Charlotte hid a smile behind her notebook, so it sort of looked like she was just being a little shy about it all. Lance gave her an odd look, one eyebrow raised, but said nothing about it. "If you girls are done playing, we should get going." The tone was a little gruffer, more urgent. He headed into the portal first.
"One moment, please wait." the Moon assistant suddenly made a strange flailing gesture, and then proceeded to pull something her Fendi bag. It was a set of Runic bandages made from lace, infused with the usual Runes that glowed along the side. It looked expensive but she was handing them over already, a set to Heidi, and then Tuck, Evan, and Peyton respectively. "Come- come back safely!"
She would wait there until they arrived back in one piece (or not, really, this option was open for debate).
The other side of the portal was dark, a little too dark. Even Lance seemed caught off guard. The Mist assistant was already milling around, and finally at some point, came back with a series of flashlights, handing one to each person on the team. He frowned. "We were supposed to arrive at the safe zone, this is supposed to be the extraction zone but there is no one here, not even survivors. The power seems to be mostly busted. I don't know what happened to the last team, I'm going to check their equipment. I'll need your help finding them but stay together. Contact me on the headset if you need anything. This town is fairly small, maybe at the most a mile in radius, just make a quick five minute walk and head back here. Bring any survivors, human or other Hunters here. We can't afford anything else right now." There was no doubt what he meant by anything else. On his way to examine further discarded equipment at the base, he turned around. "Be quick."
The Mist assistant dismissed them then, leaving the open path, a singular open path, rocky, open for exploration. It was dark and foggy. There was an odd buzzing noise, but just barely, as if coming from very, very far away. OOC INVESTIGATING:- This is a search and rescue! You are trying to locate people and survivors! It is currently dark and foggy. You can only see a few feet in front of you, in the small radius your flashlight allows you to see. Something is buzzing in the background. Roll 1d100 to investigate around! Each player may roll ONCE and match your dice roll to the result below: Rolling under 20: You see lights flickering in the distance. Just two, then three, then four, and then nothing. As you wave your flashlight that direction, you see on the ground a series of footprints and a long trail of blood. Rolling 21 - 40: The buzzing gets a little louder. You turn your flashlight towards what you think is the source when you see a body hanging from a low tree branch - but as you look closely, there is nothing there. Rolling 41 - 60: You hear the slow shuffling of feet, around you, but no matter where you turn your flashlight you cannot see anything. Rolling 61 - 80: You hear a strange sound a wet squish squish squish coming from the distance. You swear you can hear strangled cries, someone dying, someone shouting for help, and you slowly realize the sound you are hearing is someone eating someone else. Rolling 81 - 100: You come across a single survivor! It is a small girl (or boy, your choice). S/he seems terrified to the point of being catatonic. S/he needs to be carried. There are bloodstains - not their own - all over their shirt and pants.

"Well, I couldn't let you have all the fun. Someone's got to keep you out of trouble," Evan replied as he took a headset from the Mist assist and secured it on. More than that, it would be nice to go out on a mission with friends. There was so much less guesswork to be done when you knew the people you were responsible for--the people who were responsible for you--and he had more of a vested interest in keeping them safe. Mostly, anyway. Evan knew even less now how Peyton would react, and he had little patience for wildcards, especially when so much of the rest of the mission was being made up as they went along. Maybe she would get eaten by a monster, or something. That might be okay. /Baiton. Heeheehee~/Evan hid a bark of laughter in a cough as he took the offered roll of bandages. "Thank you, Ma'am," he said to Charlotte, "I'll try to bring them back in one piece." After Evan stepped through the portal, he paused for a moment to let his eyes adjust to the darkness. He listened patiently to Lance's instructions as he turned his flashlight on and off a few times, just to make sure it worked. "Yes, Sir," he said as the Mist dismissed them. He made for the path, his steps growing quieter and more careful as he went, a reflection of the things he hadn't learned at Deus. Evan hadn't gone far before the glow from his flashlight revealed something more than ground and fog. He stopped short as the beam illuminated what appeared to be a pair of small, dirty feet. Gir whined in anticipation as Evan readied to summon him, just in case it was something other than--oh. It was just a kid. He couldn't eat it. How disappointing.Child or not, Evan still approached with caution, just in case it decided to sprout wings or fangs or claws. The kid--a little girl, by the looks of it--didn't even seem to notice him, even when he dropped to one knee to put himself at her eye level. Her gaze seemed empty, wide and terrified as she looked right through him. Upon closer inspection, he could see that her clothes were torn and bloodstained. "Miss?" Evan said quietly, waving a hand in front of her face. The little girl didn't acknowledge him at all. "Are you injured?" Still nothing, and Evan sighed as he carefully wrapped his arms around her before standing up. ******** monsters."Civilian located," he said into the headset. "May have injuries. Taking her back to the extraction point."

