Melvin's expression made Jake crack up.
Ok, so maybe coming here wasn't such a bad idea.
"Don't worry, I'll behave." he laughed.
He would try. Really. REALLY.
The moment Melvin summoned his weapon, Jake rushed forward, striking with his tonfa first, and then placing the handle of the left on in his mouth, he pulled out his dagger and stabbed down, the dagger emitting a crackling sound as it bit into the life trainee's FEAR shield.
With a huff, the weapons were de-summoned, and he held onto the dagger, panting slightly.
"Basically, it amplifies your attack power, but there's a drawback. It saps your energy, so unless you're extremely confident, it's best to use it to end a battle."

The attack was quick, too quick, that all Melvin could do was raise up his arms to guard himself and brace for impact. Since he wasn't expecting such a hard force, he stumbled back and bumped against a chair before holding onto the countertop, stunned.
Looking up, he watched at Jake easily continued to explain what had happened. "I can...see that. A last ditch boost that could allow a moment of escape?"
He stood up, thinking. "If that fear drain could be used in a way on a weapon to quickly drain a Halloweener to then charge up a weapon, or even drain a Halloweener to make them weak, then that information could be useful."
A bit dazed, he moved closer and looked at the dagger. "Very interesting. How much of a drain do you feel? Could you still escape after using it or be completely unable to move?"

Jake only shrugged.
"Perhaps. I prefer using it to end a battle." He wasn't much for running.
... Fear drain?
"I'm not sure if it actually... saps their power. Just kinda gives your attack a boost. I dunno, it could be the deciding factor to end a really close match. It's all about timing. If you use it too early, you only put yourself at more risk."
He remembered. He had the scar from Solia to prove it.
Melvin's question only earned a chuckle as he tucked the dagger back into his sash.
"It doesn't have THAT huge of a drawback. Just makes you more tired. You can still move and all, and I'm pretty sure you can still escape... as long as you're in decent condition and have incapacitated the opponent enough."
The latter was kinda a given.

"Oh, well that is useful, though the timing seems tricky." Melvin wasn't good with timing, though it all went down to a user's own judgement if the risk was worth the reward. A last powerful boost to get an edge in a fight could mean life and death, and if it was for an artifact, victory or defeat.
"I think I have enough information for now. I'll write my report on what has happened. If you do experience any strange side effects or find out any new discoveries when using your artifact, please text me. I'd like to keep it on file. I'd also watch out for the weapons department around here. They get giddy over anything with a blade and might try and paw at you to look at it."

Whether he meant the division (though research didn't really appropriate to anything high risk) or just in general, it was hard to tell. More than often though, it had managed to help him scrape through, the only time he remembered it backfiring on him was that match with Solia, and... he supposed that double HH battle, but that had already been a lost cause.
Jake waved his hand dismissively.
"Yah, sure, whatever. And please. They should know better than to harass a guy with a blade." Today had been an exception, but he had never been really fond of people touching his stuff, and though he wouldn't admit it, the artifact did carry some sentimental value.
