"Useful," C'tis grinned, "I should pre-write sick notes myself. 'Hungover bad enough to kill a gold dragon. Will not be in today. Send help'. I'd have to borrow Sassy to send them though until I get a flit of my own." After chuckling at his own joke and taking a sip of klah C'tis made a 'humm' noise and nodded. "Well, I can use the flight excuse too. I'll get Mal to send word once the lazy sod wakes up... and people can make of our mutual absence whatever they like." A day off sounded nice even if he didn't technically need it s such but it had been Mal's first victory, first chase come to that, so he was probably entitled to one day to get his head on straight again.

"You totally should. I can have Sassy grab one of mine for you?" Her eyebrows rose again, Rochelle unable to stifle her bright grin. Rochelle stretched out carelessly, ankles crossed one over the other where they thunked on the floor. "Whatever, people can think what they want. Shards, they probably already do. It's not as if we aren't seen in public all the time and we don't know exactly where each others weyrs are on a regular basis. Not that I mind, I'm just pointing that out."
She shrugged, lazy, and finished up her meat roll. Rochelle licked her fingers clean like a proper lady, peering up at the ceiling with squinted eyes. "We'll have to wait for them to wake up, I guess. Before we go. I'm not sure how else we'd get there. Shaff."

"If you'll fetch him here I'll write one," C'tis replied with a small shake of his head. "Better that it's in my writing, and signed by me and everything. Hopefully Kleos won't get her noble knickers in a knot over us not being there." So wingleaders went he supposed the crimson rider was okay in his book, but only because she was a crimson rider rather than another bronzie.
"Mmmh, well, I'm sure we can occupy ourselves. Mess around with crafting stuff, cards, whatever," he added with a shrug. It was nice just to get to spend a bit of time with her, things had been a bit busy since graduation with settling into wingrider duties and so on.

"You really do have much better handwriting than I do," Rochelle agreed, yawning into her hand. The brightness of being awake started to dim once she'd established that he had no dirty love affair going on and food started to settle in her stomach. The klah kept her feeling warm and comfortable and, relaxed, she tapped her boot gently against his bare foot again. Sassy appeared with a squeak, the little blue decked out in a floppy pink hat tied about his head. He warbled and landed on C'tis' head, a little bit of pencil and bare paper clutched in his upper claws. "Eh, I'm sure she'll be fine. She's had Flights too - 'least, I assume so. It's not really something I think about much."
She wrinkled her nose, shoulders slouching as, unbidden, the thoughts of Kleos mid-Flight came to her. Sassy chirped gleefully, scooting down C'tis' shoulder to be more in range for pencil and paper grabbing. Wasn't he the bestest flit? yes he was! Yes he was! "Ugh - ugh, the mental pictures, stop. Guh. I vote cards, see if I can finally win something decent against you. Got a deck around here or should I send Sassy once he's done with this bit?"

"Part of being a Harper," C'tis commented absently as he took the paper and pencil to scribble a note in an unnecessarily loopy hand; let the ponsey lady deal with ponsey handwriting! Smirking a little he passed the paper to Sassy, now actually taking a moment to eye the hat he was wearing with a snort and a shake of his head. "I'm still baffled by the fact that he likes things like that," he observed.
He really did wish he had a flitt of his own. If he'd kept that egg he'd meant for himself when he'd given those ones to Aleck, Roche and Becka he would have got a crimson which even meant the potential for more flitts but noooo, he had to feel sorry for Aleck's confused half dead father and give it away. How many did the old b*****d have now? He could have given him one of the eggs he got!... Though insisting at the time he hadn't wanted it anyway probably hadn't helped there. Still, the healer could have offered.
"Anyway, I've got a deck here somewhere," C'tis scowled a little with lingering annoyance on the subject of flitts and got to his feet. Stretching and scratching the back of his neck he headed over to a small chest in the corner and crouched down to rummage though it.

"Mmhmm. That and the ocarina, how could a girl resist?" Rochelle grinned, her eyes following Sassy as he jumped into the air and then blinked between to go trill at Kleos with the message in claw. He liked the silly woman with big words! She never said mean things about his hat. Rochelle stretched out in the chair, a lazy sprawl, and smiled, languid. "He likes being pretty. Don't go judging flits on their clothing preference, C'tis. They don't judge you."
As it often did, C'tis flipped through his moods like dealing a hand at dragonpoker. Rochelle's eyebrows rose up, her expression unchanging. She unclipped one of her earrings, aimed, and tossed it right at his back. Plenty of earrings were in still and she had more available at her own weyr. It didn't matter if she got rid of one or two.
"Okay, what crawled up your nicely shaped a** and died? We were talking about our awesome day off and then you stalk away all grumpy. I have more earrings. I can pelt you with them."

The small light object smacking into his back caused C'tis to look around with a deeper scowl. "Hey, don't do that! Throwing things at me doesn't put me in a good mood." When he was already in a good mood being pelted with things was all in good fun, but when he was pissed off it only made things worse.
"It's nothing important," he continued in a growly mutter, picking up the earring before going back to looking for the cards. "Nothing you want to know about anyway," he added, feeling petulant and spiky. "Here, cards." Pulling them out C'tis replaced the lid of the box, straightened, and slouched back over to Rochelle. "And I believe this is yours," he added, dropping her earring onto the table, though only from the height of a couple of inches.

