"Wow," Gnat commented, impressed with the view. She stepped up to the edge, toes nearly dangling into oblivion.
"I didn't even know there was a river out here. This is really nice." Beautiful, was probably an apt description, but that would clearly ruin the tough-guy exterior she had (not) accumulated.
"Oh, sorry. Let me help," she offered, reaching for the basket.

"It kinda comes through, I wouldn't drink from it or anything, Fear residue and all that." He pealed off the grass and brush-stained jumpsuit and straightened out the clothes he had carefully picked out for the occasion. His nicest remaining pair of brown suit pants, ironed crisp and neat, and one of his remaining old sweater vests. He had stopped wearing them for quite some time- it was far too easy to accidentally ruin a good set of clothes in his line of work, and at some point it occurred to him they were the last thing he really had from home. At least of any emotional worth.
He wanted to feel like himself today. And with his hair tamed back and parted neatly, if a bit mussed by their hike, the vest and simple shirt, he almost did.
"M-make yourself comfortable!"

Gnat tried to hide her embarrassed blush when she saw what Jerry had on under the rather underwhelming jumper. It wasn't like she'd really packed anything nice - but she felt underdressed.
"You look nice." She paused. "I er. Kinna underpacked," she mumbled nearly incoherently.
She cleared her throat and concentrated on staring at her shoes really hard.
"So uh. What'd you do, like. Before here?"
Probably something nice, judging from the clothing. Maybe he was like, a doctor. Her mom had always said to marry into money - although she probably would also say not to sign up for secret military organizations based in the Bermuda triangle.

He blushed at the compliment, trying to hide his expression as he pulled out the sheet and spread it out across the moss before unloading the plates and setting out the sandwiches. They weren't exciting, they weren't toasted, but they did have some sort of meat and cheese in them. This was accompanied by a Deus brand can of juice with cups.
"I um. I was almost a teacher, ahahaha. I don't think I really had it in me, though."

Sandwiches.
Gnat's stomach gurgled loudly. She had skipped breakfast, and it was showing.
She tried to ignore it, flopping down on the sheet and kicking her legs out. "What were ya gonna teach?"

"QUANTUM MECHANICS!" He suddenly proclaimed before laughing nervously at his own joke, "Nah, nah, elementary school music. I majored in music-therapy, ahaha. That um. Would explain-" He patted the body of the guitar he had set the guitar down on the sheet beside them.

Gnat fell silent again, awkwardly. She vaguely wondered what it would be like to have life experience.
And then she blurted out the first question that came to mind. "Are you really a recoverin' alcoholic?"

His face went white. "UM." He had forgotten about that proclamation. And he hadn't even had the ring as an excuse for that tidbit. Oh god that ring.
"W-woo-what about-about... What about you? Did you finish school?"

"Nah." She drew her knees up to her chest.
"I was workin' on a bachelors, but uh. Well. I came here instead," she finished lamely.
"So," she began, deflecting, "that woman -" which was perhaps annunciated a bit harshly - "that were hangin' all over my brother, she seemed to know you pretty well."
Gnat gazed at him cheerfully, obtuse as ever.

Gnat rolled over onto her stomach, proping her chin up on her hands and kicking her legs in the air.
"Friends, huh? Yeh, I think her an' Tuck are friends now, too."
She snorted, and helped herself to a sandwich.

Jerry fell quiet, carefully measuring out their drinks before offering it out to her. His face was bright red now, making his scars stand out like peppermint swirls. "I um. Hope you like guava. It's uh. What I could find without anyone noticing me."

Gnat was becoming dimly aware that she was being kind of awful. What were you supposed to talk about on dates, anyway? She took a sip - it wasn't too bad, whatever guava was - and tried to make amends by changing the subject.
"So, uh. What's your like. Favorite movie?"

His face was still flushed as he busied himself with his own drink, shifting from casual at-ease confidence to a timid sort of calculative prey-animal on the picnic sheet. "Singing in the rain," He mumbled. "I think I know every song by heart. They have it in the library here, you know. Do you think I'm weird?"

Gnat considered the question.
"Well, yeah."
She scratched her nose, and put her drink down, rolling onto her back to stare at the sky.
"Everybody's weird." She tucked her hands beneath her head. "Do you worry about it alot? Bein' weird, I mean."
