Thetis watched the television with confusion, unable to understand what was going on. However, things got easier to understand when Ruthie turned the volume down. Suddenly his mind imagined all sorts of hilarious conversations and situations that clearly weren't what was really happening. He might have remained his in fantasy if his ears did not perk up upon hearing the word 'tuna' being spoken.
"Oh, yes, please!" He said as he rolled out of the towel and began to climb up Ruthie's chest.

"Certainly!" She laughed and carried the small creature of delight to the kitchen and set him on the counter. She washed her hands and pulled the fillet from the fridge. "It's red." She held it before him, smiling, her voice trembling with feigned excitement. "Like rubies." She set the tuna aside and grabbed a skillet and vegetable oil from the cupboard. She poured the oil into the skillet and set it on the oven. She started the fire. "So how did you get started with cooking anyway?"
She returned the oil to the drawer. "Did someone teach you or...?" She set the tablespoon in the sink.

Thetis was familiar with this counter. It was a little cold on his paws but it was a nice cool feeling rather than a shivering feeling. On it he paced back and forth as he watched her pull the fish out. His eyes widened naturally when she held it before him, salivating a little as she did. It looked so good! He couldn't wait to eat it. He preferred his food professionally cook over raw though and he sat his furry butt down on the counter as he watched her begin to cook it.
"Oh," he said as he pawed at the counter a bit.
"Addison's mom bakes a lot and her mom teaches her so she thought it would be fun to teach me with her Easy Bake Oven. I don't think she seriously thought I'd learn though!" He said, definitely laughing lightheartedly after saying so.

Ruthie froze.
"Thetis?" She asked suuuuper suspiciously. "Did you have any experience using an oven before coming over here?" Oh no oh no oh no. She worked under the impression that he knew what he was doing. Crap. She could have killed the cat! No! Ugh. What a bad friend she was. She would have to ask more questions.
"And who's Addison?" She smiled. His laughter bubbled up like the happiness in her heart. "She and her mother must have been so impressed when her cat made dessert! How brilliant!"

Ruthie froze but it wasn't long before Thetis did the same. His body lowered to the counter and his eyes fell to the floor. Impressed? No, no one was impressed with what he had done. They could never know what he did. As far as anyone was concerned, it was impossible for a cat to bake. He could never tell them that he was a magical cat who not only spoke but could bake too. No, he was just a normal, pampered house cat to them. He was really good at hiding in their big house too. Sometimes they didn't find him for days. After all, it did take him awhile to get to and from the house.
"No one was impressed. No one knows."

"No one knows?" Ruthie frowned. The oil sizzled. She set the tuna on the skillet and grabbed a spatula. "You do all this amazing stuff and no one knows?" He didn't answer about Addison. Strange. She guessed she was his owner? An owner once? Now? She would come back to it later. "That seems kind of sad, I think."
She set another steak in the pan.
"But you know." She pressed the spatula into the steak. She smiled at him, leaning a bit forward to catch his gaze. "I know, okay? And I care." She stood upright and turned the steak over. "So what else can you do? Any other tricks up your sleeve?"

Normal people couldn't know. It was sad but he had to think about his survival sometimes. Even if nothing bad happened to him physically, a talking cat would probably horrify a normal family. He sighed, practically melting into the counter he was laying on. The more Ruthie spoke about how sad it was, the more he seemed to get depressed. There was a light at the end of the tunnel though.
"Do you mean it?" He asked, his ears perking up slightly. "Truly?"
Her question about what else he could do brought a small smile to his kitty face.
"It's a secret!"

"Ooooh." She chuckled. "A secret? Thetis, I love secrets." She squinted. She grinned. "Can youuuu--" She turned over the other steak. "--Summon teddy bears?" The steaks flaked. "Can you teleport? Whistle? Sing?"
She turned off the heat.
"Dinner's ready!"
She grabbed two plates and set them on the counter, gently placing one steak in each. She washed her hands.
"But really you should tell me." She grabbed a fork and knife from the drawer. She cut off a bit of the fish and munched. "I love secrets."

People loved secrets because they were secret. Once you went and told everyone then they weren't secrets anymore and then didn't that mean they wouldn't love them anymore? Thetis shook his head slightly, and sat up as she put the plate down in front of him.
"I can... play an instrument but which one will remain a secret!"
He definitely was grinning, his little kitty teeth showing. However, maybe he just wanted to eat the fish. His eyes darting down as he smiled and then he looked at Ruthie, his eyes pleading with her. "Will you cut mine up into small pieces?"

"Ohh, more secrets?" A smirk. "But what if I want to hear you play?" She cut Thetis's steak. "Do you plaaaay--" She cut off a piece of hers. "--theee oboe?" Ugh but wait. Oboe required fingers. "Maybe the harp?"
She grinned.
He could play the harp with paws, right? He just had to pluck the strings and play carefully enough for it to stand. He also seemed gentle. Quiet. Just like it!

"It definitely has strings," he said softly, neither giving a yes or no. Chances were high this was a yes, right?! He smiled at her a bit as she finished cutting up his food. In a way it was like he was a child but really he was a cat who didn't wish to get fish all in his fur as he tried to rip a big piece into little pieces.
Content once the steak had been cut up into more manageable pieces, Thetis began to eat.

"Hey diddle diddle--" She swallowed. On the TV a blonde professed her love for the accountant. "--The cat and the fiddle?" She laughed. "Are you smiling? Is that a smile, Thetis?" She grinned. She hadn't noticed this before. She wondered which was more genuine: A purr or a smile? "Too cute."
"You're pretty magical, Thetis. Are you sure you're not a Senshi?"

Under that thick curly black coat Thetis was definitely blushing, his head lowering closer to the plate and filled his mouth with more fish as an excuse. He remained there for a moment before his head tilted to the side in a bashful manner, "I think I'd know if I had fingers."
Oh, if only he had fingers.

"HMM." Ruthie smirked. "Fingers liiiike THESE?" She laughed and wiggled her fingers, then scratched behind his ear. "I'm glad you're a cat." She finished the last of her fish. "Being human comes with such dreadful responsibilities." She set her plate in the sink. "Like doing the dishes."
Lucky Thetis. He probably never had to clean.
"You can sleep and eat and play your secret instrument whenever you please." She nodded. "It's a good life, yes? An easy one?"
She ran water over her plate.
"Except for all the Senshi you awaken of course. That must be difficult--especially if they were as opposed to being Senshi as I was."

Jealous. Thetis was so jealous, or at least he was until Ruthie used those wonderful fingers to scratch behind his ears. He melted, absolutely melted under her touch. Oh, fingers were delightful. Absolutely delightful. Oh, how he wished he had them. Perhaps there was a way for a cat to remain a cat but still have hands. He thought about it and the picture he got was plenty awkward. It was like some weird crossbreed between a cat and person where it was a fluffy ball of fur with hands instead of paws.
"I like to clean," he said, nudging his finally finished plate over to her with his nose.
He didn't want to admit it to her or anyone but he'd never awakened any senshi before. It sounded so horrible! If he awakened them then something horrible would happen to them and probably him! It was better if he didn't and instead just looked after one senshi.
