"An involuntary reaction to rude men the world over," she explained, not the least apologetic. If he was able to elicit this reaction from her of all people, then she very much doubted that it was the first time someone had been driven to express their opinion of him physically rather than verbally.

"And I could hardly care less how you view yourself," she further elaborated. "It is the way that you talk to and treat other people that is the problem. You claim humanity, yet, doctor or not, your heart seems to be lacking. It is called empathy. Most people are not as cold and callous as you. A little consideration in how you speak can go a long way."

She shook her head. "If this is how you treat everyone, then I am amazed you have survived this long." In fact, it was probably only his trade that had saved him from many a duel...or knifing.

"My empathy comes in a different manner. I feel it more when I deal with those who have some common sense when it comes to traveling and are not stubborn to take a doctor's advice." Another cloth found, he worked at trying to soak up the drink from his coat. "And to have humanity means I act like a human, that I am one. Given certain unsavory characters, I'll consider humanity to be based around subjective opinion."

An absent shrug, Marco felt more annoyed about his coat than anything else. "I treat each person differently. After all, why should I treat the lord who hired me to see to a sniffle while only wanting to see Somnium in truth, be treated the same as a man who's daughter is suffering from a pox? Also consider the fact of what I often have to tell people." A heavy sigh, the second napkin set aside.

"If I care too much, I will blame myself for those I cannot save. Appear to not care I am called cold and callous. Better to offend and see that I have the sanity to treat a person another day, than to weep and wallow in despair for those lost to me. In any case-" reaching into his pocket, a few coins were pulled out, "-that should cover your drink."

The gypsy glared at him, growing more disgusted and irritated by the word. "Keep your coin. I have no use for it." Bloody doctor, trying to add insult to idiocy. She lifted her chin and gave him an arch look. "I hope you were not trying to imply that my habits are lacking in common sense." He certainly had no room to pander to her. Not when he had been out in the same weather as her.

More than a little reluctantly, she found that she could not argue with that last bit, at least not the parts concerning weeping and wallowing. Still. "To have humanity means more than simply being a human. It means having a soul, a heart, and acting accordingly. Kindness, understanding, empathy - and your definition of that sounds more like respect for behavior that suits your ideals than true compassion, now that I think of it."

"Besides," she added. "I never said you ought to pander to gawkers and idiots. Just show a little common courtesy to the rest of the world."

A heavy sigh from Marco he made no move to take the coin. "It's to pay for your drink. I upset you, you threw it, so I am partially to blame for the loss of your beverage. As for your habits-" Somnium stomped his hoof and Marco paused, "-I can't say for sure." The buck knew what Marco could say, and he also was willing to bet that it would just make things worse. Along the lines of 'your habit of not listening-' was likely to end with more than just a drink in his face.

"Souls are fickle things. As are hearts. At least when trying to treat them." A shake of his head. "Overall, we have our opinions on what qualifies as compassion. A point of contention, we'll disagree in a circular fashion." He gave a shrug. There was little purpose to having an argument. "I doubt you'd accept an apology."

The gypsy leveled a flat look at him. "I told you. I have no need for your coin. The cost of my food and drink is covered." It nearly always was. By that point in her life, she had been singing long enough to have at least one regular tavern in every major town, and several others besides. Part of her bargain was free fare. She only paid for her food when she was in unfamiliar territory, and she had been coming to this tavern for a long time.

At any rate, it was certainly true that they were unlikely to make any headway with further arguing. The doctor was too stubborn to see reason, even when she was clearly right. Such difficult odds would not usually daunt her, but Rajani was tired. So very tired. It had been a long journey and she had more important things to give her headaches than the questionable moral compass of one frustrating doctor. As for the apology...

"I would, but as you have yet to offer one, the assumption seems moot."

Marco looked at her one last time before taking the coin back. "As you wish then. I'll save my coin for something else then." No skin of his back if she refused. Just some coin he could keep to himself for supplies.. or being lazy the next morning and buying himself a breakfast.

"I'd offer one, but it wouldn't be wholly sincere. Better to be an honest man than one of half truths." Bowing just slightly to her Marco didn't even ask Somnium to follow, the buck just huffing and giving the gypsy an apologetic look as the deer and doctor departed.

"Wouldn't want to add lies to your list of offenses," she agreed, and watched him wander off. The gypsy met the buck's gaze for a moment before sneering at the doctor's back. The prat was even more annoying than she remembered.

There is no cure for idiocy, Oberon told her. She offered him a wry smile. That was the honest truth.

"Come on," she said instead. "I'm exhausted." And spirits knew the future offered no respite.

Everyone needs a good hateship from time to time. It would be bad for Raj's reputation if she was buddy-buddy with everyone. XD
