Tuck waited, holding his breath as he braced himself for her charge.

...and then he was holding his hand over his eyes, shading himself from the dull sun as he watched the arrow sail off into the distance. He let loose a low, baritone whistle as the arrow disappeared before turning back to grin at Heidi.

"Well, short stack, maybe we should call it a day. You drink coffee? We could catch some lunch and talk about how amazing we are."

Tuck braced Herryk's hilt on the ground, leaning against the topmost part of the axe.

"I'unno about you, Heidi, but all this failure has got me awful hungry."

There was a faint blush of embarrassment on Heidi's cheeks as she watched Tuck watch her arrow like a UFO. She did hope the arrow didn't hit anyone, she'd hate for its magic whatever stuff to be like...traced back to her..what if she got in trouble? Oops.

"Sure, I drink coffee sometimes. That sounds pretty great." She grinned, idly plucking Matilda's string again. "I am pretty dang amazing. I bet I could tell stories that'd blow your socks off, dude." Heidi spoke shamelessly as if what she was saying was just pure fact. She finally let Matilda unsummon herself, rubbing her shoulder and stretching out her arm to make sure it was still all good. Hey! It was already feeling better! Awesome!

Thanks, Matilda!

You are most welcome, young scareling.

At Tuck's mention of failure Heidi waved a hand, giving him a small 'bah!' of disagreement. "S'not failure, we just need more practice. That was my first time using Matilda's charge, would've been pretty awesome if I'd mastered it on the first try. Just means I got somethin' to work up to though." They were just trainees, it made sense things would be like this. As he'd said earlier this was why they practiced!

"I like the way you think," Tuck chuckled jovially, desummoning Herryk with a flourish. He probably looked ridiculous, but at this point he didn't care. It was nice to make new friends, and he truthfully enjoyed the playful banter that he shared with Heidi.

"You're right, y'know. Ain't no shame in failure, so long as you learn somethin' from it." He gave a very serious nod, twisting the silver ring that rested around his finger.

"You wanna grab that coffee now and wow me with some stories about your glory days, or you gonna hang around for that other dude that was gonna stop by? He's yours, by the way. I got about half an hour before pod duty."
PostPosted: Wed May 01, 2013 2:51 am

"Thanks, dude. I like the way I think too." Heidi replied with a shameless grin. Failures and mistakes were just a part of life. It would be boring if you got everything right on the first try! "So does Herryk still think I can't handle what you throw at me? Look, my arm's already feeling better. That's so cool!" She turned enough to show Tuck where he had cut her arm, but all that was left was a bit of dry blood that had bled down her arm from her movements and a tear in her coat. If it wasn't for that it would almost be like she had never been injured. Heidi felt like a freakin' super hero or something.

Hm..wait for that guy or go get coffee. Heidi took out her phone and sent off a quick twitter message for the guy who wanted to challenge them. "I'unno if you can handle my stories, Tuck. I make the Odyssey look like a Disney fairy tale. But coffee sounds good, you can tell me your stories instead." Seemed like a fair deal to Heidi.

"He thinks you're badass."

<Herryk did not say such a thing.>

"You surprised him, to be honest." Tuck grinned and shrugged, leaning over to glance at the wound she'd suffered. His eyebrows lifted and that white grin grew even broader.

"Sounds good to me. It'll be nice to get off the training grounds for a while. I think I spend too much time here," he finished with a chuckle, "not that I have any impressive stories to tell."

His grin faltered only slightly, and Tuck lifted his broad shoulders in a shrug.

"Ready?"
PostPosted: Thu May 02, 2013 5:26 am

"Uh, yeah. S'cause I am." Heidi Potter: Total badass. That was her. Though it did bring a smile to her face to hear she'd surprised Tuck's weapon. "Herryk's pretty cool. At least you can understand your weapon, mine talks funny."

I RESENT THAT! Heidi just laughed.

"I don't think I spend a lot of time here. Oops.." Maybe she should fix that. Heh. Next time...after coffee. Not that it was a life blood for her or anything but it was pretty good. "I'm sure your stories are fiiiine." She waved a hand dismissively and then nodded. "Yeah I'm ready."

"Herryk kind of talks funny, too," Tuck started towards the cafeteria, broad shoulders lifting, "and he tends to call me Theodore. Only my mama called me Theodore, and she only did it when I was in a heap of trouble." He shot Heidi a wry smile, dimples flashing in his cheeks.

"I'm sure if I had more friends around here I'd spend a lot less time training. Ain't easy for me to get out there, sometimes, make new friends. Used to be, but I find the older I get the more difficult it is."
PostPosted: Sat May 04, 2013 5:29 am

"Oh yeah? How so?" Maybe it was a weapon thing! Did new weapons just speak strangely? Curious. "So Tuck, then. I'll remember that if I'm ever mad at you." Heidi teased with a smile, clasping her hands together behind her head and resting them there for now. "I've never really had any real nicknames. Not for 'Heidi' anyway, but I can bet you I've heard every possible Potter reference because of my last name." She got used to it after awhile, but Heidi would admit she was glad there wasn't a daily roll call here.