Peyton startled when Heidi volunteered to be her moon, and she gave the other girl wide eyes as she came over to link arms with her. There was a brief handful of seconds where she wasn't entirely sure what to do or say, then a smile slid over pale lips and she was squeezing the other girl's arm back fondly. "Boys vs. girls, huh? That hardly seems fair." The smile grew into a grin. "The poor boys don't stand a chance." The challenging grin was passed along to Tuck, even to Evan, before Lance was heading through the portal. "Time to go," she breathed out, half excited, half anxious. Then, before stepping through the portal herself, the dainty Sun pulled out her phone and sent a lightning quick text. rejam Text to Taym: We're leaving. Evan's here too. When she stepped through the portal everything was dark, a lot darker then she'd been expecting, and almost immediately she grabbed for the flashlight tucked at the small of her back. It wasn't much, but the oval of light it provided was better then nothing. The Mist Assistant's assessment of the situation wasn't a comforting one. It didn't sound like he knew what was going on, and that probably wasn't a good thing. But, Peyton was willing to hold onto optimism. They'd only just arrived, surely s**t wasn't going to hit the fan 10 steps past the portal. Surely.. Giving Heidi's arm a last squeeze she distangled herself from the other girl and headed into the dark. Slowly, carefully. She didn't expect to find anything, so when her flashlight picked up a doll on the path Peyton didn't think anything of it. Not until she'd swept that narrow beam further up, right into the startled, pale face of a child no more then five. "Holy s**t," she breathed out, nerves making her voice a little higher then the norm. "Sweetheart, you startled me." The little girl didn't say anything, She didn't even look as though she'd heard. It was worrying, and Peyton moved closer, kneeling down before the little girl. "Hey, it's okay. You're safe now." The poor thing was terrified. Her hand was cold when Peyton took it, and she frowned, squeezing tiny fingers in a reassuring manner before scooping her up into her arms and retracing her steps back the way she came. "I've got a survivor!"

There was something eerily familiar about the entire situation, and for a brief moment after stepping through the portal Tuck had to pause to clear his head. This was real, this was serious. There were lives at stake here - not just his or those of his comrades, but the lives of civilians. Before he moved forward, Tuck took a split second to send a worried glance in Heidi's direction. " Be careful." From that moment forward, he could not afford to remain focused on her welfare. Then again, it was easy to remind himself of that. Tuck really had no idea how things would play out if her life was put on the line. He didn't want to think about it, and so he focused on the task at hand. It was simpler, easier that way. Headset secured, Tuck exhaled and got down to business. It didn't take him long to come across a small, trembling child. She was covered in blood and seemed too shocked to cry out, but she allowed herself to be scooped up against Tuck's broad chest. "Civilian located. I can't tell if she's got any immediate injuries but she seems to be in shock. On my way back to the extraction point."

