"I know because I trust them." she simply stated, resuming her seat at the table. Figuring he wasn't going to eat his cookie, Candy inched it toward her. Better to have somephony eat it than let it go to waste.

"I remember once I had a whole cart of baskets to deliver. They were for my half brother's wedding. Really great party I must say!" she rambled for a minute, then blinked. "Right! Well, I couldn't pull the cart all by myself, so I went and asked C.C. for some help. She was busy at the moment, but she stopped what she was doing and helped me pull the cart all the way to Draft's club." She smiled at the memory.

He seemed to be impressed with her creation, and that made her insides want to bubble over. "I did! It's one of my favorites I don't sell it in the shop because it doesn't really fit the theme. But it's a quick meal when I am busy!" Her eyes sparkled with joy "Of course it's for you! Consider it a gift from a friend!."

Hard Truths eyed Candy Dandy critically, none too satisfied with her answer. However, it was none of his business and he had no say in it, so there was no point in dwelling on the matter. If she trusted other phonies as her friends, hopefully they were and always would be. If not, well...maybe then he would make it his business.

Nudging his uneaten cookie the rest of the way to the mare in encouragement, he began to eat the special meal as he listened to Candy's story about her half-brother's wedding. He wasn't really sure who all the phonies she referred to were, yet, but he decided to keep them in mind. Chances were he would or already had seen them around Phonyland and simply hadn't known.

"I guess that counts for something, especially if she was already busy," the unicorn murmured, chewing thoughtfully. "But you seem like a nice phony. I can't imagine anyone who would deny you a favor, even if they weren't your friend or if they didn't know you at all."

There was a time that Hard Truths seemed to be rendered speechless. He stared at the remains of the food a while before finally finding his voice. "A friend...?" he repeated quietly. "But...but we just met, and I-I insulted you," he argued, as if afraid to accept that she had, indeed, called herself his friend. "And I turned down the cookie you gave me. A-and I've been eating your food without any compensation to you at all," he reminded her. "I've done nothing to earn your friendship."

His expression was one of pure bewilderment as he studied the face of the pink, jolly phony.

Candy snatched up the cookie as Hard Truths ate his food. She liked to think that she was a nice phony. She tried her hardest to include everyphony and make them happy, at least for a moment. When he repeated her calling him a friend, she nodded, as if it were the simplest thing in the world.

"I don't insults too seriously." she said, finishing the second cookie with a lick of her hoof. "Some phonies use it as a defense mec...mech.....mechanism! Yeah!" Candy was proud of her large-ish word usage. "When they are scared or maybe when their feelings are hurt. I don't know if that is you personally, but I think that it just sorta happens. Can't fault you for what you can't control!"

"As for the food, sometimes you make sacrifices for your friends." She looked at the mostly empty plate as if giving him the food was nothing at all. "What's a little treat here and there if it cheers somephony up? Perhaps one day I can coax a smile out of you." She winked and then giggled impishly.

Truths was astonished. His eyes widened as if seeing her for the first time, staring as she at the cookie. So...she hadn't been as air-headed or naive as he'd thought. After talking with her for a while, he'd discovered she was a great deal more aware of phonies and friendships than he'd originally guessed by her happy-go-lucky attitude.

He had judged a book by its cover; something he frequently scorned other phonies for doing, but at the same time, something Candy had not done. She'd guessed he'd had some reason for acting the way he did, and though she didn't know what it might have been - defense mechanisms or otherwise - she didn't seem to blame him for it. She trusted him; gave him the benefit of the doubt.

"And what if I said it's something I could control?" he answered seriously. Truths believed in owning up to his deeds whether he was proud of them or not. He couldn't allow Candy to let him get off with an explanation as easy as 'he couldn't help himself'. "I really did mean what I had said at the time," he confessed, "but I see now that I was wrong. So I'm sorry for saying what I'd thought was the truth earlier." He bowed his head in sincere remorse.

Ah, he'd been tricked! As an unwilling smile tugged on his mouth, he told the curly-maned mare, "That's not fair! Of course if you say that, I'd smile," he cried, turning his head as if to hide the fact. "But...thank you for the meal. I really enjoyed it." He would have to be sure to repay her for it somehow, some way. "Did you have a name for that particular dish?"

