He hadn't heard of the Haunted House, nor did he understand the reasoning for not going into it, but Ian didn't want to waste time asking about it. From what he'd gathered already, it wasn't a good place to be (which, at least in Ian's opinion, just made it that much more interesting to explore).
He'd made her wince, but he didn't regret it. Perhaps he'd pushed too far; he needed to be a little more careful next time. Ian let a smile curve his lips upwards as he surveyed Nevada.
"Pretty is pretty," he said blithely. "I can appreciate a pretty face here and there, and you're definitely one of them."
He toyed absently with a leather bracelet on his wrist, tugging at it as he listened. Nevada received a very measured smile, Ian tilting his head a little. "No girlfriend," he said lightly, the words deliberately casual. "Haven't been around long enough to find myself a significant other, at least not yet. But I'm glad you like my eyes."
He waited a moment, and then said, "Was that your question, or is it your turn still?"

"Again, by the end of this talk, I will need to be rolled out of here from inflated ego." She blinked owlishly at him. "Well our lives are shorter and shorter by the day, some people like to act quickly. Some others like to take their time." She stared off a little into the distance. "I'm leaning to what happens now, happens. And if I find someone, that is good and worthwhile...I will do my best not to let him go."
She zoomed back in, her eyes dropping from his eyes to the hand toying with a leather bracelet. Nervous habit? One of comfort? Hmm, it seemed she found her next question.
"It was my question, and I don't think it would be fair to ask another in a row. Go ahead handsome."
She moved her eye away from his wrist and back to his eyes, reading them.

He smiled, a careful, catlike smile. "Life is too short to not consider all the possibilities," he said lightly. "Take chances, do whatever you can to live to the fullest. Isn't that the philosophy these days?"
Ian rested his elbow on the table, chin in his hand.
"Hmm...if you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why? And don't say Disneyland," he added teasingly.

"Life is too short anyways." She added simply, "I would say that's the motto for the Island but its more, Live life to the fullest and don't die at the end of the day because of it."
She studied him longer, "Oh handsome, you took away the best option." She had to think about it. She had been to Italy with Otto, to the Sahara, to New york city. Hawaii with Tuck. She had been to places.
"I want to go to Spain, or Italian countryside. Spain because lazing in the sun with no need to be shy about skimpy clothing. I've been to Italy but I want to go the countryside. รจ molto bello, come la calma e rilassante relax." She let it roll of the tongue, sighing. "Italy is a gorgeous country."
Her gaze landed to the bracelet now, reaching over gently to tug his arm and point at the leather around his wrist. She didn't touch it, or tug at it for the sake of what it might mean.
"What does this bracelet mean to you and what did the person mean to you if there was somebody who gave it to you?"

Life is always too short.
A little nagging part of Ian's mind reminded him of this, a familiar face flashing across his thoughts, but Ian pushed it forcefully away, irritation flaring. He didn't let it show on his face, however, and focused on listening to Nevada.
"I went to Italy on a business trip once," he said lightly. "Beautiful place. I've been to Paris, and I've been to Canada, and that's about the extent of my foreign travel."
He relaxed a little against his chair, but Nevada's fingers against his wrist startled him, and Ian glanced up at her, slightly taken aback that she had even noticed it in the first place.
For a moment, he debated not answering, or giving an untruthful answer, but so far Nevada had been truthful with him, and they were still playing. Ian gave a little sigh.
"It was a gift," he said. "From...a friend. A good friend."
It was difficult to describe it. Ian looked down at the bracelet again, twisting it around his wrist in an almost idle gesture.
"We dated for a while," he said calmly, keeping his voice level. "Well...if you could call it dating. It wasn't, not really, more like...we were each other's backup plans if all else failed. We were both very open about it, but there were people who...didn't like it."
Memories flashed across his thoughts, rough and jumbled. Ian's eyes were still on the bracelet. He glanced upwards at Nevada, giving her a wry smile.
"There's a thing about soul mates," he said, almost as though he were lost in thought. "It doesn't necessarily have to be romantic. Sometimes two people just...fit together in all the ways that matter."

