Ennea watched Crispin attack the dummy. "Focus! Don't worry about where you hit the dummy, just hit it!" She clucked at him. "Finesse can come later as you get more practiced!!"

"Oh, and don't forget to breathe." She called over her shoulder. "And don't over think it!!" She added on top of that.

Ennea continued going through the practice set along side Crispin. Finally, she swung her axe in one last sweep and then shouldered it. "Getting the hang of it?"

The movements were clumsy on Crispin's end, and he moved over a bit, paranoid about clipping Ennea or her weapon. By the end, he was panting again, his arms sore. And this was just a warm-up?!

"I, um, yeah... I think so?" It had felt good, somehow, and he thought that he saw some glimmer of that connection Ennea had thought about, about something in him reaching out to touch Shaiming and the two of them moving as one, if only briefly. "Man... maybe they should've given me something lighter, though. Like a dagger."

Shaiming snorted possessively at the thought.

Ennea snorted. "You'll probably think otherwise when you're fighting some slavering monster abomination." She rubbed her thumb along the handle of her axe. "Having reach is good, more space between you and the possibility of getting disemboweled."

Ennea looked at Crispin thoughtfully for a moment. She had been reluctant to teach him at first but actually this was kind of nice. It felt nice to be out in the sunlight, going through the old exercise forms that were practically second nature now. It was grounding somehow. Funny, considering she had hated practice when she was a fledgling hunter.

Of course, watching Crispin flail was amusing too. It felt nice to be an instructor rather than an expendable faceless peon for once.

"Hey Crispin." She called. "Ready to try something more advanced?"

Disemboweled? Crispin winced at the thought, but Shaiming threw possessive and protective coils around his Hunter - well, metaphorically, at least. For a moment the dragon's natural FEAR shield pulsed over Crispin's skin. "Y-yeah, that's true," he managed, weakly.

More advanced? Oh dear. But if he stopped now... "Um, yeah. Sure. I'm game if you are," he said, after a moment. It was kind of unfair what bad shape he was in - not that the pod had helped matters. Then again, he hadn't been very fit before the pod either.

"Cool" Ennea said. She turned to face Crispin and raised her axe, getting back into form.

Then without warning, she swung, attacking Crispin at a much faster speed than she had been using in their practice forms. "Then let's go, defend yourself!" She cried.

'Ware! Shaiming snarled, and that was the only warning Crispin had before Ennea's weapon crashed into him. He very nearly fell over, only saving himself from a tumble by bracing with Shaiming's shaft. "H-hey!" he yelped, startled; adrenaline jolted through him, making his extremities tingle.

Fight back! the dragon replied, excited; the anger he had radiated at first was gone, replaced with a sort of eager playfulness. Evidently Shaiming had recognized Ennea's action not as a surprise attack of malice, but as another part of training. For a moment the image of dragons tussling together, coils sliding around each other in a tangle, presented itself to Crispin's mind.

"Okay! You're on," Crispin managed, hefting the glaive and then bringing it around in an arc, trying to counterbalance the momentum with his weight. It... kind of worked?

Ennea danced back from Crispin's swing but not quite fast enough to avoid it completely. "Okay, not bad, not bad." She said, hiding the irritation she felt at herself for underestimating the other hunter. She knew better than that: never let down your guard; never assume. Crispin may be a clumsy newbie but he was learning fast.

Baraz was snickering in the back of her head.

Ennea ignored the ahriman as she usually did. "I think you're getting the hang of it." She said. There may be hope for the newbie yet.

Ennea attacked again with a fast but very obvious swing. It was the equivalent to a simple fast ball right down the middle. She was curious to see Crispin's defense under pressure. If he got hit with this he deserved it.

Crispin blanched and jumped back; he snapped up the glaive just in time, in a glancing strike that deflected the energy from Ennea's own attack, though it left his palms stinging. His retaliation was a swift jab that missed Ennea by several feet.

Ennea twirled back and then swung at Crispin again. Another easy to read attack.

