"That's what I do," Jordan replied, deadpan.

"You don't seem to ask as many questions. I guess you've just been patient this entire time then?"

Jordan angled an eyebrow at Melvin. "I don't know you well enough to ask personal questions yet. You'd probably get upset and refuse to answer me. Anyway, your behavior and what you're willing and not willing to offer about yourself voluntarily are interesting data points in themselves." The corner of his mouth tipped up a little. "You're a scientist. You know the value of collecting a wide enough range of data to construct a valid hypothesis."

"And you're not a scientist. I wonder if that means you're more selective." He said, smiling. Despite previous frustration, Jordan had his own brand of charisma.

Jordan looked back at the door to the room, then back to Melvin, and raised the other eyebrow, a little ruefully.

Melvin also tilted to look back at the door and looked back at Jordan. He didn't get it.

"Selective enough," Jordan said, letting the moment for the joke pass. It had been a dumb joke anyway. "I was recruited before I finished my degree, but I was tracking to major in psychology, with an eye towards an eventual master's and a professorial position. Soft sciences, I know, but there's some crossover."

"I see. So you have some schooling in what you hope to be doing here in Deus." Melvin was instantly on edge, and no longer wanted to be in Jordan's company. "I should allow you to console Rep then. He's a bit worried and probably needs the therapy."

"I know perfectly well I'm not an expert, but as you pointed out, there are a lot of people here who could really use some counseling. A listening ear, if nothing else." Jordan raised an eyebrow at Melvin, noting the sudden change in body language. "Is there a problem?"

"No." There was a problem, and that was Jordan alluding to that he might have been studying to become a shrink. Melvin did not like shrinks, and he didn't like being around shrinks. "Are you going to talk to Jerry about this then? Seems he was the one that snapped and needs some counseling."

"I talked to him not long after it happened." Jordan looked down into his cup, his shoulders hunching a little. "He says he just - lost it. It happens here sometimes. I've seen it before, and I still have no idea what to say to it or do about it. There's got to be something."

"I think I'll go talk to him. I need to smooth over the whole experience he had in jail." Jerry hadn't been a great help, but he at least showed up to help when Melvin called.
"I'll....ease into the conversation." He said, noting Jordan's advice.

"Good luck," Jordan said quietly. "I'll see you around, I guess." Misstep, he thought. He shouldn't have said anything about his major; it wasn't as if he didn't know personally about avoiding psychologists, carefully censoring himself and covering for Andy's occasional slips to keep them out of that office.
Melvin might relax about it later. Then again, he might not. Jordan would just have to deal with it either way. He looked at the door of the infirmary room again and stood up, pushing off the wall. Time to go keep watch again.

"I'll see you around. If you need anything while you're tending to him, just text me." He offered, and with that, Melvin turned and headed off to find Jerry.
