"You've got quite the stamina, Del.. If not the speed, atleast you have stamina, which in the long term, can be so much better than speed." He said once the foal had calmed down a bit.

Stamina? maybe that's why his parents always seemed surprised when they found out how long he spent training each day. "Thanks," he mumbled. But... "What good... is plain stamina?" He wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but he wasn't an idiot. "Strength and stamina together are good when plowing, and speed and stamina are good for running. But just stamina..." What good was that?

Brise was silent for a moment, regarding the foal before he began to speak. "Once upon a time there was a hare who, boasting how he could run faster than anyone else, was forever teasing tortoise for its slowness. Then one day, the irate tortoise answered back: “Who do you think you are? There’s no denying you’re swift, but even you can be beaten!” The hare squealed with laughter. “Beaten in a race? By whom? Not you, surely! I bet there’s nobody in the world that can win against me, I’m so speedy. Now, why don’t you try?”
Annoyed by such bragging, the tortoise accepted the challenge. A course was planned, and the next day at dawn they stood at the starting line. The hare yawned sleepily as the meek tortoise trudged slowly off. When the hare saw how painfully slow his rival was, he decided, half asleep on his feet, to have a quick nap. “Take your time!” he said. “I’ll have forty winks and catch up with you in a minute.”
The hare woke with a start from a fitful sleep and gazed round, looking for the tortoise. But the creature was only a short distance away, having barely covered a third of the course. Breathing a sigh of relief, the hare decided he might as well have breakfast too, and off he went to munch some cabbages he had noticed in a nearby field. But the heavy meal and the hot sun made his eyelids droop. With a careless glance at the tortoise, now halfway along the course, he decided to have another snooze before flashing past the winning post. And smiling at the thought of the look on the tortoise’s face when it saw the hare speed by, he fell fast asleep and was soon snoring happily. The sun started to sink, below the horizon, and the tortoise, who had been plodding towards the winning post since morning, was scarcely a yard from the finish. At that very point, the hare woke with a jolt. He could see the tortoise a speck in the distance and away he dashed. He leapt and bounded at a great rate, his tongue lolling, and gasping for breath. Just a little more and he’d be first at the finish. But the hare’s last leap was just too late, for the tortoise had beaten him to the winning post. Poor hare! Tired and in disgrace, he slumped down beside the tortoise who was silently smiling at him.
“Slowly does it every time!” he said."
He waited, his mind reeling after pulling the tail he had only heard once from Aila when he was a foal. He hoped that Del got what he meant out of it without him having to explain, but he was prepared to explain if he had to.

Deldragan's eyes widened slightly as he was told the story, quiet as he listened. Unlike Cedo--and he assumed Dio, since he was always teasing him about it--Del liked stories. He understood things better through stories. And this he understood, though his mind kept trying to undermine the meaning. "Slow and steady wins the race..." He was quiet for a moment, looking very deep in thought. Then he grinned at Brise and added, "Unless fast and steady keeps his pace."

Brise grinned and nodded his head, proud of his little brother. Not many foals his age would have understood what Brise meant, but Del did, and that said something else about his character. "Not only that, but how many do you think are going to underestimate you because of your speed? It is true, you are not a sprinter, but you are better at long range. Whoever you are against, will go as fast as they can for as long as they can and will tire out long before you, and you will easily be able to overtake them, and beat them." He said, making sure that Del had completely gotten his point. "See what I mean?"

Deldragan's steely gray eyes lit up at the stallion's grin. Brise hadn't gotten mad at him. In fact, he'd gotten a smile--a big smile--out of his half-brother. It wasn't really something he was used to with his siblings. He nodded his understanding, hesitating before speaking. "Hey, Brise...?" He averted his gaze, embarrassed. "Thanks..." One day and Brise was already in better standing with him than anyone but his parents. It was kind of sad, considering how many siblings he had, but it was reality. They just didn't understand him. Brise... Brise did, something even Damir and Cecelia had trouble doing sometimes. Neither of them had been the youngest of... well, a lot of children. There were his five litter-mates, Mona and Kamryn, Brise and his siblings... and those were only the ones he knew of.

Brise shook his head and stood up. "Del.. you're my brother. I will help you when you need it. Just keep your chin up and look for the silver linings." He said, motioning for the colt to get up as well so they could return to his mate and their dad.

"You're the only brother that treats me like this." Deldragan slowly pulled himself to his feet, his gray eyes turning steel hard again. "The others are all... suffocatingly protective. And Dio's... well, Dio." It was hard to describe the sheer joy his hornless brother seemed to get out of tormenting him. And the others just couldn't let him fight his own battles. If they caught wind of even a whiff of a fight, they were up in arms around him. Not only was it a hindrance, it was humiliating! Del got even more taunting from the other foals because of it. They said that Del was too weak to even fight his own battles...

Brise lightly nudged his brother. "They don't know what its like... and I do." he said, before going over to Reiko, who was in some sort of conversation with his father, and nuzzling her warmly. "Would you like to go settle down for the night? I'm exhausted and I'm fairly sure you could use a rest as well." He suggested warmly.
Damir grinned at 'his boy' and excused himself, turning to Del. "Did you have a nice talk?"

Reiko smiled and nuzzled him back. "That sounds wonderful," she replied just as warmly. It had been a long day...
Deldragan looked up at his father and nodded, moving to his side and leaning against him. "Yeah..." It was one of the best talks he'd had with a sibling since... well, he was old enough to talk.
