Flame roared and burst around Jordan, and he squinted, throwing his arm up to protect his eyes. Ferros roared in his mind, a deep, rumbling sound of fury. Summon me! I will show them flame.
No. We've already picked some of their shield off. We could kill them. Not breaking the kid, remember? Jordan shook his head and lunged at Al again as the last wisps of flame flickered out; half of his attention was focused on calming Ferros, and when he brought the dagger around to pierce Al's side, he put more strength behind it that he'd meant to.
He yanked the blade free and fell back several steps, breathing hard. He could still smell smoke. "Sorry. You all right there?"

Al staggered backwards while giving Jordan a stunned look. Nuru was screaming in his mind to stop, he couldn't protect you any more Al. You can't get hurt. Tell Jordan to stop, to stop right now!
Al fell to sit on the ground as he panted heavily, once he caught his breath enough - he finally spoke, "N-nuru says to stop."

Jordan nodded and took a slow, deep breath. He sheathed the barrier daggers and leaned over, resting his hands on his knees, just giving himself and his weapon a few slow ticks to finish calming down. Then he straightened and moved over to offer Al a hand up. "Sorry about that. Ferros got pissed about the fire. You did great."

"More like he wanted to return the favor," Jordan laughed. "He likes fire, but he prefers to be the one making it." He hauled Al to his feet with an easy pull. "I didn't break your shield, right? I don't see any blood."

Al was unsteady on his feet at first before re-situating with a sigh of relief. "Naw man, Rep told me and Nuru already to be careful... almost though. Like. VERY. Close."
Nuru was irritable as he commented 'Too close.'
"Thanks for not letting him, I think I would have died," ... why was Al smiling ear to ear as he said that?...

"Yeah. It's better to stop before your shield actually breaks. Saves time and extra pain." Jordan grinned at Al, relaxing now that he knew Al was fine. "He distracted me there, I didn't intend to hit you quite that hard."

Jordan angled an eyebrow at Al. "Look at it this way - you got us to stop being careful. It's kind of a reflex at this point. I've broken coffee mugs by squeezing them if I get too angry."

Al pouted, "I'm made of tougher stuff than that. I mean. All that and my shield is still in one piece."
"Quit it," scolded Nuru between frantic bouts of repairing Al's fear shield. "Can't you see ahm hurtin' hea'? Way too close."
Al looked stung and lowered his gaze.

Jordan patted Al's shoulder. "You got us down to about a third. That's pretty damn good, you know. Check back when you're a full hunter and we'll take you on full strength. That'll be something to look forward to." He grinned toothily.

"Coffee and something to eat," Jordan nodded. "Get a little energy back." He picked his coat up and pulled it back on, settling the scarf over it. "Good thing I put this aside," he said. "I've singed enough of my own."

Al laughed and grabbed his own by the sleeves, opting to hold it like some teddy bear that has long since lost all its fluff than putting it on, "Lead the way man."

When they got to the cafeteria, Jordan collected a cup of coffee and several of the least dubious-looking sandwiches and found a table by a window. Sparring always made him hungry; whether that was the energy expenditure or something psychological, getting something to eat was always good.
