Rob met the stag's look with a stare. "What?" He demanded, forgetting that he was, in fact, arguing with a deer. "Tisn't real obvious to me." Of course, Rob had limited experience with animals. His impression of horses was that they kicked at one end and bit at the other, and deer in general looked similar enough to horses that he would assume the same until he had been proven wrong. Granted, this deer in particular seemed rather more intelligent than any horse. That did not, however, mean that his hooves and teeth suddenly ceased to be dangerous.
Ollie shot his brother a glance of amusement, but Rajani had his attention how and he turned back to the conversation at hand. "I guess not," he said in answer to her question. "Guess I don't know overmuch about them Guardians though. Only ever 'eard about them once or twice in stories and... well y'don't see many deer out at sea." If it was true that they only existed to fight the Wolves, though... that meant their increasing popularity had to be a sign, and not he kind of sign he would have hoped for.

Oberon snorted at him and cocked an ear back, unimpressed by Rob's reasoning. Just because he resembled a type of animal that humans hunted did not mean he was anything like them. Of course, if the man suggested that he wanted to be bit...nah. He probably tasted horrible, anyway. "You'll have to be learning fast, then," Rajani told him. "Once she's born, she'll keep you busy." Spirits knew Rajani had her hands full when her Guardian first appeared. Of course, she at least had some idea of what to expect...well, as much as anyone could. Her mama had raised her on the old stories; she knew what Guardians were. As for babes, well, Rajani might not look like the maternal type, but she knew how to care for the young. These lade, on the other hand, probably wouldn't know what hit them. "I suggest you learn what you can before then."(( This is totally the expression he is looking at Rob with. Just sayin.))

Ollie wasn't sure how much time he had before that happened, but he assumed it was not much. There was no doubt plenty and more to learn before his Guardian was born, though he had no readily available sources to draw from. The fact he would be responsible for a rare and magical creature had yet to fully sink in, and he hadn't even begun to consider the sort of changes that might occur in his life.
"If y'don't mind my asking, have you got any words of wisdom for me, miss?" She seemed as close to an expert as he would find and, at this point, likely his only source.
Rob, meanwhile, countered Oberon's look with a deadpan stare. "Y'ought t'be less prickly," he informed the stag. "It's not healthy for you."

Oberon failed to see how being "prickly" as Rob put it could affect his health. He was a spirit creature. He hardly needed to fear illness or deterioration like mortal creatures. Only two things were liable to affect him: wolves or the death of his Chosen. If he had any say in it, then it would be the latter, and even then only after Rajani had lived a long and full life. Clearly, paying any further attention to Rob was pointless if he was going to continue spouting nonsense.
Words of wisdom? Rajani had hardly been expecting that. Most she had met were either frantic or bull-headed. Few actually bothered to listen to her. Oh, she had several choice words for newly-chosen. It was Ollie's misfortune that he happened to be on the receiving end of the gypsy's frustration at several other uncooperative Chosen.
"You can start by accepting the inevitable," she said. "Your lass is going to stay by your side whether you want her there or not. Once you've come to terms with that, you can get used to the idea that Guardians haven't come back just to make friends and you've been chosen for a reason. Congratulations. We're going to war with the wolves."

"War?" Ollie echoed, looking down at the wooden totem once again. That he would soon have a young fawn trailing along behind him didn't seem to faze the sailor much. If anything, he quite looked forward to it, though he knew neither what to expect nor how he was supposed handle it. He hardly minded the idea of sailing with a deer around, and Ollie had always been one to embrace adventure.
But war, well that was an entirely different matter. He looked over at Rob, who was frowning at Oberon, and pursed his lips. "We're not real built for war, are we?" He said, in part to Rob, in part to himself and in part to Rajani as well. "But I s'pose that's not really anything you get to choose. It's war, after all."
If there was anything Ollie knew about war, it was that it had the nasty habit of coming at the most inopportune moments. Of course, there was never an opportune moment when it concerned men who had no desire for violence or for glory and who wanted nothing more than to live a peaceful life out on the water, where the weather was the biggest concern.
"Spirit wars," Rob said darkly with a small shake of his head. "There's nothing good comes from dealings with magic."

The gypsy paused. Well. They were taking that rather well. She was not sure whether to be pleased with them or annoyed that no one else seemed to be as willing to cope with the inevitable. She settled on a vaguely displeased frown. "True enough. I suggest you start making yourselves ready, and the little one as well when she appears, else you might not live to see the end of this nonsense."
Gods knew there would be dark times before Sunderland was safe again. Even then, Rajani had an uneasy feeling that nothing would be quite the same again. Not after a war with wolves and spirits and guardians and who knew what else. Even under normal circumstances, war did things to a country - or so she had been told. One could only imagine what manner of change the coming battles would force onto the world.
Oberon snorted at Rob, somewhat insulted. After all, he was a creature of magic. However, he felt his chosen's unease and gave her shoulder a gentle nudge. He had no fear of battle, nor any doubt that they would win the war, but he loved Rajani dearly. Though he did not share her fears, he cared about them.

