"Edith seems like a pretty good bet! He's her division, after all- she's got to look out for her own! Give it another day or so, I'd say. Oh, hey, do you know where I could find a matte knife or something?"

"Another few days," Jordan said. "Matte knife? I don't think I've encountered that tool before. Uh. Ask a Moon if the quartermaster can't help you," he suggested.
He rested his elbows on his knees and laced his fingers loosely together. They were having a normal conversation for once. Maybe he should just leave his questions for later. But when would later be?

"You know... a box knife. Yeah, I should hit up the quartermaster I guess! Just need something to cut a hole here- Found this when someone was clearing out some of the ruined places- if I tape it shut it'll be a better sound box than the one that got eaten- I could just set the old neck on it, restring it and bam! New Uke!"

"Oh, box knife - yeah, the quartermaster will probably have that." Jordan chuckled. "You're certainly being resourceful." It could be some time before any of them would have a chance to get off the island for shopping; even when portals were running again, they'd likely be monopolized for important business and errands at first, with the time between requiring bribery to get on the schedule. Rebuilding out of found materials was probably smart, even if it wasn't elegant.
Jordan fell silent for a little while, watching Jerry work. "I was concerned you might be feeling low," he said after a few moments.

"Why would I feel low?" He laughed weakly, tapping at the box to see just how difficult it would be to cut what was necessary. He'd need to find something to put inside to hold the neck on better... maybe there was a manual somewhere in the library he could find that covered that sort of thing. "I'm excited to have a functional uke again. It's way easier to carry around, and I don't know what I'd do if I lost my guitar."

"You seemed pretty willing to stay behind on the mission," Jordan said, and watched Jerry's face. "Got me worried, a little."
He quirked a half-smile. "It just doesn't seem right for you not to have a ukelele, somehow."

"Oh," He murmured, clearing his throat, "That. W-well. It just... seemed like the logical move is all."

"We don't want to lose you, either." Jordan shifted a little on the couch. "You're a good friend."

He smiled weakly, opening his mouth to say something, but thought better of it. Instead he settled for a quiet, "Th-thanks."
He shifted from the couch to kneel at the coffee table again and look over the refinished fingerboard.
"F-finding a replacement string w-will.. probably be the hardest part. The other ones are salvage-alvage-alvageable at least..."

A faint pang of guilt went through Jordan at the stuttering. He'd gotten his point across, at least. "Did the other one snap?" he asked, instead of pushing the subject further.

Jerry relaxed a little, running a hand through his hair with an exasperated sigh. "Yeeeah, just the A string. I mean, it's just a plastic string, and I'm lucky more weren't chomped through- it was a while ago, but I've held onto it. I THOUGHT I had some spare strings left over but like heck if I can find them."
He shifted a bit, sitting back on the carpet as he stared at the uke in pieces, his brows furrowing as he mulled a few things over. "I'm... I'm still not sorry about... what happened. On the mission. If... if it's me or one of you guys... I'll always volunteer."

"Wire will work instead? Does it have to be a particular kind of wire?" Jordan stared at the ukelele like it was an alien creature. He'd really never given much thought to the construction of stringed instruments, though he had a basic grasp of how they worked. Theoretically, anyway. "Won't that alter the sound of the notes you play on that string?"
He smoothed his thumb along the band of Ferros's ring. "It didn't have to be an either-or, though," he said quietly. "Don't throw yourself away for no reason, okay, man?"

"Just protecting my family," He said quietly, shifting slightly uncomfortably before clearing his throat again, "Plastic would be best to be consistent with the rest of the strings... I have no idea otherwise. It just... has to sound like an A when you pluck it, ahahaha. As far as I can tell."

"That goes both ways," Jordan answered. Then, "Isn't the note dependent on the tension of the wire? Well, I guess the size of the wire would also factor into it. Do you remember how thick the string was? I mean, approximately, I don't expect you to give me millimeter measurements down to the decimal point."

Silently, Jerry handed over the remaining piece of broken string for Jordan to study.
