Merlinite was determined, at least, if not as skilled as he wanted to be. His grit was what pushed him through most of his life, when situations he did not want to be in or could not easily work his way through popped up. He was determined and it allowed him to do all the things he didn't want to do, for the sake of bettering his lot in life.
He was always digging his way up, tooth and nail. He would do that here, as well.
At her compliment, regardless of how much sincerity of oomph it might have lacked, he grinned and puffed his chest out a bit, preening happily.
He saw her switch her stance, though, and lifted his baton again. He watched her curiously, getting into the fight. Well, he had been into it from the start, so her guess ed he was just more into it. Whatever, it worked either way.
"My defense?" Uh oh. He grinned though, nodding and moving to take on a more defense oriented position, though it was not his strong point. He nodded his head, indicating that he was ready.

She at least waited until he had gotten into position before she lashed out, and there was no hesitation or pause in her strikes. Like Merlinite, Mica wasn't the type to hold back, and though she made an effort to keep the crystal away from him, she wasn't going to hold her punches. He gave her his all. It was only respectful if she returned the favor.
She stepped forward and swung the staff at an arc, aiming for his shoulders and wanting to see just how quick he was to defend. She was also expecting him to counter, to try and do what she had done and jump onto the offensive. After all, that, too, would have been completely fair.
She swung with great strength and purpose, hoping that Merlinite would exceed, would renew her hope in the Negaverse once more. Much pressure on the poor new lieutenant, but Mica would show no quarter. Not when it was her Negaverse on the line.Lithia_Brandon Sorry if it seems sort! If it is, let me know and I'll add some length to it.

Merlinite would have been glad to know she was just showing him the same respect he was showing her, but he was getting the idea that this was not the best thing for him. He was hard pressed to move in time to keep up with her, but he couldn't do much more.
Still, he tried.
He pulled his baton up and managed to block the spear, but he was late and it still hit him hard enough to push his own defense back and connect to his shoulder hard enough to stumble him.
But he didn't let it get the better of him, at least. He used the way he stumbled sideways to duck, seeing an opening as he moved under her spear and swing, lunging for her directly and swinging his baton low now, not holding back if only because his blood was pumping now. No justification or thought, just responding to instincts, and the pain in his shoulder was certainly a motivator.

It was easy to tell one self that a counter strike was possible, but it was hard to properly predict when one was coming, or where it could come from. To the lieutenant's credit, he had succeeded in catching Mica off guard, as she was too invested in the blow she managed to notice him swing low with the baton.
It slammed against her side and caused her to lean her weight towards the left, which in turn caused her foot to twist and make her lose her balance. She barely caught herself before she got more than a single knee to the pavement, but the fact that he had managed to off-balance her both made her respect for him grow, as well as her anger.
She struck back with a vengeance, actually swinging her spear around to where the crystal was faced towards her opponent, and while she wasn't going for the kill, she meant to do some damage, even if it was a tiny scratch. All the while, she tried to hide her frustration with herself. She refused to believe that this lieutenant was better than her. It had to have been the fact that she was out of practice that allowed him to get such a hit on him.
She swung her spear at an angle, meaning to get him on the arm and give him a little nick, and the growl that escaped her throat wasn't anything like the cold and collected Mica of moments before.

Merlinite was not expecting the spear end of the pole to come his way and he did not get out of the way in time. He thought he could just take the hit and he would be fine, but when he saw it was something that could actually cut him he let out a yelp of pain and surprise. He fell back, gripping his arm.
He was bleeding, he realized, as he looked down as his hand. Really bleeding. He had never really been injured before, besides little cuts and bruises. But certainly not in a way that stained his hand with blood in such a large amount before.
Maybe he hadn't thought the fight was really going to get that serious, even if he had been fighting it as hard as he could. He looked at the cut, which was deeper than he wanted, but nothing terrible.
Still, it was enough to stop him short.
He took a step back, though he was still braced for a fight. He wanted to go after her again but he was worried that she was going to run him through if he kept at it.

At first, Mica was pleased to see the bladed part of her weapon get him, and no amount of self restraint could stop the smile from creeping onto her face. It felt good to hit another being again with the crystal, to see the blood that dripped from her weapon's edge, and know that she still had it.
But the blood that was on her weapon wasn't an enemies. It was a lieutenant's. The sight of him holding his arm snapped her out of her euphoria, and for a brief moment, her careful act dropped, and there was no joy, or glee, in this bright turquoise eyes of hers. Instead, there was a painful realization, and she barely caught herself and stopped the gasp from escaping her parted lips. What had she done?
She straightened up, and the way that she brought her spear to her side, blade pointed away from Merlinite, made it very clear that she had no intention on continuing this fight. She regained her senses, but it was too late, and she tried to make amends for that by addressing the new wound. "I can patch that up for you. I was an EMT, once upon a time..."
That was her way of apologizing. She waited for his permission to approach him and try, and if he refused, then she certainly wouldn't have blamed him. Of all the times to lose her temper like that, why could it not have been a Senshi or Knight that she was fighting against? Way to make a good impression, she thought bitterly to herself.

