Björn had chased up early. Even moreso than his usual endurance runs for a quick twenty minute warmup with his roommate before dressing in assigned marathon uniform to head down to the line. He felt fantastic. Colin had been making jokes asking where District 9 was, mixing fandoms liberally with his sci-fi nerdery. But it had earned a smile and he'd asked Colin to go ahead and write 'District 9' like a tattoo down his thoracolumbar on his back in Sharpie to be beneath the requisite tank top.
At the line, with the other contestants, he bounced energetically between heel and ball of feet. Everyone else was so much smaller! But plenty looked just as fired up and it warmed his heart to see so many interested in supporting community and fitness. This was exactly what the city needed. He couldn't stop smiling. Had anyone else from Hillworth shown up? Hard to tell not in their plaids and whites. There was the call! Setting down into a formal ready position, he spied the piles of objects in the distance. Riiiight...there'd been that bit about there being an obstacle course. He had no clue what sort of obstacles would be in the plan. He had a really high level of fitness, though, so he didn't think he'd need water or food any time soon. The blankets were way too tiny, and wouldn't really do much help for him against elements. Were they going to have to run through a street with ski-slope snow machines? That would be weird. Kinda cool. Or maybe giant heat lamps. Or maybe he was just being ridiculous.
Bandages or bungees? Either could be used to tie things open or shut at need. Or attach things. Wrap things. Bandages were less needful since he could just tear his tank into strips if he needed, right? So...bungees it was! If he could make it in time.

Sable had been up early. Well, not so much early for her. She always got up pretty early in the morning. So by now she was pumped full of energy right? Ehhh, she had let slip a few yawns here and there.
Why was she here agian? Oh right the race thing!
Her long pale pink hair was tied back in a tight pony tail so as to not hinder her ability to see. With a slender finger she pushed her large rimmed glasses up her nose and tried to stretch out the tank top unnoticeable. Sadly for her they had run out of her size by the time she had made it through the crowd, so it was only just a little bit tight. The shorts weren't any help either. At least they were the right size but even still they apparently wished to assimilate themselves with her butt so she had to resist reaching back and picking at them.
She milled around for a bit, watching the various people before her eyes landed on the large pile of stuff just sitting there. Water, food, blankets, bandages and bungee cords.
Quickly she began to analyze the items and go over their practical applications for this race. It seemed like it would be interesting for sure.
Finally her mind settled on trying to obtain the bungees. She wasn't a great climber so if she needed to get up and over anything they would be her best bet to have. Sable hoped anyway.

Mathias had made his way to the starting line quickly, already on edge for what was promising to be a rather fun and potentially high-energy day for him. Stretching at the line, he geared himself up and started to mentally prepare. You had to be quick on your feet in events like these, and as he looked around the crowd, he was sure he was in for some stiff competition.
He figured his best bet was to snag bandages - they would prove to be a good barter item if someone got injured, plus they had other applications as well if you were savvy enough. Chewing his cheek for a moment, he weighed his decision one last time before committing.
Yeah - definitely bandages.
With that decided - he worked himself up mentally and got ready to go.

Well you have your item now, hard-won and maybe it wasn’t what you wanted at first but it’ll have to do. There isn’t a whole lot of time to stop and contemplate what you’ll possibly use this for, where to store it, or perhaps trade with an envious-looking competitor though! Before you can really get your breath back from that mad scramble you hear the sound of feet coming up from behind you, surrounding the contestants from the left and right as well, with water balloon slings and super soaker guns lining the starting area.
Grinning wide one of the coordinators of the event, goggles strapped over her eyes, lifted a megaphone to her mouth. “Competitors, it’s time to run for your lives. We’re giving you to the count of ten, then opening fire. If your shirt is hit, then you are dead.” There was a little too much enjoyment in her voice yet there was no chance she was joking: they were locked, loaded, and ready to fire!

