Maslin smiled as he reached for the plate, it was unfortunate that someone else was ill but that did little to destroy his eagerness to try out Kavanna's cooking. Different sorts of foods were always a draw to him. "Hmm, Lazuli eats whatever he can get his jaws around, he's not that picky." Unlike Maslin who had things he distinctly liked or disliked Lazuli viewed all food as as a good thing, although the keindred had made it clear that he could to some degree discern the varying tastes of things. "Of course he eats a lot more than a normal person too so he tends to hunt as well."
Lazuli had grown out of being filled up by a plate or two of food provided by those at the camp and would slink off to kill and devour something every few days. Sometimes, if he made particularly clean kill Lazuli would drag the carcass back to camp for skinning before hovering over it and picking the flesh from the bones. The hides were usually used by someone in the camp but on occasion were sold and the money then given to Maslin. Although Maslin did not spend it for himself, it was Laz's money but it was easier for him to go into a town than the drakein even if neither of them were welcome most places.
Lazuli gave a pleased croon at the compliment and nodded as Maslin spoke. "I can eat your food if you share but I don't have to." He was quite content just to be able to better examine what the inside of a proper house was like. He hoped that he and Maslin were able to visit Damian often, then there would be more time to see things and more magic which was always a good thing. Perhaps Damian could get his bonded to practice more and they could be the greatest peisio mages just as he would be the greatest peisio drakein.

Damian laughed as he spoke. When the plate was given to him as well, he began to devour the food, saying nothing.
"So Maslin, how are you doing? What kinds of things have you been up to recently?" Kavanna asked as she reentered the room and sat down at the table with a plate of her own. "Any exciting or interesting stories to tell?" she said, taking a bite once she was done speaking. Oh yes, it was good, but a bit too charred for her tastes. She did hope that the rest of the group liked it though.

Maslin carefully chewed and swallowed his current mouthful of food before replying. Food which was as far as he was concerned just fine and rather different from the things he had at home.Maslin was still mostly in the dark about dovaa culture and wasn't sure if this was a common dish for them or simply something from a part of Serenia he'd never visited.
"I don't live the most interesting life," Maslin admitted. It was safe and comfortable though and he liked it that way. "Mostly I do metal smithing and mechanical crafting all day. I haven't invented anything really special yet but I'm learning a lot about how to craft my own metals and how magic can interact with mechanical things." He still quite enjoyed taking things apart, replacing broken bits with better things and then putting it all back together again.
"Tell them about Her" Lazuli suggested. That was a good story as far as he was concerned.
Maslin rolled his eyes but quickly launched into an explanation about meeting Ba'shiri the fierce old Aiskala Dovaa who'd been offended that a boy his age hadn't picked a clan yet and set about fixing that. " I haven't seen her since and I guess that's probably a good thing since we'd probably be enemies then even if I want nothing to do with the war." Maslin was quite content to let other people run off and battle on the fringes of the continents or the uninhabited ones. If he had to choose though he would fight for the orderites for they were the only family he had known.
Of course that might put him on the opposite side of the war of the friends he was eating with now. They still seemed connected with Kavanna's family and Maslin would regret having to try and hurt Damian or Kavanna.

Kavanna listened intently as she finished up her food. Damian on the other hand began to speak up quick earnestly. "Wooooow~ So you work with swords and bows and maces all day?" the curious little boy chirped, sitting up in his seat, leaning over the table with a bright smile on his face.
"Dom, sit down please and let Maslin continue." Kavanna said with a stern motherly look.
"Sorry mom..." Damian said as he sat back down and quietly listened to the rest of the boy's explanation on this Ba'shiri character.
"So, you're not much of a fighter either. My husband is more apart of the war effort than I ever would be. He's training to become apart of the Order's Guard up in Ashen City. We hardly see each other anymore, but when we do, it's always a nice family get together." she said. "It's good you've found a passion for something, though." Kavanna said, picking up her plate and taking it to the sink to be washed.

" The war is not my problem" Maslin pointed out "Even if I were to fight neither side would care or acknowledge that I helped." Hybrids didn't get to be war heroes, not that Maslin was inclined towards violence to begin with. Having proved himself competent at defending himself and the caravan Maslin was now allowed to spend his time as he pleased and that meant as little fighting as possible.
He turned his head slightly to address Damian once more " I don't make weapons because their only purpose is for battle. " His family in general avoided making weapons unless a commission price was too high to say no too. While the full story had still not been explained to him it had , he had learned, something to do with his father and why he was not with them. " Sometimes I make armor though, I've been trying to work how to mix magic with it to better counter the properties of certain dragon attacks."