"Canada, the most underdog of the countries. I wanted to visit there one day, since we lived in Maine, we weren't too far. But Papa would never have that." She looked away, "France is romantic and I always think if I want to go there, but then I think of Italy, or Ireland...Scotland. All those countries with rich history. Castles. Magic." She closed her eyes, "I always loved believing in magical places."
Her gaze once more opened and looked over at him. The thought that perhaps he wouldn't answer, seeing the hesitation flicker actually disappointed her. She didn't want to win right yet, she wanted to keep playing.
She cocked her head, looking at Ian. The way his face shared dual pain and joy. Then he looked away, and she continued to listen.
No, she knew her soul mate wasn't romantic. Her twin was anything but...
"I'm sorry." She really was, the apology in her eyes. "Game or not, my intent is not to hurt you by making you remember something that brings those back..." She turned head away. "My twin is my soul mate. It must be old to hear that but, There is no one else that matches me in every way possible, that knows me the best. We are sisters, but deeper than that. And even if I didn't feel that Alaska was my soul mate, I have a friend that comes very close to it." Thoughts drifted to a little mist sister, "She would be the closest to a soul companion and I don't think of her romantically at all."
She wanted to know more though, but refrained from asking, her question pulling back from 'what happened/Who was it' to something less...personal.
"What's your favorite midnight snack Ian? We all know we have those secret little cravings at night."

To be fair, Ian was actually somewhat surprised she hadn't pursued him more on the subject of soul mates. It seemed a little silly, saying it out loud like that, but truth be told there was also a small sense of liberation, as though he had been waiting to say it.
"It's not hurting me," he said, a little dryly. "More like you're making me think more than I'm used to."
He hadn't known she had a twin, but the thought made him curious. However, Ian said nothing on this matter and he idly twisted the bracelet again, a faint smile on his face as he surveyed Nevada.
"Coffee with cocoa in it," he said. "Sounds weird, but it was a habit of mine for a long time. That, and those terrible biscotti sticks you can get from Starbucks."
Ian took a last bite of his now slightly browned apple before tossing the core into the trashcan behind him. "My turn," he said lightly, crossing one leg over the other.
"What's the craziest thing you did before you came here?"

"I'm always afraid that asking someone too much will lead to bad blood, It's a small Island Ian. The last thing I need to do is upset someone while I am on it." She rested her chin in her hand again. "But I am certainly interested in making you think instead. It means I am doing it right?" She raised a brow.
"Doesn't sound weird at all, actually pretty delicious." She laughed at the mention of starbucks, " I think that place has a hold on all people around the world."
"The craziest thing?" She blinked and honestly had to quiet to think of it. Anything she had done that was crazy had always involved her twin..."I don't think I have done anything crazy. If you consider that I ran away when I was 18 from my house crazy, that's about the closest I got. I was on the streets for 6 months before Island. Oh! I got it, during those 6 months, I got a job on one of those crabbing boats right? I managed to last about a month on one of those scary monsters before I asked them to fly me out. Crabbing is the worse thing in the world." It had been a very dangerous moment of her life, but she had needed quick cash without resorting to other venues. And the guys had been awesome, even understanding when she left. The commended her on even lasting a month on the open sea.
"Who was your soulmate?" she gave him a level gaze.

"Asking means you're interested," said Ian lightly. "Doesn't mean I'll necessarily answer you, but at least you have the guts to actually ask what other people might not."
Somehow hearing that Nevada had been on a crabbing boat was funny to him. Ian gave her a sideways glance, half concealing a smile, but then he let it spread across his face, shaking his head so that a few strands of dark hair fell across his eyes.
"Crabs are delicious, though," he said, and gave a small laugh.
The smile, however, faded somewhat at her question, a slightly resigned look on Ian's face. He had half expected her to ask eventually, but the question was whether or not he was going to answer it properly.
"...Patrick," he said quietly, after a long moment. "His name was Patrick."

