For Rep the pain in his knuckles and arms was nothing compared to the twist of emotion he felt when he found himself comparing Wash to his guys. Where it didn't matter. Trying even in the face of that dark and twisted nature so tied up with all that she was and that he was. People did ******** stupid things for the sake of love, altruism that flew in the face of all ******** logic. And all it ever did was get them hurt, if there was something in the world that would make them lose to the creatures they fought, lose the war they lived, it was the ******** kindness of the human heart.

Wash just by virtue of existing made him feel small and broken, and that was what drove him to keep fighting, to try and push this spar to something darker, to break down the walls and see if what lay behind was truly as light as Wash tried to believe.

"What she has isn't a shadow." he said coldly. "It's a ******** black hole and one day, it'll suck all the ******** light right out of you and the world around her. You'll never be ******** bright enough to fight it." His fist struck the shield, but muscles weary, it didn't do half as much damage as he wished.

Tracey's delight was almost intoxicating, shadows were what he lived for, that hollow void when all hope and virtue were ripped out of a creature, nothing but a viral imitation of humanity's concept of a protector. Please.>

"It's worth it," Wash replied, slowly coming to his feet. He kept his shield at the ready. "Whatever th' cost, I'll pay it. This ain't about winnin'." Sally began to glow softly. "It's about everythin' before the end."

All those little sweet moments.

"What would you have me do? Run away, in fear o' what might happen?" He took a step forward. "No. I hate to see her hurtin', an' I hate," he spat with emphasis, "What you do to her. The way you turn her head, twist her mind, but..." And now he smiled, small and weary but satisfied. "But there are bits o' her that you can never have; parts you don't see." His smile grew, and his tone became colored with something - joy. "I love her. Sometimes it's in spite o' herself, but most of th' time..."

Most of the time, it was her face he saw first thing in the morning, her body he held as he lay down at night. Her laughter, her voice, the way she fit under his arm - how could he put that into words?

"I didn't do it to her." he said grimly. "I don't twist her mind, something else already ******** did." Life had, the time before the island that neither of them discussed but both of them felt, the hate they turned on one another not really their own but much further reaching even than that. When he hurt her, he hurt every woman who had ever hurt him, every person who had ever ignored him or dismissed him. It was practically a drug, but one there was no alternative to.

"You are ******** welcome to the weak parts of her." he said coldly and it felt oddly close to home as he added. "The side you see is probably just that ******** little girl that created the monster in her to hide behind." It was the monster he wanted, nothing else. You didn't get fame for slaying princesses, it was always the ******** dragons.

He leapt again at the shield, Wash proving a delightful sparring partner, a challenge in every respect, he couldn't dent his shield like this, but Rep was nothing if not focused in attack, he sought for other fractures to exploit.

"No, you didn't," Wash reflected, nodding in acquiescence. It was true, he realized. Rep didn't create the monster in Sasha - but he certainly brought it out.

"We all came here with baggage. Some o' it good, some not so much. I suppose I can't hold you accountable for that." He sighed. "So why bait her? Why go at her like that? Surely we all got enough problems what with the horsemen and everythin' else." He gestured at the practice field. "This is all supposed t' be pretend. We aren't enemies, we're brothers n' sisters in arms. We've all seen, done horrible things. We all got history we don't pretend to understand."

Sasha couldn't seem to put into words their rivalry - but maybe Rep could.

"Why? Why does anyone ******** do anything that seems self destructive? Why does a junkie rob his own family and steal old people's s**t? Why do people drink until they die? Because they ******** want to feel better, they want that moment were everything is ******** okay." He was bristling with anger now, tension written in every muscle. He didn't buy the excuse that they already had so much to deal with. "And the more s**t there is in the world against us, the more we need that single ******** moment where we have control. Where we win."

He didn't expect Wash to understand, the same way he wasn't sure the guys could really understand how it felt, that dark seductive place where you held someone's life in your talons and where the absolute and final decision of life or death was your choice. When your life had always been out of your hands, absolute control was the greatest hit there was. "I can't ******** speak for her, she's not here, but that's why I keep coming back, time and time again." His voice faltered perceptibly. Not a Sun, no good to anyone. "Because I want to win."

He swung again but again it glanced and the ball of self loathing and anger only grew, food for the hatred he was running on.

Wash listened quietly, letting the man bash on his shield. He'd hoped talking would slow him down, but he seemed as tireless as ever. He understood what the other hunter was saying, when he took it apart - a need to win, a need to have control. It was the sum of the parts that confounded him. Why go to that level? Why submit yourself to that kind of danger? It was self destructive, it was deadly, and it hurt everyone involved - even the bystanders.

Wash, Sally intoned softly. He'd been so lost in thought, he almost didn't notice the soft blue glow that had suffused the surface of his weapon. Why does it matter what he wants?

Because I want to know, he thought back. I want to understand this. He couldn't be this person for Sasha. It seemed all too mixed up in hatred, in danger and maybe even a little self-loathing.

It was strange, really, the anger Rep seemed to harbor. He was blessed, with two lovers who cared for him and a myriad of friends. He didn't like the man, but he found it hard to absolutely hate him, almost in spite of their past encounters. He reflected on his conversation with Jordan all those months ago, how the red-haired hunter had acted around those he loved. It was like he was a completely different person than that day in the library - two halfs forming a whole Wash's mind found difficult to reconcile.