Kavanna nodded in agreement. It was sad that people these days were only meant for weapons of war, not anything more. Kavanna agreed that the world was coming to chaos more and more each day. If only the war would cease, that would be a fine day. But of course, not one that was in their visible future.
Damian's eyes widened with a bright smile. Armor? And mixing magic? That seemed like fun! "One day, you have to teach me, okay!?" he asked excitedly. He wanted to learn as much as he could about the world and about the people in it. Maslin was certainly an interesting enough character and he definitely wanted to be apart of the future with him. He could be his little helper of sorts.
"Now Dom, you can't have everything your way. I'm sure Maslin's quite busy and I don't know how much a youngster like you could really help." Kavanna interjected.
Damian gave her a sharp glare. "But mom-" he began, but was interrupted.
"No buts, no why don't you go get yourself cleaned up, it's getting rather late and you have to get to bed soon." she said.
Damian crossed his arms and continued to glare the entire way into the living room until he couldn't be seen any longer.
Kavanna sighed and rolled her eyes a bit with a smile on her face. "If you're ever planning on having children, be sure not to spoil them too much as babies. Otherwise they'll just run you ragged, hehe." Kavanna said, cleaning a couple of the dishes.
Wiping her hands, she continued, "So you say you've been working on imbuing magic into armor, right? What is the cost of that? I'm asking because my husband is training to be apart of the Order's Guard and I want to make sure he's protected when he goes to battle with dragons and the Oblivionites."

"I have spoiled lazuli enough to not want the same behavior in children of my own," Maslin replied with a chuckle as he too got up from the table and tried his best to help clear it.
Lazuli gave an annoyed huff at that but didn't otherwise respond, he did have a nicer life than most drakein.
"For you just kind word of mouth would be enough," the young man noted with a smile. They were not the closet of friends but Kavanna and Damian were special in an inexplicable way to Maslin and for them he would make exceptions to his usual pricing structure.
" If you meant in general though, since you can find the odd other smith who does it, they tend to be kind of pricy. " It was a difficult art and everyone had their own way of going about it. "You'd likely be asked for some of the rarer dragon soul types and you'd be best to send your husband to do the ordering or many will raise the price due to not wanting to help the enemy as they see it." even civilians weren't free from the war and the bias it brought.

A giggled emitted from the woman as she listened to the huff made by the Drakein. "Children are a blessing, but a huge responsibility. You have a good head on your shoulders though...so I'm not too worried about you. You'll grow into a fine young man; I'm sure of it." she said, crossing back to the table and sitting down in a chair once more.
Kavanna nodded in agreement. She understood that some would definitely try to price things higher for her. "You're quite kind, Maslin; but I do wish to repay you somehow. I can't have you go through all of that work for nothing! That just wouldn't be fair! I'll collect a few dragon souls of a specific type and send word for you one day in the future than. If that's okay of course." she said with her kindest smile. She was pleased to have made a new friend in Maslin. A kind, quaint little boy he was too.
At that point, Damian re-entered the room fully ready for bed. "Alright mom...I'm ready. But I'm not tired yet!" he said. "The sun isn't even fully set yet either!" he finished.
Kavanna smiled and shook her head a bit. "I know, sweetheart...but we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow. We're going to the city and you have to be up early for the day! Why don't you go read a book or something before bed? Say goodnight to Maslin and Lazuli. We'll see them again one day, I hope." she said, turning to Masling and smiling.
Damian gave a heavy sigh and walked over to Maslin's side. "Goodnight Maslin. I hope you have a safe trip back home. I love you." he said as he patted Lazuli and began to walk out.
Kavanna's eyes widened. "D-Dom?! Why did you say you loved Maslin?" she said, cheeks reddening.
Damian turned around. "You always tell daddy and me that you love us. And I love him, that's why, silly mom! He's my best friend!" he said with a grin as he turned around and left.
Kavanna instantly turned to Maslin and began to apologize, "I'm so sorry for that. He's so young, I don't think he really understands the meaning of love."

Maslin had nodded at Kavanna's initial statement, he would be more than happy take a commission from her anytime. He would also make a better effort to stay in contact in the future though for more than just business reasons.
Damian's insistence that he wasn't tired reminded Maslin of some of his younger cousins who would fall asleep on their parents, all the while insisting that no they weren't yawning and yes they could stay awake all night if they wanted. He hoped the younger boy didn't exhaust himself out of stubbornness. A day in any city was always a tiring and stressful thing for Maslin.
The young man tried very hard not to stare after Damian after his innocent and somewhat confusing proclamation of love and deep friendship. That had been unexpected and Lazuli's quiet hissing laughter did little to make things less awkward. "It's uh, it's okay, just a little weird," Maslin murmured. Although he did appreciate the claim of being a best friend he wasn't sure what he'd done to deserve the title or such devotion.
"It's been an interesting day, thank you for letting Lazuli and I stop by."

What Maslin had said just before he left was very true. An interesting day indeed. "Keep safe! It's getting a bit cold, so bundle up tonight! Take care! We hope to see you again someday soon!" she called out before closing the door behind the two slowly fading characters.
She turned around and sighed. "Oh Damian...what has gotten into you?" she said, rolling her eyes as she walked upstairs to finish her nightly routine before bed. The two had a long day tomorrow, and she wanted to be up bright and early for it!
