Chaya nodded, her red eyes sharpening as she thought about the problem. "Where did he get out from?" she asked. "Can you show me? If I can get his scent this will be easy, but even if I can't we can track from there!"

"He got out of my room but somehow he got out through the front door of the building would be my guess of how he got outside..." Sura wasn't sure which of the two Chaya would want to look at, but she started walking back towards the monster dorms - because either way that would be the place to start from.

Chaya trotted after Sura, humming cheerfully to herself, taking quick steps to keep up with Sura's longer strides. When they reached the door to the monster dorms, she crouched down close to the ground. "Make sure nobody steps on me, okay?" she instructed Sura, and proceeded to sniff thoughtfully and thoroughly all around the area in front of the doors.

And now Sura was on guard duty - which was probably the only skill she really could have had if she'd needed to get a 'real' job. Stand there and look intimidating so nobody stepped on Chaya? Done.
Okay, so Chaya probably hadn't meant for Sura to get all red eye and work on intimidating people to not even go near the doorway, but that was what Sura decided to do anyways, rumbling angrily whenever anybody got too close.
As for the doorway, the only smell of Darus was as if he had nearly had the door shut on him and had squeezed himself between the door and the frame into freedom before running off.

Chaya sniffed at the doors and squeaked happily. "I smell him," she exclaimed. "I think I smell him, rock and mini-smell and sort of like you but not, he smells like your room smells. Or maybe your room smells like him." She looked up at Sura and grinned. "Oooohh, you're all scary, that's really really cool."
She sat back on her heels, her eyes going unfocused as she consulted an inner compass. Then she changed shape, her form flowing smoothly into the big, shaggy white hound. "I can smell better like this," she explained.

She suddenly looked away from her post as scary-body-guard to look down to Chaya as 'actually really docile' mode reactivated. "I think we all smell kind of like each other." Sura offered, but it seemed like either way Chaya knew what she was following after!
Score!
Either way, Chaya's explanation (both of the smell and why she changed forms) were met with a small interested nod. "I understand." she hummed.
The scent, after rubbing on the door and romping up and down the steps excitedly continued on across the grass and towards the monster dorm lake.

Chaya put her nose to the scent and followed it; in this form, smells were like she'd heard colors described by other races, infinitely varied and nuanced, different tones clearly discernible. The follossus smell wove back and forth over the steps, and Chaya performed a couple of aimless-looking little circles before the scent trail straightened itself out and pointed in a definite direction.
"This way!" Chaya reported, and trotted off with her head down, nose to the ground and tail up and waving confidently.

Sura watched the aimless circles with a mix of concern and interest, almost as if watching the Fox and the Hound hide and go seek scene. Not that..she'd..ever...okay, she'd seen that movie once.
Only when the trail moved from the general vicinity of the steps did the Colossus begin to (slowly, due to her large strides) follow after the hound. This definitely wasn't the direction that she'd been thinking to look in.
"Can you tell how long ago the trail was left?" she asked. Because for all she knew they'd be walking after Darus forever.

"Not long!" Chaya said distractedly. "The smell is barely cool, maybe a few degrees of shadow moving, not long at all." It was an easy trail so far, but she kept her attention focused on it the way she'd learned to. You never knew when an easy trail was going to turn puzzling, and paying attention was key.

Well at least the 'not long' was a part of that statement she could understand and would just go off of that for the time being. Shadow moving? What? She'd probably not even think about that statement again unless it came up again.
"Hopefully he is close then." Sura rumbled - perhaps with concern, perhaps with annoyance that Darus had made a break for it. Fortunately, the trail wouldn't get too complicated - unless water complicated things a lot, as the Follossus had jumped in and out of the shallows of the lake as it made a small little jaunt around the side of said lake where it had stopped to swat at the minnows in fascination.
In fact, that's exactly where Darus had stopped his adventure in running away from home.

Chaya paused at the edge of the water. Water could indeed interfere with the trail badly, but a little snuffling around showed her where the minipet had come back out, and while the trail dipped into the water again several times, it didn't take too long for her to catch it again each time. Her tail had drooped a little as the trail initially entered the lake, but it returned to confident waving as Chaya realized that the follossus had moved in and out of the shallows. "Trail is warmer!" she told Sura gleefully.
Her nose ran right into the mini itself, and she snuffed at it, providing that it sat still to be snuffed, then sat down, her tail thumping against the ground proudly. "Found him," she announced, rather unnecessarily.

Sura trailed in and out of the water idly as Chaya followed the trail of the missing minipet (she could just become a detective someday). "Is it actually warmer or just the turn of phrase?" For all she knew, scent trails cooled off and warmed up just like food did.
Darus was knocked over by Chaya's nose, making a surprised noise as he kicked his little legs in the air playfully as he rolled back over and barked at her, ears drooping when he saw 'mom' behind her.
"That you did." Sura replied, praise lacing her monotone as she pat the hound on the head.

"Both!" Chaya explained enthusiastically. "Scent is warm when it's living, so it's warmer when it's recent, and when it's warm it rises higher, so it's easier to smell because it's not just on the ground, it's also in the air above the ground! So a warm fresh trail is easiest to follow, so even if it's cold like undead smell but still fresh we say it's warm because it's recent."
She beamed at the praise, her tail thumping faster. After a moment she transformed back and reached to scoop the minipet up, holding it carefully supported, and offered it to its mistress. "You were naughty," she scolded the follossus. "You worried your momma."

Sura would likely forget all of that information she was just given, but she at least seemed as interested as she could be at the answer she received. "I see..." she answered slowly.
Darus barked again, wiggling in Chaya's arms as he was picked up and wagging his tail, even until Sura took him from her. Him? Naughty? He did attempt the puppy dog eyes of innocence, but as Sura held him in one arm she didn't seem to think anything of it. "Thank you for your help, Chaya." Sura rumbled, holding up the Follossus and giving him a serious look - which Darus was apparently immune to, just continuing to wag his tail.
