This was his life.
Looking dumb in front of new people (they must be cute, because Stern was sure he was just really ineffective in front of cute strangers), this was his life, summed up.
He took it out on the monster they were fighting, with a faintly sullen punch right to the chin (?? Chin area?? how the hell did he know, he was no doctor!). "NIce job." At least the other two had been heavy hitters. Or at the very least, hitters. She felt disgruntled and vaguely useless at her general inability to pull her own weight against these monsters.

"It wasn't such a bad party after all," he told the stranger who'd talked to him earlier during the fight. "I'm Stern, by the way! Nice to meet you, and, um, as far as dancing goes I bet you'd be really good at it or something--"
He looked like a deer caught in headlights.
"Or, you know, um-- I meant because you're good at fighting and-- I'm just gonna grab this and leave now, okay," he said, booking it out of there like he was on fire.
