Alice cracked some eggs and set them to frying before she looked back at Edgar. Then she considered him, her hands deftly continuing their work without the supervision of her eyes. This was not one of the Chosen who had landed on her doorstep when he had first been given the dubious privilege of his new lot in life. Those, she took in, cleaned up, and for all intents and purposes acted as a halfway house for - mostly free of charge. This man, she had still taken in and cleaned up, though he did not seem to need any time to acclimate to anything. He just needed time to heal after his latest mad venture.

Edgar clearly lacked common sense, but he did not seem a decent sort. Well, he would have to be, in order to be chosen.

Alice traded more than she sold her gifts, and right now she was not in any particular need of coin. All the components she needed to make a talisman, she collected from the forest. All it would cost her was a little time and magic. Fool he may be, but the hedge witch supposed that he was deserving of at least this bit of kindness from her.

"Very well," she agreed, and then looked him straight in the eyes. She was about to ask him for something that most Chosen would be completely unwilling to do. "If you let me work with your totem, I can give you the strongest protection available."

The smell of frying eggs filled the cottage and reminded him just how hungry he was. But he stiffened at her next words and felt his hands reach involuntarily for the totem he wore around his neck. Never before had anyone else touched it, and Edgar had always been inclined to keep it that way. Partly because there was no one he trusted enough to handle it, and mostly because he could hardly handle the thought of it breaking and Dardanos disappearing forever. The very thought set stones in his stomach and a sinking feeling in his heart. He would be nothing without the buck, lost and alone in a world that seemed to want no part of him anyway. He frowned.

Noticing these thoughts, Dardanos left his investigation and wandered over and fixed Edgar with a look that the Chosen had seen many times before and that he knew was meant to say, Not nothing. Remember what you are?

Edgar managed a smile. "Maybe I'm a king," he conceded. His background and heritage had been a mystery since he had learned his lord father was not, in fact, his father, and Dardanos had made sure his Chosen knew that it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Edgar stroked the buck's nose. Was the risk worth it? Did they need that protection?

The buck snorted softly. Yes. It was worth it.

Edgar bit his lip and slowly, reluctantly, he lifted the totem by its chain and pulled it out into the open.

Alice ignored his strange little comment and instead waited for his response. She was not disappointed. He seemed willing to work with her. Of course, she would be having a few words with him after the charm was finished about the dangers of handing a totem to a hedge witch. Honestly. It was easier to break magic things with magic than through mundane means.

Regardless, she did not bother reassuring him, either. The words of a stranger were meaningless. It was his choice to trust her or distrust her as he pleased. Instead, she told him, "Because it is tied to him, it will offer some protection for your Dardanos, as well."

Turning around to toss the vegetables and chopped ham into the pan, Alice added, "You may hold onto it until after breakfast. I can start then."

Within minutes, two helpings of omelet, fruit, and juice was set on the table, ready to be eaten. Rather than stand on ceremony, the hedge witch simply sat down and instructed her guest to "Eat. You need to at least start repairing that abused body of yours."

There was still some reluctance in his nod, but the mention of protection for his Guardian seemed to make up Edgar's mind more solidly. He would work with her, though of course, he would not relax until the totem was safely back in his hands unharmed. Beyond that, there was little he could do but take a leap of faith and trust that she would not hurt either of them. Dardanos seemed to accept that Alice was harmless and that was enough to reassure Edgar somewhat.

He would have said more, but the appearance of omelet, fruit and juice sent other thoughts from his mind and she didn't need to tell him twice to eat. "Thank you," he managed to say before digging into the food eagerly.

It was delicious, especially to his empty stomach, and he could tell with the first bite that the food would disappear within minutes. He could feel Dardanos tsk at his graceless manner of eating, but Edgar sent the buck a look. What would you know, Don? You do not even eat.

Alice noted with approval that Edgar's appetite was healthy. Of course, between his hunger and her own reticence, breakfast was a very quiet affair. It was also rather quick, not that Alice minded. The less time was spent eating, the more time there was for other things - like her latest commission.

After a quick cleanup, she collected an assortment of herbs and miscellany and set them on the table. Somewhere in all of this, Hecate reappeared from wherever she had disappeared to, apparently aware that her services were soon to be required.

Once satisfied with her collection, Alice looked at Edgar. "The totem, if you please."

The reluctance returned once breakfast ended, and he would have changed his mind had Dardnos not given him a firm nudge that stopped his words from coming out. Trust your Guardian, Edgar told himself as he slowly handed the totem forward, gaze fixed upon it as if watching it would protect it from harm. That was as much as he could do though, once the totem had left his hands, and seeing it with someone else left him feeling somewhat sick to the stomach.

So many what ifs pounded in his mind. What if he had made a mistake? What if something happened? What if she made a mistake? She was hardly more than an acquaintance, after all.

