Over a hundred? That wasn't a promising sort of number, at least not when he could count the potential allies he'd met on one hand. Let alone that he was not much above legal draft age. Historically, he was willing to bet the feeling was mutual to the poor sots that got to go to Normandy. Only they were in a foriegn country and had boot camp. He got to stay home and so far it was sink, find a floaty tossed by a passing swimmer, or figure out how to doggie paddle lamely.

And while he watched very, very closely as she demonstrated, boy did he have a lame punch when he tried. It didn't matter which kind. There was also the problem that his thumbs were inside his rolled fingers, which was a good way to break your own digits when punching. "This feels really awkward."

"You've been doing this for four years? How can it even last that long?"

Maia watched him and almost missed how his hand were, she only caught it on the last punch making her nod at his statement. "That likely because you've made a very awkward fist." She opened her hand palm toward him and closed it into a fist still facing him, her thumbs clearly visible. "See, try it like this."

She stepped back into her stance once more, "watch," and demonstrated the punches again three for each, quickly movements. She done it a lot and didn't really have to think about it so much, having had training while in the BMC to fight properly.

"Try again and don;t get too frustrated if you don't take to it right away. It takes practice," she said before nodding and frowning slightly. "Time flies, four years came and went so quickly that I barely realized it at all. The war has also changed several times. When I first came about we were all looking for the moon princess, who I believe is dead and currently doesn't appear to be of much use to us."

"Ah...." Thraen gave a succinct nod, looking at switching his hands after worrying his fingers once. Trying again was the work of a moment- less awkward technically, though certainly not any shade of natural to him. Practice, indeed.

"Dead?...********* didn't mention that...what makes you think so? Is there no line of succession? It IS a monarchy, right? Someone has to hold the crown, then."

"That's better," Maia said softly giving a small laugh, "*********, huh? She awakened me, but I digress there is Sailor Chibi Moon her daughter, who is younger than me I think. I've only met her once and and I'm not all to sure about where she stands in all this. I would assume she holds the crown, but its complicated. We do not know much about the moon princess or queen whatever you want to call her. I do know looking for her didn't do us much good."

She stopped for a moment making sure she had his attention, "watch," she said again before demonstrating a very basic kick with her right leg. Once, twice, three times before she motioned for him to try. "Be careful of your balance."

She gave a quick stretch before going back to the prior topic, "as far a the crown in concerned we've discovered at least three of the current senshi were royalty and there might possibly be more. Only time will tell. I'm not really sure how come about, but maybe one day it will be more apparent."

None of that sounds particularly promising at all, but I can't tell if the disappointment is with Maia or this....'chibi moon'. What do you mean you 'assume' she holds the crown? Its a monarchy. Dissent of leadership just means there's more than one rightful claimant vying, not that there's a gap with everyone milling around and not even a steward. Either someone is the heir or they aren't. Maybe the answer would be better found going straight to the source- this chibi moon, and asking her about the state of the political sailor environment. Or one of these...other royals. Either way, it didn't appear any of them had Maia's allegiance. The trouble with nobles, really, in the feudal system- a monarch could never be entirely sure to have their support. The business between Stephen and Maud came to the front of his mind, particularly.

But they weren't having a civil war within themselves, from all parties as he'd heard. The problem was with the Negaverse. The problem about fighting. He should be kicking. Thraen focused on her second and third demonstration kicks, and set his jaw. Speaking to his own prospects, "Can he walk and chew gum...."

The good news, as he tried, was that he didn't fall on his a**. The bad news was that the likelihood of him actually connecting or doing damage if he did was dismal. " 'One day' that hasn't come in already four years? It doesn't sound likely. So who calls the shots? The cats? How do we know how to fight our enemy?"

Maia wasnt trying to disappoint Thraen, not at all. She just didn't entirely know how to explain, she had lost faith in the moon queen sometime ago and the royalty, well she didn't see much of any of them. She didn't often think about it. They didn't have a leader and that was that and so she just tried to offer guidance where she could.

She gave a small encouraging smile at his attempts and motioned for him to continue practicing. She frowned at his question and shook her head, "No youre right it doesn't, but one has to hope that it will come elsewise what are we doing all this for."

She frowned her face up even more thinking and feeling that this little training session wasn't particulary successful on the information front. "No one really calls the shots so the speak. Cats awaken up, but most of them leave us on our own until we need an upgrade. Some times large all senshi meeting are called, but it doesnt happen very often. As for knowing how to fight the enemy you learn through experience. Like I said early, I seek out senshi to help train and offer knowledge to, as much as a can."

"Do you feel comfortable with the kicks? If so we can start the short spar," she said softly.

Thraen squared his feet back to the ground, instead of lamely attempting to kick and keep his balance at the same time. The answer to his own sarcasm seemed to be 'just barely' , so he was glad he wasn't actively jawing on gum.

"Please. Trial by fire seems like it might be the only hopeful way for me to start convincing this bag of bones to take this seriously. " His muscle sjust felt tight and tired and uncooperative. ""Two hit to win', you'd said?"

