He was losing and he knew it. Gale dodged the first spike, but the second caught him around the middle, making him wheeze in pain. He reset the rifle again, and tried another shot, but this one was merely a glancing blow.

The grazing shots still stung and had Before instinctively jerking an arm to the side and spinning the wheel in place. The motion caused the spikes' wires to tangle around random things on the field such as rocks, hardened clumps of mud, Gale's leg.
Another press of the button and the spikes were retracted, the wires whirring as they were reeled back. Along with the rocks and clumps of mud and Gale's leg.

Gale, fortunately, managed to disentangle himself from the wires before he was actually dragged, kicking outwards and landing in a disgruntled heap on the ground. He lay there for a moment, breathing heavily, and closed his eyes, not wanting to get up.
"...that's it," he said, after a minute or so had passed. "I'm out.
"You've won."

Wait. What. What just happened? One minute he was retracting Vanna's spikes, the next, Gale was on his back? And conceding defeat? "Wat." He gawked for a good few moments, leaning against Vanna for support in confusion.
I believe your opponent just told you you've won, the face wrought from iron smirked, immensely pleased with the tournament's turnout.
So that means...O.OBefore got to his feet and dismissed Vanna, limping on over to where Gale was and offering him a helping hand. "Hey, it was a damn awesome match. Even if I have no idea how I won." he chuckled.

The lack of response, even something as little as a roll of the eyes, had her gnawing the inside of her lip as she watched. Stormy remained quiet and still for the rest of the match, reminded once again how quickly full rank hunter battles finished. Hopefully Nevada hadn't run into any trouble . . .
"Good job!" she said as she approached, slow and casual and inwardly wincing; this was not a good follow up for Gale after the news she'd given him, but it wouldn't excuse her from being impolite, especially to another Mist. "Miss Candace would be proud." Her brows knit, though, at seeing Gale lying in the mud like that.
Though Before offered to help him up, she gathered her coat and gently lowered herself until she was settled beside him, deciding that she did have a place in the mud after all. "You okay?" Stormy asked, hesitant for more than one reason.

"Clover!" From off the side of the area a loud and shrill whistle came echoing. A certain redhead was attatched to it and she jumped up and down in excitement. She'd kept quiet through the match, mostly because it was amazing, but now that it was over it was time to make some noise. "CLOOOOVERR!!"
The Sun hunter jumped feet first into the area and dashed to the Mist hunter's side. It didn't take her long at all to get there and it took her even less tie to reliaze that she couldn't properly stop. "Oh...SHII - " Beneath her feet and in the mud her flip flops did her no justice and Ofelia found herself sliding right into the object of her approach. She crashed into him, hard, and the pair found themselves on the ground with her planted firmly on top. When she properly righted herself enough that she was sitting with him beneath she grinned down and grabbed both sides of his face with her hands. "CLOVER, YA WON! YA DID IT!"
His reward was a strong kiss on the lips, Ofelia ignoring their location and everyone around them.

Nevada had been so preoccupied with her thoughts that she ended up coming to the battle much later than she thought.
Namely at the end.
She didn't even know what to say, or what to do.
Shammmmmmmmmmmmme Nevada, Shame.

Apparently learning of Stormy's past had put him off his game more than he had realized. Gale lay there in the mud without thinking too much about the fight, his mind drifting instead to the cold eyed Jack, the disdainful look on his face, the sneering smirk as he'd fought.
Before was leaning over him, offering a hand, but Gale waved it away. "I'm fine," he said. "I think I'll just...stay here a bit. You fought well; nicely done."
The rest of whatever he'd been going to say was lost as a flash of red hair and a familiar voice tackled Before, and he disappeared in a tangle of limbs. He didn't make a move to get up yet, letting the pair have their moment, instead closing his eyes and taking a long, deep breath. Gale heard footsteps coming closer and then someone was beside him, kneeling down in the mud somewhere near his head. Stormy's soft voice floated above him, and he opened his eyes, but he couldn't look at her, turning his face slightly away.
"I lost," he said quietly, and it was not entirely about the fight because the fight did not matter as much as the rest did, as much as the gaping fact of Stormy's ex-boyfriend appearing, shaking the world Gale had spent so much time and effort carefully constructing. Why hadn't she told him, why hadn't she warned him? He felt utterly blindsided, swept off his feet and dumped both metaphorically and literally into the mud.
The back of his head felt sticky and cold. He simultaneously wanted to move and didn't want to move.
"And no," he continued, Gale finally pushing himself vertical. Mud caked his entire back, slimy, wet, and gross, sinking into his shirt and making it feel heavy. He ran blackened fingers through his hair, and they came away brown. Jinhai made a softly soothing sound inside of his head.
"I'm not okay."

The shrill whistle and whooping startled her, and with tensed shoulders she whipped her head about. Patches came barreling through the mud, and she opened her mouth to warn the Sun hunter too late to stop the crash. Well, at least they'd be busy...
In watching Patches come over she spotted Nevada standing alone, and Stormy offered her a fleeting smile before turning to Gale. Her hands fiddled anxiously in her lap. "I still think you won," she said. "You made it to the top three...That's a real accomplishment." But she couldn't help but feel it was her fault he lost: maybe she shouldn't have said anything until after the tournament. Or maybe she should have just let them be at Jack's fight to begin with.
The ache inside began to throb again. Stormy hesitated, then reached out to try and start wiping the mud off his back.

He knew he'd done well enough to get into the top three, knew that he'd made second place, but it didn't matter, not as much as the facts right in front of his face - which was a tall, smirking figure in green.
Gale felt gentle hands against his back, which was starting to become cold, along with the rest of him. He closed his eyes briefly, trying to calm himself, to remind himself of the good fight he'd just had, rather than the loss of his self confidence he was trying to deal with in the appearance of Jack. He drew his knees up against his chest and leaned over them, locking his fingers around the back of his neck, his forehead against his legs and took a long, steadying breath.
"I still lost," he mumbled, and it was less to Stormy and more to himself, and not about the fight at all. He'd wanted so badly to keep his composure around Jack, but the sudden sight of him, incredibly and utterly unexpected, had made him slip back into his old insecurities, and abruptly he was not Gale Gentry, Death Hunter and Specialist, he was Gale Gentry, seventeen year old teenage boy who didn't know how to deal with this sort of situation.
He lifted his head a little, still not looking at her. "Let's go back inside, I don't want to sit here anymore."

She could have sworn she was sinking into the mud like it was quicksand; and she would have let it if it meant dulling the distress mounting inside, if it meant he would look at her. Swallowing, she swept one more layer of mud off and let her hand linger on his back. "You lost one battle, but you've won a lot more."
I'm still here, she was trying to say. I'm not going anywhere. Unless Gale asked her to. Seeing him like this, defeated and distant, frightened her into complete compliance.
Wiping her hands off her raincoat, Stormy forced herself up before offering him a hand. "Let's get you a nice warm shower," she said, trying to smile. "You deserve one."

He hated this, this feeling of insecurity, of self-doubt and confusion. It made his head hurt unpleasantly, and Gale reached a hand up, not caring that it was caked in mud, and rubbed at his forehead tiredly. He could still feel Stormy's presence beside him, could still feel her gentle hand against his back, and it almost made him feel worse.
She had stood now, her hand outstretched, and after a moment's hesitation, he reached up and took it, hauling himself to his feet. Gale stood there, his entire body aching, and now he looked at Stormy, his face an inscrutable mask. Her own hands were covered in mud now, and he leaned forward, placing a very gentle kiss on her lips before pulling away.
"Let's go," he said quietly, and slipped his fingers through hers, tugging her away from the fight, away from the battle, away from everything else.