When Tuck admitted to having difficulties making friends Heidi couldn't believe it. He was such a nice guy! Impossible. "I think you're pretty cool. How old are you? I'm gonna gueeeeeeess..twentyyyy? Nineteeeeeeen?" She was just going to keep naming ages like they were all her first guess until she got it right.

"Talks about himself in... what's it called, first person? Addresses himself by his own name. And you little brat," he chuckled, shaking his head. "My sister knows to call me Theodore when she's pissed at me, too. You met her yet? She's a sun. Twins. I ain't seen her much since I got here." Tuck shrugged.

"I think you're pretty cool too, short stack, but I won't lie, I never read the books," he laughed outright, a low belly laugh that brought out the impossible dimples in his cheeks, "not enough time for all that. And I'm twenty. Birthday rolls around in the summer. I hope I have some cash saved up by then, I'd love to get away from here for my twenty-first."

Grinning down at Heidi, Tuck lifted his brows. They weren't far from the cafeteria, and the small talk was welcome. "What about you. I know never to ask a lady about her age, but, well," his eyes crinkled in a huge smile, "fair play."
PostPosted: Sat May 04, 2013 7:40 am

"Oh, you mean third person. That's interesting. Matilda talks like she's trying to be Shakespeare, thou, thee, thine...she messes up sometimes though so I wonder if she's faking it." Heidi shrugged and then have Tuck a cheeky grin when called a brat. A sister? Cool! "I'll keep an eye out for her. I haven't met many Suns yet." Ohhh but twins! That was awesome!

When told she was cool she gave Tuck a thumbs up. "Thanks, Zilla man." Not enough time? Even as a kid? What did he do for a living before this? Crazy. She was glad her first guess was right. "Awesome. When? Maybe I can get a gift're somethin'." Why not? Birthdays were fun! Did this place do anything about them?

"I'm sevent--" Heidi suddenly stopped and just stared. Wait..what day was it. WHAT MONTH WAS IT?! "HOLY CRAP!" Her eyes were wide as she held her hair on either side of her head. "I missed my own birthday! I'm eighteen now and totally forgot about it!" How was such a thing possible?! Heidi's hands dropped and now she just looked amazed. How did she do that?

"Well happy belated birthday, I guess?" Tuck's face hurt from smiling so huge, but he couldn't help it. "I spent my eighteenth birthday prepping for college. So much to do in so little time. I was one of the lucky ones, I s'pose. Slipped in on a scholarship."

They'd drawn up to the cafeteria by this point, and Tuck held the door open for Heidi - old habits die young. He'd always been the sort of fellow who did that kind of thing without really thinking about it.

"When was your birthday supposed to happen? We're gonna have to do something about that."

"Thanks. Man, I can't believe I forgot. I never forget birthdays. That's so crazy." Heidi sounded awed by her own slip of memory. Prepping for college? Huh..she'd kind of been doing that before being recruited, but obviously that wasn't going to happen. "What'd you major in?" He was twenty, right? Had he even finished college?

"Oh, uh, April sixteenth. Not sure what happened..hm." His offer was nice! What could they do? She was eighteen now so..pretty much the only thing she couldn't legally do was drink. Did she know enough people for a party? Hm, maybe a small one. "Did you have any ideas in mind?"

"Football, short stack," Tuck grinned down at her, some strange emotion glinting in his eyes. Sadness? "Didn't get much of a chance to do much else. I left after too long. Joined the Army. Came here shortly after some... well, shortly after I joined the Army."

He was silent for a moment as he escorted her to a table before moving towards the coffee machine.

"Mmm. They got movies here? I ain't got friends in high places, but I'm willing to put down a month's pay to make sure you get the party you deserve."
PostPosted: Sat May 11, 2013 2:45 pm

Whoa. Football, college, the army? Tuck had been all over. "Did you see anything cool in the army?"

Heidi sat down at the table she was escorted to, her elbows on the edge of the table and her chin in her hands. He'd gotten real quiet. How come? She was glad when he finally did speak up, grinning and nodding her head. "I've heard people talking about watching movies! I think you have to check out the movie and the player or whatever." His offer was a surprise. Seriously? But..they...really? He barely knew her!

Clearly Tuck was some kind of saint or something. "You mean it? That's so awesome of you! You really don't have to do that." The offer was really generous.

"I spent some time in Georgia and then a little more time on the west coast before I was deployed overseas," Tuck offered her a tight-lipped smile over his shoulder as he poured himself a mug of coffee. "That's about all I've seen, to be frank - found my way here not long after."

His broad shoulders lifted in a shrug as he turned back around to pour a second mug of the bitter brown drink. Tuck wasn't keen on dredging up bad memories, and his final days in Afghanistan still haunted him.

"Movies? s**t, we might have to check that out, then," he chuckled dryly as he turned to carry the mugs back to the table. He smiled as he set the steaming mug down before her, gesturing at the sugar and cream that littered the tables. "It's black, didn't add no sugar or milk," he warned before seating himself.

"And hell yeah I mean it," he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest. "Do unto others, mom always said. I'd like to think someone'd do the same for me, you know? Besides, we're both Moons. That means somethin', right?"