Rajani had a good point, and it wouldn't hurt either of them to learn a little to get them through a battle, if not an entire war. If not this war, then there would be others and nobody had ever complained about knowing how to defend himself, if for no other reason than to not feel so awkward in a scuffle.
Ollie shrugged. "Ah, well. Everyone's got t'die sometime. If it's a war what's goin' to kill me, so be it. 'Course, if we survive, it won't be for lack o' trying." He did intend to be prepared. But whatever was bound to come would come, and nobody could fight the inevitable.
He stroked the totem clutched in his hands and said to it, "You best be ready, lassie. S'not a peaceful time for you t'be born in." He could feel somehow that she would be just fine, though.
Beside him, Rob eyed the stag. "You go ahead an' tell me I'm wrong," he dared the Guardian. "We wouldn't've been dragged into this if it weren't for you lot, eh? We'd just be out at sea, doin' what we always done, not mindin' this business with Wolves." Still, if Ollie was poised to fight a war with creatures of the dark, then Rob would no doubt be with him every step of the way.

The gypsy's lips curled in a wry and not particularly pleasant smile. It seemed Ollie was a bit more like herself than she had first given him credit for. He was pragmatic. Of this, she could approve, though the idea that they all may very well die in the battles to come was not a particularly pleasant one. "I can recommend a good master at arms," she told him. "But he's inland. I expect you can find someone at sea if you prefer."
She raised a brow at Rob's argument, but was beaten at the chance to comment on it.
"We returned only to defend you. The least you can do is help defend yourselves," said Oberon. Rajani was only mildly surprised. It was not often that he deigned to speak before strangers. Usually, he did not deem it worth the effort. Or rather, he did not consider them worthy. He seemed to be simply making a point here, rather than holding either man in esteem, but Rajani suspected that her guardian was pleased with the brothers' willingness to go to war.

Ollie paused and considered the offer of a good master-at-arms. It wouldn't hurt to have the referral. Being on the seas was rough and pirates sailed the same waters, so the crew had a basic understanding of combat but it wasn't quite the same as being trained for war. "Maybe we'll be headed inland one day," Ollie answered, much as the thought displeased him. No doubt Rob was less than taken with the idea as well, but the facts remained. One day, perhaps, they would have to leave the sea behind for a cause bigger than the two of them. Even if only for a little while.
Both brothers jolted at the sound of Oberon's voice. If there had been any doubt between them of the stag's intelligence, his words put them all to rest. There was something quite eerie about hearing a deer speak, but it was as intriguing as it was off-setting. And an animal like him, that was obviously magical somehow... speech was almost expected in its unexpectedness.
"S'not like we're about to let them just slaughter us," Rob muttered, though he sounded somewhat more at ease now that he felt less like he was having a monologue with a creature that could hardly understand.

Rajani nodded. It was wise to keep some options open. One never knew where the future might lead. "Macaire Draughn," she supplied. "He lives in Palisade." Gods knew he was a sadistic taskmaster, but she could not deny that he got the job done. In matters like that, she would take results over method any day.
Apparently deciding that he was done demeaning himself by talking to such men, Oberon simply sniffed as though to say I should hope not. He shared a glance with his chosen and Rajani looked back at the men.
"If there's anything else you'd like to know, I suggest you ask now," she said. With her current mission, the days to come were going to be exhausting, she was sure. It would be best if she got some sleep in relative safety while she could. "I doubt we'll cross paths again before your girl is grown."

"We'll keep him in mind," Ollie promised, nodding his head ponderously as he considered the changes that were bound to come. "Thank ye kindly, for stoppin' to talk t'us." That he addressed to both Rajani and Oberon. It wasn't always easy to do, especially with Rob. His brother was stubborn to begin with and often had trouble letting go of arguments once he latched onto one. Convincing Rob that things were not really that bad would take some time, and Ollie wasn't certain that he would ever admit that the Wardwood was not a place of bad omens.
"Well... I s'ppose there is one thing," he said. There were many more questions to ask, but he couldn't recall them all, which he took to mean that they weren't as important. "How did you know... how to teach 'im? I mean... I've never 'ad to raise anythin' or teach anythin' 'cept those little 'uns on the docks how to tie a knot."

Now there was a question. Rajani was certain that someone could write an entire book about the fine points of raising a Guardian and still only scratch the surface. Oberon had had a nose for trouble when he was a babe, but it had more to do with curiosity than intent. Cadence, she knew, had been a right handful, rarely even trying to listen to Macaire. It really depended on the Guardian in question. Of course, it had been easier for Rajani, since she had already had some experience in child-rearing with her little sister, but it still took some experimentation.
"It depends on your girl," she told him. "Her smarts will be somewhere between a clever dog and a human child when she's first born, but Guardians grow fast. If you're lucky, she might mind you right away. If not, you'll have your hands full with her. You'll have to teach her what's ok and what's bad. You'll be her compass. Just treat her gently and she'll grow up well."
The gypsy shrugged. "As to what works, it's all trial and error. I suggest keeping her occupied with toys and tasks." She mounted Oberon in a quick, practiced movement.

"By the looks o' things, your Oberon turned out well," Ollie said, watching Rajani as she settled onto the stag's back. Her advice was good advice, he decided. There would be tasks aplenty at sea to keep a fawn occupied. If nothing else, she could keep occupied by becoming a little messenger deer, helping communications aboard.
"I'm sure we'll meet again someday though," he added before Rajani rode away. "Th'world's not a smaller place as we tend t'think it is." And thank the skies for that. It would be a terrible shame, Ollie thought, if people walked fleetingly in and out of others' lives, never to meet again.