Heidi caught the look Tuck was giving her and grinned, blowing him a quick kiss before she gave her flashlight a playful twirl and then finally turned it on, following her friends. This was just like...a survival horror video game. In real life. It was okay. They'd be totally fine. The others found children and she actually sighed with relief. At least the children were..okay? Maybe? She shined her light on the first child Evan had found, and then Peyton's, and then finally Tuck and the little girl he had scooped up. All three of them were covered in blood, no wonder they were in shock! What had they witnessed? "Poor things," she said quietly with a small frown, but she tensed up when she heard another sound. Heidi didn't move, she stared straight ahead and just listened. It was like listening for the soft rustle of leaves as a deer or a pheasant walked through the brush. Don't move, listen. But the others were talking, telling Lance and Charlotte they were coming back. Wordlessly, Heidi held her flashlight between her teeth and summoned Matilda, string pulled silently and a glowing white arrow formed and ready. She turned on her heel, bow ready but pointed at the ground so as not to accidentally hit her teammates or a civilian. She turned her head, shining the flashlight to find something, anything. Nothing. She just heard shuffling. Someone nearby was either hurt..or... Tread carefully, m'lady..She stepped back toward the others. She wanted to tell them to be careful but..well...she couldn't really.

"Three? Nice work, get back here as fast as you can," Lance advised over their runic headsets. "The Fear scanner's starting to pick up activity just as the fog's starting to get thicker. Hurry back here, yeah? Keep your eyes ope-"
A burst of static cut the Mist Assistant off. Around the trainees the fog swelled into a milky white, blocking them in. The Fear Scanner began to blip with increased frequency and volume as phantasmic hands with things that barely registered as "fingers" reached out towards the group. There isn't much room to move, and combat while holding civilians is impossible. Putting them down is also inadvisable, not with the thin layer of fog that has covered the trainee's feet.
The OOC YOU ARE NOW SURROUNDEDThere's nothing solid to hit, and there are hands reaching out to you and your group! Evan, Peyton, Tuck - please roll 2d20 Heidi - roll 1d20 The first dice represents your hunter; the second represents the civilian you're holding. Dice values/what the rolls mean will be revealed next GM post. Needless to say, you may wish to roll high...

Things seemed to have been going alright. The darkness when they'd arrived was a surprise, but they'd managed to locate three survivors, and they'd found their way back together. Peyton was starting to feel a little better about their mission as Lance spoke over the headsets. At least until static took over and cut him off as he was warning them about things approaching on teh fear scanners. "s**t." The small hunter adjusted her grip on the little girl, hoisting her up a little higher so she could hold her with one arm, cradled against her side. Warrick was called to her free hand, but it was her left, and it still wasn't 100% yet. But it was better then nothing. Backing up put her right behind Heidi, and she passed the other girl an anxious look before looking down at the little girl. She still wasn't responding to anything that was going on, and her skin was cool to the touch. Definitely shock. The increased frequency of the beeps had nerves rising, and she bit of an uneasy groan as fog rolled in. "Back to back, guys?" They might not be able to do much with their arms full, but at least they could watch all sides. As arms began to reach for them Peyton automatically turned her body to put the child she was holding further away from the fog, and hopefully, further away from danger.

Evan didn't have to be told twice to get out of there. In the dark, there was no way to tell how much, if any, of the blood covering the little girl was her own. It figured--of course it figured--that it wouldn't be as easy as just walking back to the extraction point. As the fog coalesced around them, Evan shifted the small, unresponsive figure in his arms to one side just in case he needed a hand free to summon his weapon. Not that it would do much good; he couldn't see anywhere to put the kid down--couldn't, in fact, see beyond the fog and the misty hand-shapes reaching towards them. It was with some small reluctance that he nodded in agreement with Peyton's plan, putting himself, ironically enough, at her weak left side. "Call out if you see anything. Be ready to move. The civilians are our top priority."

Heidi kept her bow out for now, but when static suddenly went off in her ear she jumped and dropped her flashlight from her teeth. "Crap," she hissed, slowly releasing the string so as not to send a random arrow flying and hurt someone. The flashlight was quickly scooped up just as Peyton came up behind her. There's one. Evan's voice made two. "Tuck?" She called out to make sure he was okay.

Tuck paused long enough to readjust the tiny person he held in his arms. "I'm here," his voice was a quiet, easy whisper. He was worried but refused to let the small kid hear it - he wanted to be strong even if it felt progressively difficult to feel as though he was. The child was still unresponsive, but Tuck didn't stop speaking in low, soothing whispers to the little girl as he moved to stand near Evan. "Ten kinds of fu-- messed up, man," Tuck rumbled softly to the other man, all the while smiling at the little girl he held against his chest.