"Is it really control, if y'keep comin' back to it?" This man, angrily beating his shield, trying to stagger him physically and emotionally. This was the same man who'd loitered in the kitchen, made jokes at the table at Thanksgiving.

Maybe the other hunter was right; maybe he couldn't understand.

The frustration only grew the more logic Wash brought to the table. It wasn't control, not entirely, he gave up so much for the anger and adrenaline. "Do you think it's ******** full control man? I mean ******** look at me, every ******** thing I do ends in disaster and it's usually tied back to your b***h." He clenched his fists so hard his nails bit into his skin. "But for that moment, the moment when I have her ******** pinned, when I'm winning, its perfect. When you live moment to moment, that's all that matters. It's addictive."

He almost wanted to tell Wash that he didn't want to be as addicted to it all as he was, that if he could quit he would. But that would be admitting weakness, and you never admitted weakness in a spar.

And as far as sparring went, he was getting nowhere. <******** THIS ******** SHIELD." he roared irritably and kicked Sally as hard as he could.

Wash knew about living for the moment -but not the kind of moments he described. It pained him, to hear those words and know they were true. To know, but be unable to help. Unable to change anything. That impotence...it was grating, a dull ache. A note of dispair.

No matter, he thought, wincing as the hunter's next blow vibrated past the protection of his shield and caused a sharp ache to race up his already sore arm. It was time to focus on the task at hand. Time to keep on fighting.

He closed his eyes for a moment, taking in a deep breath. "Thanks for bein' honest."

Without preamble, he lunged forward, letting Sally's wordless protests go unheeded. We do this my way. Using her charge against the unarmed hunter seemed unfair, somehow. He would follow the rules, like he always did. Win or lose - for him, the end didn't justify the means.

"I'm almost always ******** honest." he said with a smirk. "It's my one great tragedy." If he was a good liar he wouldn't end up in half of the ******** situations he did, unable to adequately talk his way out of anything without lies of omission and half truths. Lying directly was almost painful. "I might be a lot of s**t, but sadly, a liar isnae one of them."

His muscles grew wearier with the sheer effort of striking immovable steel each swing and he knew he'd have to change up his tactics a bit to close in for any kind of finishing blow.

All he really knew how to do was fight, and he wasn't even very great at that.

Wash nodded and continued on the offensive, swinging high and then low, shield carving large sweeps through the air. It was true, he was honest - sometimes. Was omission a lie? He supposed it depended on who he asked.

He let his thoughts drift, focusing on the fight and letting the conversation die out. It was stupid, putting his safety in the hands of someone who had every reason to hurt him, and it took all his concentration just to keep the other man at bay. Stupid and prideful, traits he wasn't aware he possessed. Too proud to say no, but not too proud, perhaps, to be knocked on his a**.

Sweat slowly beaded on his brow.

As things went quiet, it was not from lack of attentiveness, Wash could hurt when he set his mind to it, and a sizeable chunk was cleaved from his fear shield as both of them properly set their minds to battle.

But two could play that game. Rep was exhausted but not exhausted enough he couldn't rattle out a barrage of punches and sweeping kicks, less about damage and more about throwing the other man off balance. Somewhere in the relentless assault he felt the fracture of his shield.

Rather than calling the spar off, he followed this up by pouncing like an animal, throwing his entire weight into the moon hunter to try and bring him to the ground and pin him there.

"Looks like you lose." he hissed

Rep was a flurry of movement, and the less experienced Wash couldn't keep up. The other hunter landed blow after blow, until he felt the snap of his fear shield and suddenly the damage was real and painful. A pound of flesh.

The next thing he knew he was pinned to the ground.

You lose.

He tried to catch his breath, and gasped as he felt a stabbing sensation in his side. He'd probably cracked a rib or two at least, but it was hard to tell - he couldn't focus much past the visage of the hunter that loomed over him. His vision flickered in and out, and he had to shut his eyes against the pain.

"Looks like you're right," he grunted finally, carefully annunciating each syllable.

Rep's expression shifted to that mad feral grin that was all teeth and no mirth, and there was something very razor keen and feral in the way he darted his gaze across the other man. Tension ran in every muscle of his body, poised to strike at any perceived slight. Wash wasn't Sasha, there was no overt defiance or mockery in the man - but the hate was there, near enough he could feel it. He wanted to destroy everything that she valued, everything that held her together.

But the game had rules.

He drummed his fingertips across Wash's chest as if in time with some distant thought and he leaned in thoughtfully, like a predatory animal investigating a kill. The tension didn't ease.

"It's a shame she can't see you right now." he said, pressing both his palms against his ribs and leaning his weight on them, restricting his lungs. "So very human~"

PostPosted: Tue May 07, 2013 8:06 pm

The pressure hurt, more than he believed possible, and he wheezed in a few strained breaths.

"I ain't never claimed," he coughed wetly, "t'be anythin' else."

Rep leaned in closer, unnervingly close, all about the discomfort, about savouring the defeat. He wasn't allowed to kill Wash, but that didn't mean he couldn't remind him what he was dealing with, that he couldn't enjoy how passive he was.

"I don't know how you expect to ******** save her when I can breeze past you with my fists. I could do anything to you." He paused and looked the moon hunter over again, a vicious gleam in his eyes. "Would she want you still if you were all shredded to ********>