Sensing his Chosen's anxiety, the buck grunted and nudged Edgar again, this time a little less firmly. Dardanos had always been possessed of a tough exterior that belied the patience and understanding he had inside, but Edgar knew the buck as well as any and the nudge seemed to do its job in reassuring him.

I do hope this will be worth it, Edgar thought to himself and to his Guardian, to which Dardanos replied in the affirmative and Edgar assumed the buck meant that it would be without doubt. So preoccupied was he in the fate of the totem - and subsequently his Guardian - that he hardly noticed the grimalkin's sudden reappearance.

Once the small, stone-hard piece of magical wood was in her possession, the hedge witch set to work. As she had explained to Edgar, a personal wars was not a short process.

First, Alice examined the totem more closely, using her own power as well as Hecate's magic sense to glean the unique qualities of Dardanos's totem in particular. Then, she had to select the best herbs for blending the particular wards she wanted with Dardanos's magic and Edgar's person. Of course, the herbs had to be ground and mixed just so, pausing every now and again to pass a hand over them and mutter something under her breath. Finally, she poured the blend into a curious little pot and set it alight. She covered the pot with a porous, metal lid and hung the totem on a hook above where it was quickly surrounded by the fragrant smoke wafting through the lid.

Just when it seemed that there could not possibly be anything more to the process, Alice set her hands palm-down on either side of the little pot. Hecate sat on the table directly opposite her, tail curled elegantly around her paws. Nothing seemed to change at first, but soon the faint glow of Hecate's eyes intensified and the air itself seemed to tingle. It could not have lasted very long - no more than a minute or two - but the magic was palpable.

Then the grimalkin blinked, licked a paw, and ghosted off of the table. The moment was over and the feeling was gone. Alice withdrew her hands, but left the totem hanging in the smoke.

"Best let the it be until the smoke runs out," she explained to Edgar. "It helps the wards set. Then you may have your totem back."

Not quite of his own volition, Edgar tensed. Part of him seemed to expect the totem to crack at any moment and for Dardanos to melt away into nothing right before his eyes. All the fears he might have had concerning that day, the day when Dardanos would no longer be beside him, were concentrated into those few moments and he found himself gripping the edges of his chair anxiously.

As the smoke began to waft, the buck came to stand behind his Chosen, reassuring Edgar with rhythmic, warm breaths at his shoulder. They could both feel the magic hanging in the air, everywhere and nowhere all at once, and the glow in Dardanos' eyes seemed to intensify in those moments. Because Edgar did not seem to understand the magic as instinctively as his Guardian did, Dardanos projected the scene to him, a vivid image of the smoke boiling out of the pot, and it seemed to Edgar as if he could almost see the magic puffing out.

He returned to the present when Hecate flitted off the table and the enhanced image slowly faded from his mind as Dardanos turned to snuffle at something else. It took Edgar a moment to ensure that the buck remained as real as he had been moments before, and his hands slowly unclenched from his seat. "Thank you," he said a little shakily. "That was quite surreal. Though I suppose I ought to be less shaken by the experience." He was accompanied by a magical buck after all, and he had read plenty on hedge witchcraft. The literature was admittedly nothing like the real experience, though.

"And once they set?" He asked with interest. "Do they simply remain? Is it possible to break them?"

Alice wore a faint smile - not a common expression for her - as she began cleaning up the excess herbs and tools. "Not many witness such blatant hedge craft preformed before their very eyes. Some surprise at the experience is not unexpected." His astonishment was admittedly gratifying, and perhaps she was feeling a little bit smug at his obvious appreciation of her skills, as well.

As she put everything in its proper place, Alice considered his questions. "With enough time, effort, and power, it is possible to break anything," she admitted. "But the beauty of using the totem is that the wards are now tied directly to Dardanos's own magic. So long as he lives, so shall they." If some of her self-satisfaction bled into her voice, well, who could blame her? It was a brilliant piece of magic, if she did say so herself.

Selfishly, perhaps, she allowed herself another moment to bask in her success before sitting back down and leveling a stern look at Edgar. "My intentions were honest," she informed him. "But you should not be so careless in the future. A strong hedge witch with ill intent could as easily have placed a curse upon your totem. I imagine she might even be able to break it, though that would be no mean feat."

She narrowed her eyes at him as though she suspected he might snatch the totem back right then and there. "Let the wards set, or they will be weak and fade. After that, I suggest you not let it leave your hands again."

He recognized the privilege he had had of witnessing such magic, and appreciated it all the more for it. For someone as hungry for knowledge as he, watching Alice work was unequivocally satisfying. Some things had to be felt, after all, not merely read about in books. Being drawn into the Wardwood in search of the perfect totem was one; this was another.