He didn't have high hopes for his chances in this, but he wanted badly to learn. "Don't go easy. The burnt hand teaches best, and this'll give me as good an idea as I can safely get of what's coming."

Maia nodded firmly and decided that despite all the confusion she may have unintentionally caused him, she was grateful for his willingness to try as well as his willingness to listen. She thought maybe there side could really use someone like him, that would ask more question and maybe get more answers.

"That's right, two hits to win and don't worry I won't go easy on you, though I also wont flip you right on your back first thing and I can do that."

She stood back and took her stance before motioning for him to start, as she often did. She didn't like to attack first and she'd also forgot to instruct on blocking though that was a bit more instinctual than the rest in her opinion. She hoped he wasn't relunctant to at least start, he didn't seem like he would be. She wanted to for once avoid the take me seriously demonstration which often involved the other face planting.

The classroom was a place where many cultural conventions were abandoned in favor of the one necessary duality- that of mentor and student. She was the learned teacher, whether she was a beautiful girl, wearing frilly clothes, or looking like she was about as far from a soldier as a strawberry was different from a avocado.

He adopted the stance she had shown him, took a deep, readying breath to clear nervousness and tried to maneuver around. He shifted from the face on angle- the point of stances and defenses seemed to follow that from the face on a persons reaction would be fastest, and their defense the best. Military histories always talked about flanking, so certainly it could be applied to one-on-one combat? If he could even hit.

It would be an insult to her teaching not to try his best, so he did, trying first to get to her side to punch, aiming for her shoulder. It was something that wouldn't be crippling if it did hit, and not startling or meanspirited in a spar as aiming for a nose or cheek.

Maia watched as she moved, moving with him not wanting him to be able to get out of her range of sight. She was impressed by his attempt and happy to see she wouldn't have to teach right off that yes she had every intention of actually hitting him.

The punch to her side didn't land, instead Maia span and shuffle off to the side continuing to circle back around. "Good job, keep it up," she said even though he hadn't hit her. He could still learn from that and possibly adjust. Still it was a good attempt and she felt he should be commended for it.

Maia was quick and light on her feet as she moved with an air of confidence that noted how long and who often she had been doing this.

She was surprisingly quick and deft on those ridiculous shoes she had to wear as part of her uniform. He hoped it was necessity that had spurred the skill, and not that she went around day in and day out wearing similar by choice of fashion. It did terrible things to the calf muscles to-

No, that was being distracted.

The natural 'training' next would be to go for a kick. ' Look ma, I learned this first and this second' sort of deal, and he wasn't going to buy into that at his age. He was better with punching and they weren't at a good angle to try kicking for his relative unskilled aim. He went for a short, quick jab at her forearms- hurting the blocking appendage might open up a more favorable target.

Did Maia where thigh high heeled boots all the time? Of course not, but she did where heels often more often than not. Still she believe her ability to balance in just about any shoe came from dancing pointe for years. She could of course be wrong, but it was what she liked to believe.

She dodged the next punch having caught it out of the corner of her eye, literally shuffling to the side just moments before it would have connected. She could feel a small swoosh of air at the miss. "Better," she called out even though he hadn't successfully hit her and decided to give a bit of retaliation.

She jumped to his side and spun into a quick kick aimed for the back of his knees. She used enough force to down hit, but not to injure him, she hoped. She didn't want to hurt him at all, but at the same time this had to feel real in a way. New senshi had to learn to defend themselves, everyone did because the negaverse certainly wasn't all talk.

He almost felt elated at the compliment, excepting his reason chided him- it's too early for high hopes. Its a start. It's all new and all a beginning.

And sure enough, the next thing he knew he was down on knees and wondering exactly how he'd gotten there before his brain put the sting behind his knees together with the sting of the pavement against the front of the same joint. "That's one of two, right?"

"Do we pick up from here, or reset to stance?"

Maia stopped at the question and shook her head softly, "don't stop, never stop. In a fight against a negaverser once your down they will keep coming at you. Even though this is a spar you get up and keep going."

She stood back and motioned for him to get up, "still you are very new at this so, reset your stance. The more times you get into it the less you will have to think about it."

She waited for him to get ready, "this time I will come at you. Dodge and try to counter. If you can't get out of the way don't worry we can always spar again sometime and most other's are willing to spar to. I'm usually in Destiny City Park if you need me."

She gave a nod and rushed at him, at a decent pace and threw a punch at his abdomen.

He did 'dodge' the punch at his core, but only in the loose sense of jumping like a startled, Halloween cat and landing a foot back. His 'counterattack' was limited, having made distance and a strange angle, and being a little shaken to suddenly, and in a real (even if controlled) sense having a person trying to attack him for the first time in his life- this was no youma or mirrorwraith. She was trying to help him, but facing something like himself instead of being helped by them was vastly different. Different then creepy monsters devouring energy.

He tried a kick, finally, but completely misjudged her direction, angle or velocity and it went wide perforce.
