Everything happened quickly, which was how things always went when Sailor Iris and Captain Labyrinthite clashed, and the black-and-pink haired man was blinded by the light of the princess's crystal. His hand hovered above the tar senshi's chest, curled and poised to reach in when it shot to his own chest, clutching at the fabric of his shirt.

Labyrinthite staggered backwards as an intense burning feeling rippled through his body, starting from the invisible cavity of his starseed and seeping into his veins and through the rest of him. He didn't stay on his feet for long before the agony forced him to his knees, his nails digging into the fabric and trying to tear it open. His eyes were wide open, his mouth too, and he stared at Iris with a look mixed between shock and pain.

What the ******** was she doing to him?

It quickly reached the point where the pain was too much and his eyes squeeze shut as he let out a cry of agony. "Gaaaaaaaaaah!" He felt like he was flickering, like a glitch in a game, and being torn apart.

Whatever she was doing to him, he didn't want it.

He didn't want it.

So it failed and he crumbled to the ground still crying out in pain.

Something was wrong. It wasn't like Iris used her crystal like this everyday and had a perfect idea as to what was supposed to happen. However, she had used her crystal like this two times now, and something was bothering her about this particular round.

The chaotic energy wasn't dampening at all.

Usually as she focused her energies upon the crystal, she could feel the darker energies gradually fade away, almost like a bad memory. She could feel her strength being sapped away by the crystal, yet the chaos she sensed remained steady, not seeming to diminish in the slightest.

Her own strength was gradually getting leeched away by the crystal, and when her body had enough, her dress rather suddenly turned into pink light that seemed to shred into small threads. The threads shrank, leaving her usual fuku in place. Though she held her hands out, as if the crystal was still there, it had vanished the moment her dress seemed to disappear.

Her body was trembling as she inhaled and exhaled heavily, every single breath taking much more effort than it should have. Her legs gave way beneath her til she was on her knees.

I can't afford to pass out this time... she told herself as she forced her body to barely stay up and conscious. It was rather difficult with how her vision was growing blurry. It was too much effort. It made noticing the still dark uniform nearby rather difficult.

It didn't stop hurting and it didn't seem like it was going to stop any time soon. Was this how he was going to face death? Crumbled on the ground, burning from the inside out until the light and power of Iris's crystal finally broke him apart?

The intensity of the burn dulled slightly as she shifted down from her princess form, involuntary. Though he couldn't focus on much more than the pain jolting through him, he did force his eyes open long enough to see Iris fall to her knees. For a moment, as the weird glitchy flickering feeling dissipated, it registered to him that she had been weakened. Exhausted, by using her crystal but his body convulsed on the ground from the strain of trying to force his starseed in a direction he didn't want.

Despite the sharp shoots of pain he was experiencing, the captain pushed himself onto his knees, his fingers pushing into the concrete as his picked himself up. His arms shook with the weight of his body and his breathing was labored as he struggled to lift his head and look at her. Then, he was looking but not seeing because his vision kept slipping in and out.

Still, Iris was weak and this could be his only opportunity to get rid of her so he tried to force himself forward. His movements were slow, jerky and it was obvious that anything he tried probably wouldn't work out but he just needed to outlast her. It was like Haymitch in the Hunger Games, he just needed to outlast his opponent and survive. If she passed out before he did, then maybe. Just maybe he could kill her, or the other senshi.

They both seemed so far away though...

Parthenope missed much of the next few moments, too busy coughing and wheezing to really grasp the situation at hand. Even as it quickly went from bad to worse. The sharp cry drew his attention and he turned just in time to see Iris crumble to the ground. He hissed as he tried to lift himself to his knees, almost doubling over again due to the pain in his abdomen.

His eyes shifted to the other man on the ground that was now mobile, scrambling towards Iris. Seeing the weakened man recovering gave him a sudden burst of energy, and by some miracle he was able to rise to his feet. He had to get to her first. He just had to. Parth groaned with the first could steps before stopping in his tracks, taking in a few deep breaths to try and will the pain away.

She needs you.

Everything started to dull as the adrenaline coursed through his body, giving him the extra push to press on through the final few steps. It didn’t take long for the senshi to make it to the other man. There was so much he wanted to do and say. So much that he could seeing as they were finally at his mercy. Maybe if he and Iris were at their best but not now. Not when iris could barely hold herself and and he could barely hold himself together. All he thought to do was incapacitate him further to give them a better chance at getting away. A swift kick to the stomach saw to that.

“Hope you feel that tomorrow too…” Parth grumbled out as he made his way to Iris, a hand falling on her shoulder to support her as best as he could without burdening her with his weight. “We gotta get out of here.”

Senior year meant less time for everything, including senshi activities. Irene had been forced to cut back on her solo missions along with her hours at work. But she wasn't about to stop patrolling altogether. That night found her partnered with Psyche, and it was sort of awkward. While she was the Asteroid who was best able to communicate with their formerly missing teammate, that didn't mean that she knew what to say.

"So... quiet night, isn't it?" That was vague enough to be harmless, right?

Of course, her observation was immediately proven false when a huge aura overwhelmed her senses. It didn't seem right nearby, but it felt as strong as if she was standing next to it. And there was something familiar about it. The last time Irene had felt something on this scale, it had been when Iris had done that purification.

That was no guarantee that that was what was happening, or that Iris was even the source. But if it was Iris, and it was a purification, why wasn't Irene invited? Hadn't she performed well before? What was Iris playing that?

