"Whomever catches you eye Ruthie! The when and the why isn't too important, it's more about the journey and the ride," he told her, leaning in. His volume level was increasing and he was struggling to contain himself. James could be quite passionate at times. "I guess you can just say I propose taking any chance you see worth taking," he pulled himself back and sipped on his straw. He had to remind himself to breath and calm down a little. "Let no good opportunity pass you by," he encouraged. "Grab life by the horns and make it your adventure and know that it's not safe to go alone!" He laughed because of his poorly used game reference.

Judging by his enthusiasm, Ruthie almost wondered if he wanted to go on a date with her, but nooo. He left their conversation to grab drinks! He seemed uninterested in dating! She would leave the thought for now since it could damage their friendship or make class awkward or expose her to rejection, which she acknowledged she would face eventually, but why face it now?
She once heard a bookkeeper play the piano at a local shop. Maybe she would find him and try her luck?
"You're a Zelda fan? I like that." She sighed. "I guess you're right. I'll put myself out there. Let's see how it goes?"
She glanced at the clock. A few more minutes until she needed to leave and face Tetrisaurus: Her greatest Tetris foe. She said, "What are you taking this semester, by the way? Maybe we have a class together?"
She hoped so! She loved walking into class and seeing her friends.

James was much more talk than show and if he was interested in Ruthie he certainly wasn't going to voice it. The reserved nature within him kept him from pursuing adventures of the romantic kind. Besides, they were friends and with how few the man had, well he wasn't willing to risk loosing that.
"Of course!" he chimed happily. He loved games, though he hardly played them as of late. "How could I not? I mean, it's an adventure in itself trying to figure out what continuity exists in those games," he laughed. RPG games were his favorite because it was like a choose your own adventure, sure it had a specific storyline but how you got there was completely up to you.
"COMM 3200, Persuasion Theory and Practice, ED PS 5005, Writing Methods II, ED PS 5320, Reading Methods II, and ENGL 3610, Argumentative Writing," he answered settling himself back into his chair. "Mostly upper-division stuff to finish my degree."

"Well we should play sometime." She smiled. "When we're not working on Writing Methods, of course."
She felt lucky sharing a course with him. Granted, toward the end of their undergrads, they saw the same faces, but a built-in friendship reassured her that she wouldn't suffer coursework alone, and maybe they could bond over the 30-page writing assignments or case studies or hour-long lecture. She wondered what he planned to do after graduation, but it seemed so distant, and they could figure that out over next summer.
Perhaps they would lead ordinary lives, become neighbors, water the plants, talk about the weather, move to the suburbs...
Were they the kind of people to grow involved in a war?
Certainly not, she thought.
"Well," she said, rising with her drink. She pulled her laptop into her bag and smiled. "As always, it's been a pleasure! Please, let me know when you want to do this again. You're incredibly funny, with your references and whatnot. Maybe video game development is for you! Who knows what the future holds? Walk me out?"

"That'd be nice, I've got a few multiplayer rpgs too," he offered collecting his bag as she put her things away. "If we ever get time between course work," he laughed raking a hand through his messy hair. Graduation was approaching more rapidly than James thought he was prepared for but he knew he could handle it. He'd been preparing his whole life for it and he had a lot of catching up to do.
Going missing sure did put a damper on his studies.
A semester, three courses and thousands of dollars wasted.
"Any time Ruthie," he told her slinging the bag across his abdomen. He played with the strap a little bit then snagged the remains of his drink off the table. Pulling the lid off he downed the rest of the contents and tossed the now-empty cup into the nearest trash can. "Of course," he replied with a nod.
What kind of gentleman would he be if he let her walk alone?

"Oh you play?" Ruthie could use a tank, or at least a virtual meat shield to take a few hits. Whenever she solo'd as DPS or Support it ended with KO or she ran away. With a tank, though, she could last more than five minutes in an arena. She wondered if James was any good, but it mattered not--even if he played below her skill level, she could train him. "Link me to the games you play when we get home, and we can party up."
Seeing James warmed her heart. How fun it seemed to game with him during the school year as well!
She started for the door, flipping back her hair and smiling at James, but tripped over her own two feet. She stumbled forward, caught herself, and chuckled. That was embarrassing, but hopefully he didn't notice?
He stood right behind her. Of course he noticed.
"I'll see you soon?" She leaned against the door, grinning.

"Here and there," he shrugged. He wasn't great but he wasn't bad, after all he had spent most of his hermitdom playing various video games. Because of his nature to game-bounce he hadn't gotten particularly good at any one game and was certainly a 'jack of all games'. "I can do that," he agreed, confirming with a solid nod.
He tried not to laugh when she stumbled over herself, and he did a good job really, but couldn't hide the amused smile spread across his lips. "You okay?" He asked, arching an eyebrow. He wasn't trying to be condescending, he was simply amused.
"Definitely," he agreed, pulling open the door for her. "Just text me whenever you get free time?" He offered, then added, "I'll do the same and I'll see you in Writing Methods." With that, he let her pass him and went on his way.
It was nice to catch up.

"HAHA YEAH." She smiled and rubbed the back of her neck. "Let's just pretend that never happened, okay?" She stepped through the open door. "Thank you, good sir! Looking forward to seeing you in class!"
Seeing James left her energized and fresh and bright. He seemed just as kind as she remembered! They would have to play sometime for sure--she could make him a gaming BAMF in no time.
Grinning, she started her way home.Nuxaz Fin! Thank you so much! <3 This was great fun and we should totally do this again!
