Guard roll to beat: 6 The guard watched them go with a puzzled frown, eyes lingering on F'itz in particular. After a few moments however he shook his head and went on his way, you got all sorts of weird ones coming in these days.
As the group moved onward and down the tunnels narrowed and they passed fewer folk. No longer part of a crowd the group was exposed to greater scrutiny from the people they did pass as they tried to navigate the twisting corridors that led deep into Benden's lower caverns. Instructions- As we only 4 people, not the 14 that signed up, the total needed by the group's d10s is reduced to 100

Total: 35
Waving a casual farewell to the guard, she moved on without a backwards glance. Inwardly she was tense, alert for every eye that passed their way, but she forced herself to keep her eyes on the path ahead. Glancing around and meeting those curious eyes would only serve to attract more attention.
After some consideration, she took a side corridor that seemed to be leading somewhat downward. The wher eggs were likely to be relatively deep within Benden, right?

Xanha wasn't sure where she was going, at this point. Other people seemed to have a better idea than she did, but she couldn't stop the hunch to her shoulders, the awkwardness that she felt as she walked. She was as far out of her element as it was possible to be, and she had nowhere near the experience she'd need to succeed at this.

The eyes on them felt sharp, unfriendly. F'itz brushed his mind against Brumath's, seeking some comfort in the contact. As they came to a fork he paused, uncertain now. "I don't know which way we should go," he admitted once he was sure they were alone. He hadn't spent much time this deep down in the caverns since he was a boy. Even if he had frequented the area, how was he to know where they kept their wher clutches now the beasts were so well regarded?

"Hey, you lot! I don;t recognise you!" A boy of about twelve heading up towards them paused, a bit of a grin on his lips. He had a sack slung over each shoulder, and had paused in the action of putting a dead glow into one of them. "What're you doing down here then? You lost or what?"

"What she said," Kleos agreed with a jerk of her head to her companion. "Piss off and get on with your job will you?" Had that been too much? Shells she hoped not! Maybe it wasn't, the child looked surly but not as though he thought her reaction was out of the ordinary.

The boy pulled a face but moved off with his task, though he did keep glancing at the group over his shoulder as he moved off.
Anyone familiar with the smell of whers would be able to tell they were close now. It was not an unpleasant smell, not really, but the tunnels were definitely beginning to smell musky with the beasts' presence. In the dim light it was hard to see any great distance and hearing sharpened. Was that the click of claws on stone up ahead?
It was a woman who rounded the next bend however, not a wher. She looked surprised to see the quartet and hastened forward with a frown. "Hey, this is a restricted area you know!... Wait, are you here to try out as with the gold handler for the clutch?" Looking the group up and down the woman appeared mildly sceptical about this possibility. "You're not supposed to come down unless you've been cleared by the council, you can't curry favour by meeting the handler first in person you know."

Claws. That was definitely a sound of claws up ahead. What if the gold wher was guarding the clutch when they got there? It was a possibility that Etasha had considered, but at the same time... Now that she was within the narrow twisting corridors, she wasn't sure she'd be able to put the wher-fighting techniques she'd been trained on into practice. You couldn't go for a wher's blind spot if the wher took up the whole corridor and you couldn't get around it.
The woman with the knife definitely seemed more suspicious than the prior guards, and Etasha ducked her head with an apologetic smile. "Sorry, ma'am. We weren't out to trespass or curry favor or nothing. Just wanted to... you know. Get a peek at the clutch. For the betting pool?"
Wherever there were eggs, there would be egg betting. Etasha was reasonably confident that this was a universal constant among both whers and dragons.

Somehow, this woman didn't seem to be as easy to fool as the rest of them would have been. And when Etasha stumbled over her own words and stammered out an awkward excuse, Xanha balked. "Sorry, Ma'am," she said quickly, ducking her head and already turning away. "Must've taken a wrong turn."

And with that, she turned on her heel and started walking, briskly, in the direction she was fairly certain they had come. Xanha was rubbish at navigating underground, but it was the best she could do at this point. Coming had been a mistake.

"Hey, you stop!" the woman chased after Xanha, boots thumping heavily on the ground. As Xanha turned back however (accompanied by the rumbled party) a small passage way they had passed by might catch at her attention and, within, a gleam of golden hide.
By accident or otherwise, Xanha had found the wher clutch. The question was, would the group now try to do what they had come here to do, or would they flee? The woman was coming up behind them and the wher stirred in her lair, but there was no sign of anyone else this deep down. Instructions PCs: 30HP, 1d4(+weapon modifier) attack, 1d8 dodge PCs are equipped with bandages, which heal 3HP. Using a bandage takes one action, and you can bandage other players. - Wherholder woman: 25/25HP, 1d4 attack, 1d8 dodge - Gold wher: 120HP 1d12+3 attack, 1d4+1 - The longer the PC stay and fight the more eggs will be destroyed in the chaos! PCs get initiative!