"-hang on- gonna-" after what seemed like forever fighting the almost invisible, Lance's voice flickered back through the headsets, in bursts that were easily cut off, "-reinforcements. Hold on until - I repeat - hold- and don't for-"
Silence again.
The fog pulled back, and this was a major relief. It meant more visibility. It meant that those phantom limbs were gone. It meant that they were safer.
It meant that the hundreds of lumbering, slowly moving bodies that the fog had hidden, barely several feet away from them, saw their prey easily and with slow and very careful deliberation, began to stare at the Hunters with yellowed eyes-
- All hundreds of decaying, shuffling bodies -
- And slowly walk their direction. They did not groan, or shriek, no, they made a strange clicking sound. The sound was coming from their chests, which were leaking a strange black liquid. Odd appendages could be seen coming from each victim's chest as well, appendages that looked like glorified versions of spiders legs, wriggling and writhing, sticking at odd angles out. There was something controlling the body, buried deeply in the chest and former live flesh.
Behind the Hunters there were only two options. To the left was a path that winded out of what looked like the town outpost. It seemed to take a turn into a forest that was fog-covered. To the right was a large shed. It was abandoned, but the door that was currently opened seemed sturdy enough to ward at least some intruders behind. The last option was to stand their ground, but it would require some child shuffling, and also put everyone at risk. The options were limited and so was their time. OOC PLAYERS NEED TO CHOOSE LEFT, RIGHT OR STAY TO FIGHT If you stay to fight only players that DO NOT have victims they are carrying can attack. Roll regular dice, take - 5 auto damage. The undead mob has a cumulative 999/999 HP - it is a VERY LARGE MOB

Of course it had to be ******** zombies. They weren't even your garden-variety brain-sucking kind of undead, either--no, these looked like something out of Aliens and the giant spider from that mission on the cruise ship had babies inside of the cast of Dawn of the Dead. /Coooool./Evan might have been inclined to agree, if he had been watching them from the relative safety of a movie theater and not standing close enough to count each spindly leg coming out of their chests. The temptation was there--was strong--to summon his weapon and carve a gruesome and bloody path through them. They had Moons and bandages, they only had to hold them off until reinforcements arrived. It was doable, probably. Maybe. Or it would have been, if not for the child in his arms. Keeping her and the others safe was their primary objective here; the overwhelming desire to cut loose on moving targets that he didn't have to worry about hurting would just have to wait. Evan took a few steps away from the horde, risking a glance behind himself to better assess their options. To the right was a shed that looked like it might have been safe, but it also might have been an inescapable trap if the walls didn't hold up against the countless zombies. The fog covering the forest to the left didn't look much more inviting, especially because there was no telling what might lurk inside, but at least it was open. They would have room to move, to run. "Head for the trees," he said, going towards the path on the left. "Stay close."

Oh...wow. Um. Wow. Zombies. Everywhere. Heidi's eyes widened as she backed away from them, Matilda held at the ready. Everyone's arms were full but hers, she was the only one who could fight them off. That...wow..that was kind of terrifying. She heard Evan and looked back at him, nodding her head. "Good idea," Heidi replied as she followed Evan to the left.

"s**t." Peyton turned the child even further from danger as the fog cleared and the zombies shuffled into view. < At least they aren't quick.> So reassuring.. As much as she hated to take anything Evan said into consideration, one look at the shed had her falling into quick step behind the tall ex-marine. Precious cargo shifting in her arms. "Right" Left it was. Those woods didn't look much more promising then the shed, but at least they wouldn't get inescapably trapped..

Tuck was glad when he didn't have to make a choice - he felt far more comfortable following orders in situations like these. He always had preferred being told what to do, and that personality quirk suited him just fine. He went to the left, following Evan, Heidi and Peyton; every now and again he turned to make sure they weren't being followed too closely. At least they weren't fast zombies. He'd always hated fast zombies. "Keep moving. Don't slow down."
