He continued north, walking in a slow building rage.

Night had fallen, and Coll was beginning to get worried. The streets were deserted, and the only sound for what seemed like miles was of his unshod hooves hitting the pavement. "O Fates, I am sure that this is some kind of test of my manhood, but please, could I have some kind of sign? Even the stars are misplaced in this strange world..." he murmured aloud.

As he approached the courthouse, grand in its marble facade, Coll's jaw dropped in awe. "Such a beauteous wonder!" he exclaimed. Only a structure such as this could house the information I require to complete my trial... And with that, he made his way up the steps and pushed open the doors. Bending at the waist to get through, for he was nearly twelve feet tall and the door only allowed for the lower seven feet of him, the amazed centaur made his way through the building in search of wisdom.

Street lamps set up a dim lighting around the surrounding area as Athan drew near the courthouse. Luckily enough for him, as a few officers of the law strode past. They didn't give him a second glance. Either Barton never sent out a warrant for his arrest, or they didn't recognize him in the dark.

Whatever the case, Athan was glad that he wasn't about to get caught up in another crazy chase.

Initially, he wasn't going to even bother entering the courthouse. But he was treated to the image of a very large centaur stepping inside.

"Well...that's a start."

He followed the centaur into the courthouse. Unlike the larger fellow he followed, Athan had no problem stepping into the building.

Enveloped in the darkness of the building, Coll had conjured one of his trademark faerie lights and had begun exploring the rooms that he could access with the dim light floating above his head as company. Almost at once, he found the staircase that led to the basement, and managed to navigate the low ceilings until he came upon a library of sorts. "Astounding!" he mused, and quickly lost himself among the shelves, glancing at various tomes, particularly the ones on law.

Of course, it was afterhours and most government buildings closed pretty early. That would serve to explain why nobody was inside, save for him and the half man, half horse parading around with a light floating above his head.

Thankfully, it also made the guy easy to follow. The steady clacking of hooves was enough to mask his footsteps, and Athan descended the stairs without much trouble. The library was hardly what the swordsman would have considered 'outstanding', although it was pretty old and dusty.

As the centaur entered a nearby aisle, the light faded from view. Athan, meanwhile, smashed his thigh into the corner of a table.

"GRAgh!"

He couldn't shut himself up in time. Not like it mattered anyway, the loud banging noise was a dead giveaway to begin with.

Hearing a noise, Coll quickly extinguished his light and spun to face the direction it had come from. Silently, he replaced the book he had been holding and pulled out his six foot long hazel bow, nocking a swan-fletched arrow and drawing it in one smooth motion. Even with the body of prey, he still had the eyes of a predator, and he focused them on the end of the row, waiting for any sign of threatening movement. As he waited, he fervently whispered a minor spell of speed and accuracy.

((I'm out for the night, Dessie. heart We can pick this up tomorrow.))

Well, there went the only source of light. It was going to take awhile for his eyes to adjust to the scenario, but Athan figured he didn't have much time to stand completely still. His left hand extended outwards, touching up against the corner of a bookshelf. He moved his hand to the left, realizing that it was indeed the end of the row. The thought crossed his mind to search for a lightswitch, but judging by the large amount of chairs and tables in his path, he'd probably end up getting himself killed by the time he made it to a wall.

Well, there was no reason to not take some precaution. He drew his sword, and stepped to the head of the row. The weapon wasn't held in an offensive position, but instead held nearly vertical in front of his right side in a defensive position.

Still, it would be pretty hard to convince anyone that a sword that big wasn't very threatening.

A faint glow came to Coll's weapons as he completed his spell, and he stiffened as he saw movement at the end of the shelves. "Halt, on pain of death!" he commanded, albeit a little shakily. "Declare yourself! What herd do you belong to?"

He took a few quick glances behind him, and sighted some kind of closed door with stairs leading up behind it. A strange escape route, but a means of escape nonetheless. How could I have been so stupid as to let myself become cornered in such a restrictive area? Master Leal must be rolling in his grave...

There was a little bit of light further down the row, although it wasn't friendly by any means. Athan's grip on his sword tightened, and he stepped towards the light source.

"You know, threatening somebody's life isn't the greatest way to get the information you want."

It was a pretty hypocritical statement, but he didn't really consider it that much.

"I don't belong to any herd. So do me a favor and answer my question in return. What are you doing here?"

Coll took a few tentative steps back. "Fair enough. I am journeying to prove my manhood, as all of my kind do when they reach a certain age. This place seems to be a fountain of information, so I thought that I would start here."

Drawing his bow fully, he took aim at the chest of the stranger. "What have I done to you, that you would think to menace me such as this?"

"So you're trying to figure out how to prove your manhood by cruising around a bunch of old books? You'd think your people would have a manual written out by now."

Athan kept his sword held up. A natural reaction when somebody had an arrow pointed directly at your chest. Athan's eyes were beginning to adjust to the low visibility, and he could make out the outline of the centaur.

"I'm looking for some relics known as the Petals of Chaos. You wouldn't happen to know about them would you?"

"Finally!" Kit yelled, seeing Athan in the distance.

He fell on the sidewalk, panting, he just dashed... just dashed... Oh gods, just let him catch his breath. There was also another man, with a bow. Hey, he got here just in time, something big was going down. Unfortunately for him, his legs felt numb for a moment, he'll need a bit of time to get back up.

Coll glared, "No one person's test is the same as another's. Some have come back with tales of stranger places than this."

Still taking small steps in reverse, his backside finally connected with the crash bar of door. "I know nothing of which you speak of. Why do you think that I would have such an item, stranger?"
PostPosted: Mon Mar 20, 2006 12:15 pm

"Well, judging by how jumpy you're acting, I'd say I have a pretty good reason for suspicion."

Athan took another step forward, advancing upon the centaur. It wasn't a threatening gesture by any means, but if a fight was inevitable, well, he'd rather be at close range. He didn't pay much attention to Kit as he sprinted up. Taking his eyes off the centaur would probably have been the worst possible thing to do.

"So I'll ask again. Do you, or do you not know of them? They say chaos follows in their wake."

"I would expect most people to become jumpy when being stalked by a madman with a sword," he huffed. "And I have already answered that question. I know nothing of which you speak!" In one continuous motion, Coll loosed the arrow at his target and kicked the door open, not waiting to see what it hit. Spinning around at the end of the aisle, he clambered through the doorway, up the stairs and into the space behind the courthouse.