Merlinite looked a little put out, but it was only because he hadn't won the fight, and he hadn't proved himself at all. At least, as far as he could tell. he'd done his best, but it wasn't good enough, and that kind of thing always messed with his mood. He'd have to go have a nice drink, or something, to make his day a bit better.
He huffed, puffing up his chest and then, after a moment of gathering himself, grinned.
"Oh, don't worry about it. It's just a little scratch. Shows me that I should be paying attention to the sharp, pointy things in fights like these, eh? And you're strong, much better than I am. I'm glad you took the time to fight with me though, and honored." He smiled, like the suck up he was, but at least his comments so far, at least in the Negaverse, were based in fact. The people he met so far were impressive, and they did motivate him to push as hard as he could.
He needed that in his life, it just kept him going.
He could see the hesitance in her gaze and shrugged his shoulders in an effort to break the tension.
"That was fun. I think I can get the hang of this stuff, but I'll need more help."

She may not have shown it, but she was relieved to see that he was willing to walk it off. If anything, he didn't appear too bothered by her strike and seemed to have actually accepted it, as a lesson of some kind. And that was enough to make her drop her careful facade and smile. Though it only lasted for a moment, it was still genuine, and now she felt silly that she was actually concerned for him for a moment.
Either he was much tougher than he looked, or the cut wasn't that deep and she was merely overreacting. Either way, she had no doubt that he'd survive this ordeal, and while he wouldn't have been the first to escape with his life after tasting her crystal's bite, this one was she was pleased with. His flattery may not have gotten him far with other members of the Negaverse, but it was appreciated by Mica, at least.
"Keep practicing and you'll catch up to me in no time. You're hard working and disciplined, and the Negaverse always needs officers like that," Mica said, her words encouraging even if she kept her voice steady. She didn't want to get his hopes up, but she felt that it wouldn't hurt to let him know that he had earned her respect. "I want you to keep at it. Work hard. Whatever branch you decide, do your best and nothing less. Can you manage that?"Lithia_Brandon Would you like to start wrapping this up soon?

"I doubt I'll ever catch up, but it'll be fun nipping at your heels for a while," Merlinite said with a cool smirk, nodding his head to confirm his thought. "But I always do my best, so you'll be hearing about me sooner or later, anyway. And maybe when I am stronger we can do another sparring match like this, and I'll do better."
Maybe she would be the one bleeding at the end of it, but he didn't want to make that assumption off the bat. And he wasn't sure he was keen on making her bleed, since she had helped him along his path to bettering himself and didn't exactly stand in his way to get higher up the chain. At least not yet.
So he could just enjoy her training him and their just getting along for what it was, and he did know how to appreciate that.
Even if he was a selfish brat sometimes.
"I think that's enough for one night though, if that's okay, ma'am. I think I need to rest for a bit..." he was feeling worn, but that might have been because his adrenaline was fading.

Her smile may have been taut and professional, but it was there, and that said a lot for Mica. She didn't think little of him for requesting the session to end and in fact she respected his foresight to know when to stop. That kind of discretion was highly valued in a fight and often lead to an officer's life or death in her field, and she had hope that he'd know when to call for a tactical retreat before it landed him in trouble.
What good would the new recruits be if they didn't know when to back down? She nodded her approval, looking to his wounded arm and her turquoise eyes softening for a moment. "Be sure to take care of that before it gets infected. The senshi may not carry weapons, but their magic more than makes up for that. I'd recommend working on your dodging technique."
Just as she needed to work on her temper, it seemed. Nevertheless, she was grateful for this experience, and she turned to leave. "Take care of yourself, lieutenant. Do the Negaverse proud."
Without wasting another word, she leapt onto the closest awning and to the roof, before disappearing from sight. She knew that she should have stayed to keep an eye on him, just to make sure no White Moon senshi or knights got the better of him, but she trusted that he could take care of himself. He stood toe to toe with her, so he could handle anything the enemy could throw at him. She had some renewed faith in her Negaverse now... maybe the new changes weren't so bad after all.Lithia_Brandon Then consider this my wrap up! It's been fun!