Crispin blocked that one, though sluggishly; he couldn't help but feel that Ennea was holding back for his sake. Every strike to the glaive's shaft seemed to reverberate all the way down to his bones. He could tell he was going to have very sore hands before long. Maybe he should get gloves...

"I can take it," he told Ennea, trying to be bold. "Really!"

Whoops, caught out. Ennea smiled and shrugged somewhat sheepishly. "Okay, sorry." She said.

It wasn't like she was toying with Crispin, she just wanted to get him used to reading attacks and defending. Going easy on the newbie. But maybe her teaching attempt was too simplistic. Crispin was learning remarkably fast, after all.

Ennea attacked again. Her swing was less obviously telegraphed and much faster. "Better?" She asked.

"Ah!" Crispin flinched as Ennea's movements sped up; he tried to bring the glaive up to parry, but the weapon's weight fought him and Ennea's blow landed solidly, making him stagger. It was clear that he couldn't do quick parries, not the way they did in video games. Video games had lied to him.

This is no game, Shaiming said, sharply. Stop thinking in those terms, boy...

Ulp. "Y-yes, sir," Crispin managed, shakily. He held the glaive in front of him, as if cowering behind it.

"No, you're too stiff." Ennea said.

"Loosen up. Hold your glaive like this, see?" Ennea held her axe in an easy ready position and balanced herself on the balls of her feet. "It's easier to react and to move like this in an instant. Don't just hide behind your weapon!"

Without warning she swung her axe, attacking Crispin again.

Crispin flinched and very nearly dropped the glaive.

CRISPIN.

The dragon's voice boomed through his very bones, and he flinched again. "Yes! S-sorry, Shaiming!" He redoubled his grip on the glaive's shaft and took a deep breath, positioning his feet the way Ennea's were, shifting a bit until he felt balanced. Stable.

Better. The dragon's tone was soothing now, though still with that stern edge. You must not fear pain, boy. It is a part of life... Shaiming's thoughts went strange, hazy; there was a sense that the dragon was straining for something, but was unable to find it. ... It matters not. I do not need an example for you to know, do I?

"No, sir."

It is just Shaiming, Crispin. Not 'sir', however firm we may need to be with each other. Now, attack!

"Yes si- Shaiming!" He looked at Ennea, then jabbed at her sharply; under Shaiming's direction, he twisted the glaive's point about and jerked it upwards, making what would have been a long upwards tear had he been attacking flesh and not a FEAR shield. Crispin looked surprised at how well it had worked.

But Shaiming was rumbling in his mind, a pleased, low sound. The runes on the weapon's black blade were bright now. "What... what is that? Ennea?" he asked, uncertainly.

Ennea did her best to jump back from Crispin's jab attack but his movements were surprisingly fast. "Good!" She called.

Crispin's excitement seemed to have died down some and he must be getting more in-tune with his weapon, judging from that attack. They were obviously talking, judging from the 'yes sir, no sir' side of Crispin's conversation that Ennea could hear.

But now the runes on Crispin's glaive were glowing bright and the other hunter was looking uncertain again. Oh shoot, Ennea mentally chided herself, she'd forgotten to mention that. There were so many things to remember when teaching!

"Oh, your weapon is fully charged." She said, "It glows when it's like that."

"When you attack something Fear-based, um, your weapon like, absorbs some of that Fear into itself..." Or something. Ennea was hazy on the precise science of Fear mechanics. She gamely pushed on with her explanation anyway. "Usually it takes about three solid hits to get a full charge."

"And when your weapon has a full charge..." Ennea raised up her weapon so Crispin could see the glowing runes on her axe. In her mind, Baraz tensed like an eager dog awaiting its release command.

Ennea sighted down the field at a practice dummy several yards away and then twirled with her axe. Winds erupted from her axe's wake and twisted into a screeching cyclone that slashed knife-sharp at the dummy.

"...you can, do a more powerful, ah, attack," Ennea panted, breathless, "when you release that charge." Her hair was blown all in disarray but she didn't care. Ennea grinned at Crispin, her expression totally open and unreserved for once.