"That's good, then," Edgar said, happy to learn that the wards would feed on his Guardian's magic. "Because you're going to live forever, aren't you?" He added to Dardanos, rubbing the buck's face when he came to rest his nose on his Chosen's shoulder. Sometimes, Edgar wondered if Dardanos had not already lived several lives before and become wiser with each subsequent life. The buck seemed to understand things and know things without ever having learned them.

This moment was one of them. The buck had recognized somehow that this moment demanded some trust that Edgar was not always willing to give. And whether that had truly paid off, they would find out in the days to come, but Edgar suspected that it had. He scratched at the base of Dardanos' antlers while nodding in agreement to Alice's words. "I worried perhaps you might do that," he admitted. "But my Guardian thought it was a leap of faith I needed to take. I think he was right in thinking it, and at least now, I won't have reason to put his totem into anyone else's hands."

As challenging as it was to leave the totem sitting in the open, Edgar stayed his hand and contented himself with simply watching as the smoke engulfed it.

Alice kept her expression carefully neutral at Edgar's profession. Live forever? Perhaps in the spirit world, they may, but a Guardian's fate in the mortal world was not so pretty. With luck, a Guardian and his Chosen would live a long and fulfilling life and together, they would die when the human had reached old age. If a Guardian was not so lucky, he would be linger on after his Chosen's death, running wild and perhaps half-mad before he slowly faded away. This all assumed, of course, that he did not die fighting in the wars for which he was created.

"Then he is wise," she said. "And you will never again be forced to take this leap of faith." Not to say that there would not be others, but few would be as precarious as this.

Allison settled back in her chair, content to sit and wait for the wards to set.

I forgot to quote in Ed/Raj, but I think we could finish that one?

Their imminent involvement in one magical war or another became more of a reality every day. Death at the hands of the enemy was less of a macabre nightmare than a looming threat. Edgar would count the two of them lucky if they escaped with their lives, though he would hardly have been surprised if they wound up among the fallen. The idea did not scare him terribly; casualties of war were a reality and it terrified him less than the idea of not having Dardanos with him anymore.

He had read everything he could find on the Guardians of old, and had learned more about Guardian lore than perhaps even he realized. Living forever, he knew, was impractical but he liked the way it rolled from his tongue and hinted that he would never have to lose his Guardian. Forever, of course, was simply as long as they could be together. And that was enough.

"And you?" He asked after moments of silence spent watching the totem and the smoke. "What of you and your grimalkin? They will have need of hedge witches like you when the war comes."

Her lips twisted into a complicated expression, a mockery of a smile that was bitter and wry and self-depreciating all at once. What of hedge witches, hmm? A question she had been asking herself for some time. Oh, Alice would do what she could, there was no doubt about that. It was expected of her, after all. The White Lady had been a sentinel all these centuries, but now that the wait was over, it was her duty to follow through with the vows her ancestors before her had made. The dubious honor of the call to arms had fallen to Alice.

However, things were never as simple as they seemed. In this instance, what troubled her the most was not the looming war itself, but the Queen. There had been no indication as to what use Her Majesty would find for her hedge witches. Assuming she had any. The Chosen - named Wardens, now - had a clear purpose. They were the warriors. But hedge witches? Those whose blood held traces of spirits? In this, the Queen had been silent. Still, Alice would do what she could.

"I will make use of my skills where I may," she told him. "I will give aid to any who are willing to accept it. Though not all will be so receptive as you have been." Hecate, of course, would accompany her. It did not need saying.

He nodded ponderously at her response. No doubt this was a complicated process for hedge witches, many of whom had skills that were inapplicable to war. How would they be treated? Would they be recruited anyway and forced to fight a war they could not help? Or cast aside while the Wardens went down in history once again? Of course, the Queen herself had not said much other than to declare war. They had all of them been left in the wind, for better or worse.

"Ah, well if they refuse your help, then you cannot blame a fool for dying," Edgar said. Sometimes, when people refused to make use of the resources right before their eyes, they couldn't be helped. Those moments made him wonder if some were born to survive while others were not, but he knew he ought not be the one to make that sort of distinction. It was a theory though, and he had found some books on the issue as well.

"At least when the war does come, Dardanos and I will have less to fear thanks to your skills."

Such a blatant disregard for the well-being of fools and bigots startled a laugh out of Alice. It was a joyous sound, and surprisingly free for one who was often so brusque. "Now there's a fine way of looking at it," she said, clearly greatly amused at his philosophy. It was one she just might take to heart. Of course, as a healer, she did try to help people despite herself, but she could hardly stop someone who was determined to do himself harm.

At his compliment, the hedge witch bowed her head slightly, her features still lit by a quiet, but genuine, smile. "Then I have the comfort of knowing that at least two warriors will not be joining the fray without some protection," she told him with a nod to Dardanos. For indeed, it was gratifying to know that she could be of service in a more tangible sense than simply lending her home out a way-house for the newly-Chosen. Though she never said as much aloud, Alice worried sometimes if she was doing enough to help.
