deus, she was quickly learning that the way to survive was with friends.

"Okay Jack ... whatever you say ..." Considering her was now laying on her instead of sitting up, it would've been awkward to give him a backrub. She'd expected him to sit in her lap, but c'est la vi. Instead she took to gently stroking his hair, quietly contemplating the mystery of how it stayed so bouncy and unruly.

She vaguely wondered if this crossed the boundaries Nevada had set. They'd agreed on on sexual with each other- did that include slightly friendly somewhat romantic things? ******** this was harder than she thought it'd be.

---

Having almost dozed off herself a few times to the rhythmic hum of the labs, Chel checked her phone to realize it'd been almost an hour and fifteen minutes. "Oh ******** oh ********- Yo Jack. Jack I ******** up dude, wake up!"

At first, nothing. Jack had fallen asleep within seconds of his request and stayed almost statue-esque throughout his doze. When he was roused a little after Chel's yelling, it was with a chorus of groggy noises and confused grumbling at the rude awakening. It took him a minute to recognize where he was and who he was with, and if it was possible he felt worse from the nap. Something was off.

". . . Chel, you ******** fell asleep, didn't you." Thus did Jack showcase the supernatural ability to go from scrunched sleepy eyes to a full on and very awake glare in seconds. "How long have we been out?"

"No! No!" Chel protested, waving her hands. "I swear it, seriously. I just lost track of time thinkin' 'bout stuff okay."

Could you blame a girl after being up all night? "Um ... 'bout an hour and a bit over," she said, wincing slightly. Oh god please don't hate her forever Jack.

If that was somehow supposed to be a better excuse, he wasn't impressed. Muttering a curse, he forced himself to sit up and winced at the stiffness in his body; apparently being on the floor for any stretch of time was enough to undo most of Chel's massage work. Jack rubbed at his eyes with a scowl and lumbered to his feet, forgetting how to walk for a second as he bumped into a lab table.

"One ******** job, Jesus . . ." He was almost territorial about his schedule once it was set in stone, and even a setback like this was enough to throw him into a small rage. Squinting, Jack fiddled with the switches until the lights came back on, remembering last second to close his eyes so he wasn't immediately blinded. "No coffee, no compensation for your time," he growled at her, as this was true punishment clearly. "You are going to sit here and do some of my God damn work. Maybe all won't be lost if I can catch up."

Unlike the hostilities some other hunters might've given Jack, Chel just shrugged and said, "Kay!"

One, it made sense really. She'd messed up so now she owed work. Made sense to her. And two, it meant more time with Jack. More friendship.

She moved to stand beside him at the lab table. "Where do we begin?"

He was almost bugged by how easily she took to it, but a worker who didn't complain was hard to come by. He'd take it. "I'm looking into Halloween geography that's been documented," Jack explained, gesturing to his work area prior to her arrival. "There are a few binders over there I scoured earlier. What I'm finding is that some people are not very organized. I need them cataloged by region to better absorb the information, preferably also in chronological order within each individual collection."

He didn't quite wait for a response, instead turning briskly to go make himself some coffee.

"You got it dude," Chel responded in a very Full House sort of way. The files were indeed very messy, thrown in a pile this way and that, but Chel had to wonder just who had messed it up. She wasn't pointing any fingers at Finn but she was kind of pointing that direction.

She hadn't gotten more than one or two files in when she said, "I like hangin' with you. You're surprisingly guarded. Much different from sir-flirts-a-lot I saw on the field." Chatty Kathy, that was Chel.

When Jack started making coffee, she couldn't help but make needy eyes at him. Pleeeease.

Having had Stormy as a girlfriend, he was just about immune to needy eyes from others; most lacked the special sparkle that involved him caring. "I don't ******** around if there's actual work to be done," was his simple explanation to the split personality as he turned the corner and let her be for a few minutes.

Fortunately it was a good bit of coffee time today, and look! The mug didn't have a tiny fissure he was unaware of until the drink ruined his coat! Glorious. But there was indeed only one mug of fresh dark brew in hand as he returned. "'Sir Flirts-a-lot'? Really?" he continued, as if there hadn't been a break in the conversation (or might break Chel's concentration). "That's rich coming from the chick who flirts with everything that has two legs."
PostPosted: Wed Nov 06, 2013 10:31 pm

"HA. Real bread winner I see," she jested, flipping the papers over. Chel might not have been a lifer, but she wasn't a wandering brash oaf like a lot of the others in her division. "Real cold of you on the coffee, man."

She picked up one stack and moved it to the side of the counter, clearing space for herself. "And hey- I never said it was a bad thing. Flirting's just compliments. I just like makin' people feel good- what's the problem there?"

"I explicitly stated you were getting no compensation," he retorted curtly. And then, as if to spite, he took a long draught of his coffee as he approached. At least she was good on her word and had a decent start.

But Jack was pretty sure at this point that she liked making a lot of people feel good, be it flirting or ********. He filed Chel's name under Booty Call for the moment and made no additional comment other than a wry smile to himself and a simple, "Sure."

Dragging a chair up, he settled in and plucked the first set of papers she'd finished, setting the coffee cup next to him as he scanned the first few lines. Jack was apparently expecting this process to be a quiet one.

"Yeah well I explicitly state that you're a d**k," Chel responded maturely, sticking out her tongue. It was all in good fun though. She liked dealing with these sour types. They were a challenge.

A few quiet moments and then. "So I just realized I don't know anything about you other than you're a handsome ********. What goes on at the casa de Jack?"

He could hear Lina's voice teasing him. Juan? Or would you prefer Juanito~?

"Jackass," he corrected Chel as a matter of factly, searching for a pen in his coat pocket. He then proceeded to underline a few key phrases on the document. "And beyond this?" he made a vague gesture around them. "Nothing much."

Maybe if Jack sounded as boring as possible, she'd stop talking.