The baker was used to being judged early on in her interactions with phonies. She was silly, and happy. Being the child of the famous TACO gave her a bit of a stigma about being a flake. But she really tried to beat this notion. Thats why she spent a long time studying the phonies that came into her shop. She learned a lot by watching others.

"Well we can call your last words...a trial run! Like when you try a new recipe for the first time, and it doesnt always come out like it should. I have no hard feelings toward your trial run."

When he smiled, she smiled wider. "That was the plan!" She announced. "Igot you to smile! As for the dish, I don't really have a name for it. Don't think I have ever really thought about it." She was suddenlynstruck with an idea. "I know! How about since younliked it so much, you come up with the name? If you want to I mean." She added, hoping not to put too much pressure on the little colt.

"'Trial run'," he repeated, shaking his head half-musingly. "Sure, sure...let's call it that." He felt like Candy Dandy was missing his point; missing his attempt to take responsibility for previous his actions. Still, what did it matter, really, if she missed it or not? She was willing to forgive him and that was all that counted.

Fighting his smile back down (though it still refused to leave his face entirely), Truths tried to hide his pleasure at Candy's suggestion he name the dish. "I may not be experienced in naming created dishes...but I think I could manage that," he answered, attempting to keep the glee out of his serious tones.

"Hmm...I'd say it should be named after its creator. But the fact that this is one thing of yours that isn't sweet and doesn't include candy...maybe it should be called...'Just Dandy'?" He was a little conscious of the unimaginative name idea, but if it was just something she made for herself, he figured that no real customers would come to learn of its lack of creativity.

Oh finally! Candy was so happy to see the youngster loosen up and let himself have a good time. Hmmm, maybe that was her secondary talent? Making phonies smile! That would be a fun talent!

She clapped her hooves together with glee when he agreed to name her dish. With a name, it could go on a menu! Maybe not hers, but Sunny Delight was opening a restaurant with a few other phonies. She could give the recipe and its new name to her as a congradulatory gift! Oh but she would be sure to have to mention that Hard Truths named it...

Her fluttery attention was drawn back to the foal that occupied her thought at the moment. When he announced his name for it, she grinned wildly.

"Just Dandy? I like it! I think it fits what I make it for just perfectly. " Her appreciation towards the vermillion foal was quite evident. "Thanks for helping with the name!"

Glad that its creator seemed to approve of the suggestion for the meal's name, Truths was almost grinning again before he recalled that he wasn't quite so used to expressing satisfaction. Clearing his throat, he nodded.

"Good. That's settled, then. And...it was nothing, really." He looked down at his hooves, wondering if he had spent too much time here already. The mare's child-like enthusiasm seemed to be getting to him and he wasn't sure what to make of it.

Picking up the plate in his mouth, he stepped away from the table and carefully brought the empty dish up to the counter. Once he set it down, he glanced back over his shoulder tentatively, seeming conflicted about whether or not to say something before something finally won him over.

"I hope I can...maybe stop by again sometime. If not for the sweet stuff, then for Just Dandy, at least." ...Which was weird to say because it could have implied he expected to stop by for the phony instead of the food. Ah, well...he supposed it wouldn't be too bad if she took it either way. "Thank you for having me, Candy."

Candy watched him take his plate to the counter. What a neat customer! Most phonies left their plates on the tables for her to pick up in between orders. It became a real hassle when it was busy.

When he asked to stop by again, Candy practically wanted to explode. A return customer!

"You can come back anytime you like!" she exclaimed, rising from her seat to show him the door. "I'll be sure to have the ingredients for Just Dandy always stocked for when you make a visit." She opened the door for the foal, glad to have someone to talk to for so long.

"You are most welcome. Thank you for stopping by! Come back again soon!" She winked as she said this, giggling happily.

With a solemn nod in acknowledgement and gratitude, the unicorn foal parted ways with Candy at the door. He shook his head and smiled softly to his head as he went on his way, wondering what kept the cheerful mare so sweet and jolly. As long as she worked there, though, and enjoyed what she did, he was certain other phonies would appreciate her and her hard work as well. Maybe it wasn't such a waste after all.
