Pushing past the entrance of the building, Amarus and Van and their party entered the actual building. There was a fountain, and Amarus was all too happy to see it. She rested herself on its edge, dangling over, pushing her whole face into the water. She felt the cool relief of it, and then reached in to wash off her hands, before cupping them, pouring more water over herself. She took a cup off one of their allies, and used it to take a long, cool drink.

All her wounds felt better, her thirst was gone, her exhaustion evaporated. She was so grateful for the break that she actually smiled, letting herself relax on the fountain's lip as Van skirted the edges of the fountain looking distinctly annoyed by the prospect: or, more accurately, he looked like he could really use the water, but for some reason didn't want to.
Eventually, he gave in, and took a long drink, washing off whatever was necessary. He didn't really like being cold, though. Cold, or damp. He draped himself over something warm to try to dry off fast.

Once everyone had recovered, they all headed towards the trapped hall.

Amarus went first, steeling herself, preparing to run just like she'd had to in the forge, but to use that ability to plan quickly that she loved so much.

The first trap, caltrips, were easy to dodge: she just jumped over them, and kept on walking.

The second and third, however, caught her off guard: a spray of oil caught her, stinging the skin, and moments later whatever bit of the oil had gotten on her caught fire briefly. It hurt, but not too much to keep going; she put out the flames as she ran the rest of the course, dodging everything else thrown at her.

She waited at the end of the Corridor for Van to follow.

Van steeled himself for the traps. He hoped to observe from Amarus' run down the hall what, exactly, this entailed. He managed to doge the caltrips too, finding them just as easy, and though he avoided the oil that would make him burn worse, he did take a hit with the torch, being vaguely singed.

That sort of set him on a run of bad luck, and he took a mace to the butt. Whimpering, by the end of the course, he wasn't too much more wounded than Mar herself was.

Again, Amarus went first, especially since she was slightly healthier than Van was. It was a room full of tiles, and she was immediately suspicious. The first tile she stepped on, she felt a rain of something wet rejuvenate her. She had no idea what any of it was, but... at least she was doing okay, now? She sighed in relief, to realize that she once again felt whole.

Her second step was not as graceful. A couple weapons shinked right by her head, but the resulting loud clanging sound purged something from her memory: her time with Ricci, the bully who'd harassed her and mimicked her for half a semester, was gone.

She was lighter for having lost it.

The third time she took a step, it did absolutely nothing to her, and she was fairly grateful for that.

The fourth, a pillar of flame engulfed her for a moment, left her seared and coughing in pain. She really did not enjoy that at all, and she was really close to the end of the room when she took one final step.

What resembled half an Iron Maiden crushed down around her, and her screams turned into a choked gurgle as the spikes dug into her skin. She took a much bigger hit than she would have hoped, and felt as though she'd barely made it out.

She waited, in pain, at the other end of the room.

The Gauntlet pt 3 - Mystic Tiles
Starting/Current HP: 30
Ending HP: 15
The rolls:

  1. The tile you step on gives way under your feet... and nothing happens.
  2. As you step on this tile, something wet sprinkles on you from above. Whatever it was, you feel better. Recover 15 HP.
  3. A tower of flame shoots up from the tile, badly burning you. Take 10 damage.
  4. CLANG! Something hard and heavy falls from the ceiling. You forget something.
  5. You activate a trap. Take 5 damage.
  6. You activate a trap. Take 3 damage.
  7. A companion reaches out and pulls you to safety! Nothing happens.
  8. As you step onto the tile, you are filled with a feeling of... elation...? Recover all HP.
  9. A companion reaches out and pulls you to safety, taking your place! Except... they're gone. Lose a companion.
  10. CRUNCH. You can still hear your companion's screams of pain as they suffer heavy damage. Take 50% HP loss (ie if you are 30/40, take 15 damage).

Van wasn't exactly excited for his turn.

The first tile he stepped on, he made sure it was the same he'd seen Amarus step on: it seemed like it had been a good idea, and had helped her recover a little. She had needed it then, and Van needed it now. His ears flicked as the liquid trickled down over him, but he relished the sensation.

Unfortunately, his memory wasn't the best. He then stepped onto a tile that launched a series of arrows at him. A couple grazed his arms, and he sucked in a little whimper of pain each time one skinned him.

He jumped onto the next tile, and if he'd been watching, he may have realized it was the same one that'd seared Amarus with a pillar of flame; unfortunately, that sent the little pup yelping off the tiles, and right into two more traps.

The first one, the tile had cleverly disguised caltrips hidden everywhere. The second one, once his feet were sore, merely unleashed a rope that lashed at him; it had a barbed end, but he avoided it by dashing to the other side of the room.

He stood there, panting, next to Amarus. And yet, somehow, he'd sustained less damage than she had, even if he started in more pain than she did.

Amarus and Van, along with their entire party, had made it through until this point. They were in a circular room, filled with shelves, containing several different goblets. A fountain in the middle of the room beckoned: Amarus took a step forward, hoping to drink from its waters. However, a javelin stuck into the ground stopped her.

She stared at it, wounded and tired. Van bounded up to stand beside her, holding an arm out to keep Amarus from proceeding in. His red eyes were wide, and he was hoping she wouldn't be stupid enough, or reckless enough, to try to fight the Guardian. But they were at an impasse... what could they do?

They had to fight. That was all there was to it.

She was quite wounded, and there wasn't much time left for her; Amarus would have to fight fast, and hard, to stay alive at all. She fired a series of shots into the guardian.

They wouldn't sacrifice their allies, or let them come to harm. She believed... for once, she could protect them.

Van, looking back at his allies, and then towards the creature they faced, knew in his heart he'd have to try. He'd have to try with every fibre left in him, he'd have to fight as hard as he could, for all their sakes.

He'd have to fight, and not give up.

Van was so strong, despite how weak and silly he seemed; every move was his new opportunity to prove so.

"We're champs," he said, agreeing with her, grinning widely. Still, he was showing the wear and tear of battle. Every swipe of the guardian seemed to push him closer to death.

Cervantes was stuck, now; she knew he couldn't move, or he'd be risking death. Amarus had to finish this, on her own.

He'd done so much already, she knew that she could help. She could protect him, because he believed in her. Amarus smiled to herself, her back to Van, her back to the party.

She was alone, with the Guardian, and she would feel no fear. She may have, once, been deemed prey... but she would show this creature what she was worth, and it would not make it out alive.

Amarus dodged the Guardian's attacks; everything was happening in slow motion around her, as she moved like a blur, anticipating each of his blows. She was doing this on adrenaline alone, as her health was critically low.