The first streams of paint come blasting out of the guns, and they’re headed your way! You can already see some becoming splattered with paint, and there’s no time to waste. Ahead, you can see cover sprinkled throughout the course. Bales of hay, upside down barrels, sandbag piles. It would be easy to avoid all the cover and just sprint through the gauntlet, but with those shooters on the side, it's also possible that you'll get hit trying. How do you proceed?
[a] Sprint as fast as you can, trying to get out of range! Crouch low and use the cover to run through the course! It’s a little slower, but safer, no? [c] Try to wait it out behind some cover. They only have so much paint, right, and you came out to get back to nature, didn’t you?

Newly adapted Space Shield blanket wrapped around him like a baby blankie, Dennis Terry decided it was time to just go for it. No risk, no reward, right? Anyway, he would rather go out in a blaze of glory (and perhaps a flurry of people falling around him first) then p***y out.
He wanted to win. Winners drove. Winners fought. Winners cheated and screamed. Winners took action.
With a hoot and a few arm flails designed to look almost innocent while he shoved his way into a pack of fellow racers, he drew his blanket around him and hurried forward. All he had to do was keep his eye on the prize, and let the others get themselves taken out of the competition. Or throw them into the line of fire himself, if it came to it.

Ian Davis came up from his roll sucessful, the blanket clutched into his hands. He still wasn't sure just what he was supposed to do with it, but he didn't have any time to ponder as one of the coordinators began to speak. They were about to be pelted. It was a nice throw to the fireballs that were in the book, though a whole lot less dangerous. He still had no desire to get hit with what appeared to be paint, at least not in an instant like this.
However, he had an idea. A brilliant sort of idea. As long as he could keep his shirt from being hit, he'd be fine, and so the teen wrapped his Space Blanket around him like a cloak. He wouldn't be able to flat out sprint like this,as he'd likely lose the blanket, but Ian crouched down, and began to move from place to place, using what he could for extra cover.
Hopefully this would work.

Akito Miyamoto was more than pleased with what he had, till he heard that mega phone, or more specifically the person speaking into it. Crap! They needed to dodge paint. A quick, real quick, glance about told him that the task of avoiding being hit with paint would not be easy. It really was looking like joining this event was a good idea, but right now he had to think on how to get away from this area without being paint spattered and thus - out. He didn't want to be out! Not this soon into the fun!
But he only had a water bottle and energy bars, and the count down had begun! Quickly he set off running as fast as he could, moving around others, and hoping to put people between himself and the paint filled guns - let them get hit rather than himself. Jumping over a fallen body he ducked his head, wanting to keep low and behind other people, as he dashed toward safety.

Delilah Masters frowned as she looked at the start of the course. Oh, this was going to be interesting. As soon as the gun sounded, she bolted for the nearest cover. That seemed like the best option, given that she'd gone for an essentially useless-in-this-situation bottle of water and energy bar. Darn, that space blanket was looking really good right then! She was definitely starting to regret going for what had seemed like a perfectly smart, rational choice...

Destiny didn't have much of a chance to think about her choice but at least she got what she wanted. When the volunteers came out and threatened to get paint all over her she frowned. OH HELL NO! She didn't sign up for this s**t. She expected some sense of realism but Jesus! No way she was "dying" just as soon as race started.
She barely had time to react before the countdown was initiated. She'd be ruthless in her pursuit of safety, of course, and she used the confusion and carnage to her advantage. She ducked low beneath the crowd and moved toward the outer fringes out of the range of the weapons. She didn't hesitate to use other people as human shields making sure her shirt was as blocked by other bodies, bushes, trees, etc as she could have it.
Bandages weren't exactly helpful in this situation but she made sure to stuff them into the waistband of her shorts to make sure they were safely tucked away. She wasn't taking any chances at the beginning of the race.