"Well I've always been a curious one..." Nevada watched his face change from wary to amused. "Oh yes, Crabs are quite delicious, but let me tell you, catching them is not. And I was quite a sight with my gear on. The queen crabber of the sea. Everything was a size too big for me. I made a better mascot than worker." She shook her head.
"I made a good amount of cash though for one month, since our crabbing actually brought in a lot. It was a good time in the season to go out on the boat too. Plus you know, Crab dinner all the time." She patted her stomach.
His laughter died away, making her somewhat regret asking the question. his face falling into a resigned look.
"What happened to Patrick?" Did something happen? Did they have a falling out. The game was loss on her in the need to understand why Ian looked the way he did, She leaned over the table, her hand reaching up to cup his cheek in it. "Did something happen to Patrick?"

He felt her fingers against his cheek and almost wanted to lean into them, let her fingertips brush over his cheek - but he stopped himself instead, reaching up a hand and gently drawing hers away from his face.
"Patrick's no longer here," Ian said calmly. "He died sometime last year."
And he left me behind.
The bitter anger swelled in his stomach and then subsided as Ian forced it back down. He pulled the calm and collected facade back onto his face and squeezed Nevada's fingers once before letting go again.
"It's all right," he said lightly. "Patrick was here and now he's not, which means that it's something in the past."

Oh..Oh Ian. Nevada heart fell for him, losing his soul mate? Losing his friend. It wasn't a place or time that separated the two. It was life and death. She couldn't imagine the pain, the utter loss in his heart or soul that one that matched him so was taken away. She had felt betrayal and intense loneliness from Alaska, but there was always a feeling that she'd find her twin again. Ian didn't even have the option.
She got up instead, coming around the cafeteria table and wrapping her arms around the mist hunter neck and into her hug. She was a-okay with touching and giving hugs and regardless if he wanted one or not, he got one.
'Sorry handsome." She repeated again. Yeah it was in the past, but from her experience, it was the past that haunted someone the most. "I'm sorry that he left." She whispered. Letting him go now. The last thing she did before she went back to her side was brush his bangs back a bit and then returned to her seat.
"It's your turn for a question Handsome...Two if you'd like since I asked two in a row." He could ask her anything now, whatever he wanted, she'd answer him truthfully. Just that admittance from him alone earned him a loyalty and friendship from the mist girl at least.

He didn't want her hug. He didn't want her feeling sorry for him because he had spent his entire life with people looking down at him, clicking their tongues at him, pitying him, and for what? For merely existing?
Pity was a useless emotion.
Ian didn't push her away, however. To do so would be rude, and he wasn't about to reject the comfort that she was offering. He didn't mind the touching either, but the sadness he could feel radiating from her made him feel mildly annoyed, though this was buried beneath the calm and collected facade.
"It's all right," said Ian lightly, and reached a hand up, squeezing Nevada's arm gently before she pulled away, his eyes flickering slightly. "Like I said, it's in the past. It's all said and done, he's all dead and gone, and life moves on."
Leaning against the table, Ian wished for a cup of the coffee he had spoken of earlier. He smiled at Nevada, slow and catlike, idly tugging at the bracelet again. "What's something you want to do but you know you shouldn't?"

She nodded, moving on to the next question. Whether he wanted it or not, needed or not. Pity would always be the first emotion to play. She sincerely hoped it would feel like a new start for him.
"Oh Handsome." She gave him the most charming smile she could put on, "There is a lot of things I want to do to this Island that I shouldn't. I could give you a list."
She leaned in close.
"I want to...." She held the words on a heavy breath, giving her most lower lidded eye, biting her lip.....She may have dropped her gaze down from his eyes before whispering...
"Blow up the cafeteria kitchen. It's horrid in there, have you seen it?"
She sat back smiling, "I think honestly, I'd be doing everyone on the Island a HUGE favor."

He arched a brow as Nevada moved closer, a smile curving his lips upwards. If this was a game of chicken, he was certainly not going to be the first to move back, nor show any sort of hesitation.
But then Nevada moved back, and Ian gave a laugh, shaking his head, some of his hair falling into his face again. He swiped it back with a careless movement of his hand and smirked.
"I'm sure it's terrible, if going by the food is any indication," he said.
He did not mention how he appreciated the subject change from Patrick a great deal.