It was that, rather than any suspicion that something was wrong, that drove Irene in the direction of the aura. "Let's go see what that is. Maybe someone needs our help." Or maybe she needed to chew out her Captain for excluding her.

The source flared and then faded before they found it, but by that time they were close enough to feel the rest of the way. With the strong aura out of the way, they could feel the others it had been masking. There was one stronger than theirs, one weaker, and one on their level, the last of which felt dark and foreboding. Concerned, Irene began to hurry, scrambling up a nearby fire escape to get enough height, running across a couple last buildings-

"Huh?"

- and then screeching to a halt as she tried to process the scene they found. It was Iris, and Parthenope, and some Negaverse agent. All of them looked as though they'd been put through the wringer. What could have caused that was beyond her, and she looked at Parthenope, who seemed to be the most conscious of the three, her eyes asking the question her brain couldn't put into words.

Irene might have had less time for everything but Psyche had an endless amount of free time at her disposal. She didn't have an official life in the city, and no memories to go with it. She didn't have to go to school, and she didn't have any studying or extracurricular activities. She also didn't have any issues with talking to Irene and without ********* around for Irene to steal there wasn't any issue currently being near her. Of course, Irene might not have agreed with the topics Psyche had for her.

"Wanna go ride a unicorn? I know the perfect one." She said with an excited laugh, grabbing onto Irene's arm and pulling her back and forth like a child might when they're excited. She sounded absolutely delighted, and who wouldn't be? Lysithea was the most amazing-est, and awesome unicorn ever! Not to mention she was all hers! With such a good mood going on between them, it was unfortunate that her delight was whisked away when she felt a huge aura like a migraine in her face.

Just like her delight, Psyche's arm dropped. No longer grabbing onto Irene's arm with hers, she crossed her arms across her chest. She was clearly unimpressed by how this night was unfolding. There had been such strong hopes for riding a unicorn and now they were all but whisked away. She was clearly hoping they would just continue on but Irene had other plans.

"Ireneeeeeeeeee," she whined like a child might, her arms uncrossing from her chest and swinging wildly at her sides as she followed after her. She didn't want to help someone! She wanted to go ride Lysithea! It only took one phone call and then she could be riding around on her own personal unicorn. Sure, this unicorn looked like a person but some monsters looked like people too.

As the large aura begun to fade away, the ping of a chaos signature was there. A monster? It was definitely more appealing than whatever else was there. After all, Rainbowface taught her well. She had to exterminate the monsters in the city! With such knowledge at her fingertips, the previously disappointed senshi seemed to light back up. As tenacious as ever, she begun to run ahead of Irene.

Psyche was expecting to find what she found though. Why was Rainbowface there? Gooface? They didn't look too great, and then there was that monster there too. She couldn't decide what looked worse and she couldn't decide what to do. The well trained senshi that was told to kill the monsters wanted to go kick Labyrinthite in the face but the best friend forever of Ellie Spectre immediately wanted to help her friend.

So many choices. Life was so hard for Psyche.

With Irene staring at Gooface like she wanted to eat his face, Psyche found herself staring at Labyrinthite. Was he the cause of this? Her nostrils flared, and as if a kick to the stomach wasn't enough, Psyche attempted to kick Labyrinthite in the face before rushing over to Rainbowface. Monsters had to die but Iris was clearly more important at the moment.

"RAINBOWFACE. UP UP UP."

It wasn't fair.

It wasn't fair that the basic level senshi could stand while he and Iris were grounded. And to add insult to injury, the senshi of tar kicked Labyrinthite hard in the stomach. He let out a strangled cry, curling into himself and clutching his stomach. His head was spinning and so was the roof beneath him.

He wasn't going to stay conscious much longer.

His thoughts had been nothing but; KillKillKill until then when it switched, mechanically, to SurviveSurviveSurvive. It didn't help that two other energy signatures popped into the area and he groaned at the thought of back up arriving for Iris.

It wasn't fair.

He didn't get to think about it long, because backup had arrived and there was yet another foot flying toward him. This time, this time he managed to protect himself. Sorta. Psyche's foot connected with his arms and nicked his forehead, breaking open the skin. He hissed, immediately reaching up to check for blood. His fingers came back sticky and he cursed, pushing himself as he looked over towards the gathered senshi.

"This isn't over," he muttered before using the last of his energy to teleport home.

Her heart.

She could hear it. It was beating rapidly, despite how slow everything around her seemed to be going. If she were feeling a bit more like her usual self, she might have made a sarcastic remark about getting a physical to check on that heart issue.

However, it wasn't something to joke about now.

She could see Labyrinthite moving forward, slowly approaching, his eyes locked upon her. He wasn't looking at her, but instead focused upon her like she was some sort of goal. Every pained step he took felt like one step closer to danger, And she couldn't do anything about it.

Iris couldn't even move without risking her henshined state.

She briefly felt relief flood into her lungs as Parthenope managed to intervene (in the slow pace pained race to move onward) Labyrinthite's path. The blonde could breath slightly easier, and within moments, that relief only seemed to grow.

Two auras approached, though Iris couldn't even afford to turn to see who had joined. It was only the momentary blur of silver that hinted who could have possibly joined.

And just like that, Labyrinthite's aura had vanished.

It didn't even take two seconds for Iris to collapse forward, her form shifting to that of the blonde tomboy she ran around as everyday. She no longer had to concentrate on keeping up her powered form, and no longer had the will to stay awake now that there was no threat.