Bungee cord successfully obtained, and with minimal ruckus to work around, too! Madelyn was feeling like she had gotten off to a good start, grabbing her bungee cord and wrapping it over her shoulder and torso for when she'd need it. She wasn't sure why she'd need the bungee cord, but she was certain that if it was placed there, then she'd need to use it at some point, right?
The announcement sounded jarbled to her, but it didn't take long for her to realize what phase two was. The person next to her was immediately hit and she gave a shriek, as she ran away. They didn't mention guns! Where those real guns? WHO ALLOWED THIS KIND OF THING?
It took a second person being hit for her to realize it was paint, but that didn't make her any less weary. What she initially wanted to do was to run straight ahead at full speed, screaming a phrase that her sister fondly used when playing her video games (something about a guy named Jenkins), but she knew that could be dangerous. Just running in a straight line. No, not only would she likely be hit, but she'd exhausted herself too!
'Think, think, think, Maddy! You're the brains of the outfit!' She thought, looking around her and coming up with the idea to crouch low and use the cover to run through the course. It would slow her down, but it was a safer route, and it would mean she'd conserve energy for the horrors that were to come next. So, she crouched down, hoping that others would take the hit instead but not seriously get hurt in the process. This was all just a game, right? 'Good lucky everybody else!'

********. Now Rowan knew what the space blankets were for. This just made her increasingly nervous about what could involve bungee cords... But she could worry about that later. For now she had to get out of the line of fire.
Oh well. This could have been worse, she supposed. The ammo could have been water. She thanked the stars above she was not wearing white.

Everything had been chaos. People scrambling to get something. Grabbing, pushing, shoving. Sable Winchester was pretty sure she'd almost gotten a broken nose from an errant elbow to the face. But success was her's as she grabbed a bungee cord and somehow managed to scramble out of the fray.
But soon she found herself faced with another challenge. Grinning people with balloons and squirt guns. She had little time to catch the event coordinator's words before streams of paint came blasting towards her.
With a squeak, she clutched her cord and crouched low. Scrambling on hands and knees towards whatever cover she could find. Wrapping the cord around her wrist to keep from loosing it. Her knees scraping against the ground hurt, but no pain no gain. She didn't expect to get out of this without a few bumps and scrapes. Though it would have been the more preferred way to get out of it.

Mathias wasn't quite keen on getting hit with paint - not that he wasn't used to having it on his body or anything - he just wanted to win this race - or at least get as close to victory as he could. Wrapping his fingers tight around his bandages, he decided it'd be best to use cover if they were going to fill the air with paint.
His father would be so proud to know he'd listened to his suggestions of what to do if he ever got shot at.
Just probably not as proud as he would have been if he were... actually getting shot at.
Ducking low, he moved for the nearest cover - hoping to avoid "death."

He was shoved by someone which made him grab some bandages instead. Whatever. He would take it. Though, second guessing himself, the dark skinned man figured it would have been better to grab a blanket. They could stop a lot of things and keep him fairly hidden as well as long as he used it right. Argh, stupid thinking after the fact.
Kor was listening and waiting until they said something about counting down. Then it started. With a yelp, Kor shoved the bandages in his pockets and attempted to roll out of the way.
Bandages would not help in this situation at the moment, so he did the only thing he could really think of.

As he scrambled away from the pack proudly holding onto his bungee cords he took a moment to scan the crowd. All those spectators cheering on their friends and family. The only one who would be cheering for him was his little sister if she was here and he could just imagine how "Go Ernest, Go!" would quickly be drowned out by the giggles and laughter of those around him.
"Bah." Ernest.... or rather Dev as he would prefer to be called, cleared his head and turned back around just in time to catch the race coordinators give the rules for the next part of the game before the race was truly on.
That moment of inattention coupled with the fact that it took him a moment to register the new challenge to this race made him slightly slower off the block then he would have preferred to be. Racing straight through would not be an option but the lady didn't say nothing about usig' the things around them.
Dodging the pain and the other racers Dev dived for a barrel. Taking it down with him behind a few sand bags. If your shirt is hit... With a smile he upturned the barrel, shrugged out of his shirt, and with the barrel over his upper body, his shirt held in his shielded head he slowly made his way through the course doing his best to remain behind the other cover and runners. The visibility was poor, he could only see what was around his feet when he was on the move, but so fare so good. Who cared if he looked like a demented turtle or snail as long as he made it past this part of the race. Could he keep his shirt dry?
