Cait could only blink and stare at the piece of paper. It would probably be awkward to compliment his handwriting, wouldn't it? She slid the paper with Jude's name and number over. God, hers was going to look so bad next to his.
And then she turned all kinds of red and let out a small noise that sounded like a squeak. Oh god, that almost sounded like he was asking her out. Nope nope nope that wasn't happening, he had to mean something else. People didn't ask her out.
"Um, yeah, for- for safety, that sounds good." She said, staring at her coffee and feeling inexplicably relieved. "Er, do you have more paper? I can, um, give you my number."

They were awkward bunnies sharing an awkward moment; Jude blinking at her for another long moment before he stepped away to get more paper, still much too pink. Out of her line of sight, he'd rub at his face and wonder what was wrong with him, and how to cope with it. As he returned, though, he'd be more or less calm, sliding her a sheet of paper --
"I'm. Um. I'm here most days. After school, I mean." He sank down to sit, flicking open the button of his jacket in a practiced [but nervous] way as he did. "So you can usually find me here, too."

Cait sat and drank her coffee as she waited for him to get back. When he did, she took the paper, writing her own name and number in handwriting far shakier and less graceful than his.
"I'll uh, I'll drop by in the evenings. When I'm going to patrol. Er, after I get out..." Of the hospital, she nearly said, but that loomed large in her mind and she shied away from it.

"You should." He sat for a moment, turning the paper over between his fingers and watching it as he did, his head tilted to the side and eyes a bit distracted. Thinking about that 'in the hospital' thing himself. Worried, just a little bit. He folded her number in half once, and then again, and fished out a really battered old leather wallet to tuck it out of sight.
"So I know you're okay, I mean."

Cait nodded. "I'll do that, for sure," she said. She folded up his number and tucked it into her pocket - unfortunately she wasn't quite as prepared as him regarding packing a wallet.
Right then, Cait's phone buzzed in her pocket, and she flipped it open to a text from her sister - 'I'm outside, do you need me to come in?' She sent back a quick 'no,' and stood up. "Well, she's here." She said. "Thanks again for saving my a**. I'll um, see you soon!" She turned and walked out.

"...okay." Jude was left at the cafe, still floundering a bit, fingers sliding up through his hair and head a bit buzzing. Hopefully she actually would call him; it would be nice to have an ally at school, and even nicer to have one out on patrol. Going out alone seemed like a worse idea all the time.
For now, though, he'd grab his things and head the other way, off toward his own home. He certainly wasn't going back out tonight.
