Ol-j-man

As the undead student bristled, so too did Red. "What do you think would happen?" She snapped, "How many would react in fear and seek to stomp it out? Would you care to have my blood on your hands?" She stared at him distainfully, snarling, "Given that your classmates were more than ready to kill me, I suspect you wouldn't mind at all if you could gain precious knowledge and experiment on the only known being that has merged with a Hunter's weapon. That has survived Insanity and seeks to master it."

The professor threw her arms out, indicating the room they stood in. "How else do you think I brought you here? That I did this on a whim?" She jabbed a finger, no, talon at him. Her hand had shifted from humanoid to monsterous, complete with a long ebony talon. "If you use your knowledge against me so help you that I do not manage to survive and find you. Your Insanity and mine is different. Your Insanity and Mine and Jericho's was all different. Do you seek to follow in Jericho's steps to cast it off? Or is it your pride? You want to know in order to rid yourself and others of it as quickly as possible and learn more from it to kill it, to silence it don't you?"

As Red spoke her fangs grew, filling her mouth with sharp points. "You seem to be of mind that Insanity is a dangerous thing. That it should be gagged and executed in the public eye so that everyone knows that it's safe and it's okay when it isn't. You are blind, boil. You do not know of the true threat that Halloween needs to watch out for, and it isn't Insanity."

She raised a taloned hand, pointing. "The door's behind you. I suggest you leave, as I have nothing more to say to thee."

He stopped cold at her first statement, feeling it seep more and more into his bones as Red spoke. For a moment logic was just a blip, an ignorable fallacy that had no place between those of the insane, in the house of the insane. Death? He didn't want her dying he wanted . . . he wanted a cure, the core truth about the disease as he had told her before. Eradicating it had simply been an assumption, because she was right: Mort had only thought of it as a disease and nothing more. Not something that could be used, or better controlled. He had been so focused on fighting something that nobody had fought off before, not without a healthy amount of luck and high risks, that he had never stopped to think there was another way.

He stared at the monstrous talon and flinched when it was pointed at him, as if expecting her to simply rend him then and there for threatening her new state of being. Red could have anyway without Insanity, but with that power--ripping portals, becoming that beast, simply surviving . . . Was that an existence? Was that a real alternative to consider? Mort disturbed himself with how quickly the idea drew his thoughts, the pure and simple idea of conquering something most feared like a magnet for his thoughts.

Bells would kill him--no, she'd kill him, bury him, wait until he dragged himself out, and kill him again three times over for even considering such a course of action. But she'd never have to fear him leaving. She'd never have to dread the countdown that led to his ruination, statue or monster. Maybe he too could control the whispers, make the disease his like Red seemed to be. He could then fix it if it got worse because he'd be in better control, with better knowledge, better tools, better everything. Maybe he was on the brink of one of the greatest discoveries about the make up of Cores and Fear. No great scientist ever went without high risks after all . . . And if he was like Red, he would be his own perfect lab rat. Dying, pain, fog corruption: he was used to it at this point. Hell, he'd have the welcome mat out and ready whenever something kicked up s**t.

Maybe they were all delusions of grandeur in the end. Maybe it was Insanity tricking him again, hastening him towards Home in its own way.

But Mort knew innately his version of Insanity was beginning to advance. He was growing desperate.

"...A-Am blind." It stung his pride more than he cared to admit to say that. "Never thought t'consider that as option, is right. Only have reacted when situation worsened, only ever adapted n' conjectured." Mort paused, gazing at the snarling teacher, and became chastened and shameful when he realized he had not been keeping an open mind about this: all paths were to be considered, not just the direct and obvious route. His shoulders slumped as he shook his head at himself.

"S-Said before: only want truth 'bout this. Want t'know more 'bout Insanity. You say each is different but . . . But if can be controlled, want t'learn, professor. If you're good, if you're in control, don't want t'mess with that," he added empatically, raising his hands in a peaceful gesture. "But m'desperate. M'scrabblin' for answers, f-for somethin' so don't become fog monster again, or statue, or lose memories. Friends n' family went through that, d-don't want them t'do it again. Would k-k-kill me if . . ." He swallowed and pushed on more steadily.

"If there's cure, will find for sake've those who want t'be free, because know some won't acclimate, will only get worse. If can find, will use for me too. But good plans have back ups, n' if . . . if is possible, professor, want to learn. Want to know if can become like you, if can control this. Make it mine." Maybe that was too bold of him to request after irritating her, but that was the level of desperation the zomboil had at this point. He'd take Red throwing him bodily into the portal in pieces if that meant she knew he had expressed interest in trying something new, even if it was impossible or a long shot.

"Please."

"Perhaps you need a new pair of ears," the professor growled. "Let me repeat myself slowly then for your benefit: I. Have. Nothing. More. To. Say. You have worn out my patience, boil. Scramble for your truths and dig up your precious salvageable limbs and truths some other time. You are far, far too late to beg and plead. Begone."

He should have kept his mouth sewn shut. Cowed, the zomboil stepped back warily, unsure if Red was annoyed enough to physically snap at him. "'Pologies, professor," he mumbled. But the idea was planted there in his mind nevertheless: a dangerous, far too reckless one, but a Plan Z if all else failed. Or a Plan B of a Plan Z.

And yet there was little hope he could get from it, for the werewolf's words haunted him: what could be more of a threat than Insanity?

He stepped through the portal, about as grim as he had been when first entering it.