C'tis didn't appreciate tings being tossed, Rochelle disliked being ignored. Throwing things at him assured her that he wouldn't be able to ignore her. Rochelle made a face at his back when C'tis turned back to the card search, silent until he returned. He earned himself a dirty look when her earring hit the table with a clink, rolling on the hard surface before settling. She plucked it up and popped it back into her ear, grumbling.
"How about you let me decide what's considered important in my world? You getting all pissed off is important because it's distracting and this is supposed to be a relaxing fardling day," She sounded grouchy, huffing and sinking lower into her chair. "Is it because I said you had prettier handwriting? It's true. I'm not going to apologize for what's true."

"What? No. It's... it's stupid." C'tis pulled his chair out and flopped back down into it, plonking down the deck of cards before taking another swig of his klah. "It doesn't matter," he repeated with a shake of his head, still scowling somewhat and hunching his shoulders in a recalcitrant manner.
"I'm being stupid." You didn't get to go around regretting having given out presents, especially to people other people you knew liked more than they liked you and doubly so when they'd been so... yeah. Rochelle would think he was stupid and selfish for wanting that red firelizard for himself, so pretty and loyal and obedient.

"There you go again, telling me what does or does not matter," Rochelle rolled her eyes and slouched further to toe off her shoe. Bare feet pushed against C'tis' shin, a nudge more than a kick, and gentle at that. "If it didn't matter to me I'm be ignoring your sulky a** right now and cutting the deck for the game as my delicate and tiny fingers are best suited for that."
She wriggled her fingers to demonstrate, pierced eyebrows arched expectantly. "I mean, yeah, you're probably being stupid but you've listened to me freak out because this blue on the bauble didn't turn out perfect or, oh s**t, there's the tiny Healer, I want to murder her face. You only tease me a little. That's friendship. Now spill, or I may steal your klah. Last thing you want is my germs all over your grumpy."
Hanging out with Bereck: it meant she knew what germs were. It was silly things she liked to know.

C'tis sighed and poked Rochelle's shin in return, his angry fading to vaguely sulky. "It is stupid," he repeated, "but fine." How did he phrase this without sounding like he was having at go at the healer? Maybe he should try to get on with the old man too, Rochelle and Aleck might like him more if he got on with Bereck. Probably the old man wouldn't want to know though, thought his son and Rochelle were far too good to be associating with some 'ruffian'. b*****d, he ought to-!
What? He'd just made all of that up in his head and was pondering what to do to the healer about it? That was not the kind of thing decent, non-vicious people did.
"I'd just... like a firelizard. And I could have had one but I gave it away, and now I'm bitter. Of course I wanted one myself, but I'd just given you one and Aleck one and then he woke up and.... Well, yes." C'tis scowled and crossed his arms defensively across his chest. "Happy?"

He'd been holding that back for a sharding Turn.
Rochelle blinked, eyebrows still up, and she leaned in the snag the deck. True to her word, she cut it quickly, fingers efficient and clever on the bits of paper. "Being nice sucks sometimes," she said as she did so. Rochelle shrugged and glanced at him, smile wry. "It can suck a lot. Everyone wants nice stuff, it's not a bad thing. And it's only a little dumb, teeny tiny."
She held her thumb and index finger apart to demonstrate, squinting down at it. "The only thing a little dumb is that you didn't say anything before. There's no reason not to get one. We will as soon as more crop up and they'll attack everyone."

"I've been looking," C'tis said dismally, "but they're expensive and... I didn't want to make a fuss." Shrugging his shoulders C'tis looked down at the table top and started picking at a splinter. "And, well I couldn't ask you or Aleck or anyone to help me get one because I'd claimed I didn't want one. I didn't want to look stupid. Bit late for that now. I just... I don't know, I felt bad for you and Aleck and... yea." He still remembered the way the old healer had smiled when he slipped the egg into his hand, claiming he'd got it specially for him. It had been a good feeling, but that didn't mean he didn't feel jealous and bitter now.

Rochelle rolled her eyes and started to distribute the cards, taking a minute to actually plan her words. Finally she just shrugged again, head tipping up to grin at him.
"To be fair, you only said that to the three of us. Bereck would be pleased you finally fancied the idea of a firelizard, Aleck's not going to say anything, and I know your diabolical methods of friendliness," Rochelle thumped the remaining cards on the table and settled back in her seat. "No one that matters know and the ones that matter don't think you'd look dumb."
Another shrug. She looked through her cards with a hum. "We gat paid now, wingriders and all that. And we didn't get too wild and crazy over namedays this year. It'd be good for Sassy to have a friend."
As if on cue, the blue popped in with a squeak and a small ketle of freshly brewed klah. He plunked it on the table with a 'prrrt!' and wriggled.

"Well... I suppose." C'tis pulled his cards towards himself and smiled a bit. It was actually good to have said all that now, more to the point good to have discovered that Rochelle didn't think he was an awful person or completely stupid. She was great, she really was. Pretty good at defusing him, funny, snarky, pretty.... Sometimes he still wondered if she might be interested in him, but she was friendly and tactile with just about everyone she knew. It sucked, it really sucked, but friends was better than nothing.
Pushing his fingers through his spiky hair C'tis yawned slightly and reached over to give Sassy a scratch. "Good boy Sassy."
