Miroqi’s last, ‘It means a lot to me that you did this…’ stabbed like a sword through his heart. How had he gone so long without knowing? They had been friends for years after all. Miroqi had always flirted for him for as long as they’d known each other. Sure, he had done similar with others a few times, but it had never been anything close to how he’d treated Mencari. He bit his lip, trying to keep from crying. It was Miroqi’s fault! Who the ******** goes around flirting with folks they would never in a million years be attracted too! It was cruel. Malicious even! He came to a shallow pool. It wasn’t always here. Normally heavy rains made it appear, then it evaporated again if there was a good dry spell.

His reflection on the surface caught him off guard and he sobbed once, before, trembling, he lowered his head to the water to drink. Maybe the water would help him calm himself… maybe.

The weather wasn’t quite cool enough for her comfort but it was overcast and she hadn’t been able to stretch her legs properly through the entire summer. She’d descended from the mountain mainly for a nice stroll and a refresher on the region. This wasn’t the main region she patrolled for her winter hunts, but it was always good to branch out. Her home base was plentiful, but there was no point in hunting so exclusively in one region that locals would be scared away.

Naturally, she would always do these patrols in her feral form. Few people seemed to know the difference between her when she was like this and any other bear who may be wandering the woods. She paused at a shallow pool to drink and watch the surrounding wildlife. She stayed quiet and still, wondering which creatures would fail to notice her, and which would head in despite her presence while keeping a watchful eye.

Still, it caught her somewhat off guard when a full grown stallion stumbled up to the pool without even noticing her there. He didn’t even look up, he just stared at the ground the whole way. When he reached the pool and sobbed, she grinned.

“Oh~ My dear. What might the problem be?”

His head jerked up, revealing his tear stained face to her without even thinking about it. There hadn’t been any sounds of someone approaching, but then again. She was just sitting there as still as a rock, and looked as though she had been sitting there for some time. Again, it was he who was the oblivious one.

He bit his lip a bit harder. A tooth nicked at his skin and he flinched, and as he turned his head down he saw a drop of blood spreading into the already murky water of the pool. It shocked him enough to get his head clear though. He took a deep breath, and looked back up at the stranger.

“I didn’t see you there. Sorry for imposing. I thought I was here alone. Clearly I was wrong. I’m always wrong!” he shook his head. “Sorry, sorry. I’ll just be on my way.”

As he spoke and fretted away she got up and approached the pool. He was worried, and skittish, but not because of her so that was just fine. The blood falling from his lip caused her to involuntarily sniff at the air, trying to catch the scent of it. Luckily for her, he didn’t seem to notice that gesture. It could have so easily ruined the game.

“Oh, no~ No, no. You’re not inconveniencing me at all. In fact, you look as though you could use a friendly shoulder to cry on,” as she spoke she stepped into the water and began crossing the pool. Her feet sloshing in the water as she closed the distance between them. “Why don’t you just sit down there and tell me what happened, hm?”

This was too easy, but it would be nice to have something warm and soft in her belly. A reward for her long patience. She’d nearly reached the far side and the stallion still hadn’t budged. When she felt she was close enough, she lunged for his throat, shifting back mid lunge in an attempt to close that final distance.

It did strike him as a tad strange that the bear had chosen to wade directly through the water, but it didn’t alarm him any. Strange folks did strange things every day. Besides, he was a predator in his own right, dangerous enough even for a bear of her size. It wasn’t until she reached the close side of the pool that he clued in that something was a bit off.

When she lunged he knew, for the first time in his life, what it must feel like for his prey. His muscles tensed as he reared, desperately kicking at her. He twisted as he came down scrambling in any direction but toward her.

Her jaws snapped shut on empty air and his claws grazed against her chest. It didn’t hurt at first, but soon small beads of blood would begin to show in her fur.

She landed, then turned bounding to dry land to pursue the stallion. There was a sweet moment she thought she would have him for sure, but then he vanished.

Mencari scrambled up the first reasonably sized tree he saw. Claws dug into the bark as he ascended the trunk, then he took a moment to orient himself before choosing a branch to walk out onto. It was sturdy enough to support him for some time, and there was another branch near enough that he should be able to jump there if he needed.

Huffing, he lay down to watch the walker below.

It didn’t take her long to figure out where he’d gone. Up, straight into the damn tree. She growled, then began hauling her bulk up behind him.

He waited quietly for her to reach the first branch, then got up and leapt to the nearby tree. She roared in frustration, then let go to follow him over. This time she tried slamming against the tree first, but it was too old and sturdy. It would never shake enough to bring him down.

Again she climbed, and again he moved to another tree.

“You can’t run forever. Come down~” she called. “I’ll help you. I promise I’ll put you out of your misery.”

Standing there in the tree it was almost tempting just to let go and let her take him. It would be easier and less painful than facing Miroqi again.

As he continued to run though he got to thinking. Miroqi had to have known what was happening after all! He always said just the right thing just when it would work him up the most. There was absolutely no way he hadn’t aware of what he’d been doing. What the hell had he expected? Oh, well I’m attracted to mares Miroqi! Oh, Mencari! So am I! It’s a good thing neither of us fell in love!

He shook his head. It had been Miroqi who had ******** with him. Why should he be the one to go?

“You’ll get bored before that happens,” he said. “But, I can tell you where to get an easier meal.”

She paused, “Why would you tell me something like that? And just why, would I be so foolish as to listen?"

“Because you could smell him on me. He frequents these woods, I’m sure I’m not the first thing around here you smelled him on. The scent will only get stronger as you near his home. And do you know what? He’ll be arriving just as the sun sets. He almost always does.”

She huffed, trying to get a good smell of the area. There was nothing here, but she had smelled the scent of another on his coat. Still she stayed by the trees, chasing him from here to there until twilight neared.

Her belly rumbled, and with a final growl she gave into her greed and stalked off in the direction he’d indicated, shifting back into her feral form to better disguise her approach. Her sense of smell wasn’t as great as he gave her credit for, but it wasn’t terrible either. She would be able to smell the spot.

She would have her flesh, or she would seek revenge.

Mencari waited until she was well out of sight, then took off through the trees, trying to put as much distance between himself and the walker as possible.

Somehow, the whole event didn't seem real. He was near certain he'd wake later, next to Miroqi, and realize the whole ordeal had been a dream.

Miroqi picked his way home, slowly. His heart was heavy with the pain his best friend had gone through, and unintentionally caused him. He hated this, hated what had happened tonight. He had tried to eat something, but he couldn't. The food tasted like ashes in his mouth from the misery that had occurred here.

He began to cross the glade near his home, when he paused, finding himself looking up at the sky for a moment. Bah! It was almost sundown, and he was not wanting to be out much longer! He had best hurry.

She hurried, glancing at the sun every so often to keep track of her position. If she was late she may be able to catch him sleeping. Early was better though. She enjoyed watching her prey for a little bit before ambushing.

It was a great surprise, when she was passing by a clearing, and noticed a second stallion hurrying along. She slowed, sniffing at the air. That was him. This simplified things somewhat. She would follow him back, wait for him to settle.

She crept along, doing her best to keep pace with him while remaining silent. Her unfamiliarity with the terrain proved to be a challenge, and soon enough she faltered and stumbled on a loose rock.

She picked her self up, faking a limp just in case he came to investigate.
